Unit 1: Globalisation
For a brief overview of Boeing and links to articles, check out the entry in Hoover's Directory. For
fuller information, check out Boeing's website.
BP Amoco (now BP) and Royal Dutch/Shell are both cited as examples of truly global companies.
Within the Shell site, you'll find a useful page about its approach to globalisation.
Britannica.com, Encyclopaedia Britannica's website, has links to several interesting articles and
websites that focus on globalisation.
Designed for entrepreneurs, the Entreworld site provides practical introductory information on a
variety of business and management topics. A section on Global Entrepreneurship contains a couple
of useful articles on the advantages for small businesses of expanding internationally. Check
outEmerging markets: An entrepreneur's guide to staying sane, and Expanding
internationally: Grow as you go. Both articles provide clear, accessible information and highlight
key vocabulary.
Unit 2: Brands
Hoover's Directory offers a brief overview of Calvin Klein with links to recent articles.
Check out the Coca-Cola site, which has information about Coca-Cola's core brands plus its other
world-wide brands. Also check out the page which has a brief history of its brands.
Fast Company, an online business magazine, is an excellent source of information on the new
economy and workplace. For an interesting article on brand qualities, check out an interview with
Scott Bedbury, Vice President of Marketing at Starbucks Coffee Company, entitled 'What great brands
do - an eight point programme for creating great brands.' At the same site you can also read an article
on Di-Ann Eisnor, who has succeeded in marketing digital brands in the physical world.
The Harvard Business Review archive is also a valuable source of more academic articles on
aspects of brand management.
Unit 3: Travel
The Emirates Airlines and British Airways sites have detailed information about the companies.
Also, take a look at the section of the British Airways site that gives information about its frequent flier
programme, the Executive Club, and its benefits.
The Delta Airlines site contains information about its frequent flier programme, Delta Skymiles. The
site also offers travel tips.
Bradman's Essential Guide to Business Travel is an attractive and well-structured site providing a
wealth of city and country information for Europe, the Middle East and North America. It offers
economic and business briefings, unusual city-facts, and information on etiquette and history. The site
is particularly valuable as a source of comparative data on different cities and countries.
Unit 4: Advertising
The Ogilvy and Mather site offers a history of the advertising agency. It includes a case study of its
American Express campaigns from 1961 to 1999, with examples of advertisements.
The careers section of the J Walter Thompson site contains useful background information about the
activities of an advertising agency. The site also offers case studies of campaigns.
A section of the BizMove.com site, which offers free resources for small businesses, includes a basic
introduction to marketing and sales which includes an excellent overview of different types
ofadvertising media.
The website of the advertising department at the University of Texas contains information on
international advertising, including successful strategies for global advertising, illustrated with
examples from successful campaigns. The site also contains links to online papers about many
aspects of the industry.
Unit 5: Employment
Many companies' sites contain a recruitment area, which often contains good background information
about jobs and the recruitment process.
Check out BP's site for different types of jobs in the oil industry and The Gap's site for an overview of
jobs in different departments of the company.

An area of the SHRM site (The Society of Human Resources Management) contains the archive of its
HR magazine. Topics include downsizing, flexible working options, management practices, and
international HR.
BizMove.com has a section with a good basic introduction to aspects of personnel management.
It includes information about hiring, the rights of employees, training and development, and setting up
a pay system.
Unit 6: Trade
The BizMove.com site is a good starting point for information on international trade. It contains a
clear guide and tips for international trade and export, covering topics such as methods of payment,
documentation and shipping logistics. It also contains a useful glossary of export terms and a
worksheet for developing an export plan.
The Export-Import Home Page is a site based on Joseph Zodl's book Export-Import. Check out 10
Profitable Tips for Exporters and Importers.
Could you be an exporter? Check out the Export Institute's action plan, How to Become a
Successful Export Agent.
TradePort is a US-government sponsored site that aims to offer comprehensive trade information. It
includes TradeExpert, an interactive international-trade tutorial designed to help all levels of
exporters. The site also has a Country Library containing information on trade and other local
conditions.
Unit 7: Innovation
3M, renowned for its culture of innovation, devotes a section of its site to an Innovation Centre.
Check out the story of the invention of Post-It quiz. Some of the questions are rather 3M specific,
but it is fun to try and will give you a sense of how 3M handles new ideas.
Unit 8: Organisation
Fast Company, an online business magazine, is an excellent source of information on the new
economy and workplace. Check out an article entitled This Organization is Dis-Organization which
profiles the unusual Danish company, Oticon Holding, and its radical approach to organisation, with no
departments, no titles, and no paper.
The Herman Miller company makes office and business furniture. A useful area of the site is an
online magazine about homeworking and the problems of balancing work and life.
Steelcase 's site also provides valuable information on the changing workplace. It features a library of
case studies providing practical examples of workplace design solutions for corporate clients, including
Hitachi and Air Canada.
Unit 9: Money
startup.wsj.com is a site about start-ups from the publishers of the Wall Street Journal. The section
of the site about financing options includes an informative article on the role of 'business angels' in
financing business expansion.
BizMove.com has a useful section about financial management, covering topics such as
understanding financial statements, financial ratio analysis and sources of money.
investorwords is an online glossary of 5000 financial definitions, with 15,000 links between related
terms.
Carol World is a free online service offering one-point access to company reports via geographical
areas of the world: Asia, the United States and Europe. Search by business sector or company name.
This site is particularly valuable as a quick way of finding comparative financial data, for example on
companies in the same sector.
Unit 10: Ethics
Check out BP's site for statements about the company's approach to business ethics and its business
policies. The site also contains declarations of policy on health, safety and the environment.
For information about other corporate initiatives on environmental and social issues, take out a look at
these companys web sites:
The Body Shop. Check out its performance on social, environmental and animal protection issues.
The Gap. Check out the pages on initiatives for social responsibility.
Nike. The site provides a wealth of information on initiatives in the area of social responsibility.
Also check out the companys reply to criticism of its employment practices in Indonesia.
The Center for Ethics and Business, at Los Angeles's Loyola Marymount University, offers practical
resources for studying business ethics. One area on the site, the Ethics Toolbox, features an ethical
orientation quiz which identifies a persons preferred style of resolving ethical dilemmas. Also check
out the strategy for solving ethical dilemmas.
Unit 11: Change

Check out a page on the General Electric site which contains links to useful articles assessing the
contribution of CEO Jack Welch to GE's success.
The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) offers an archive of its HR magazine.
Check there for interesting articles on the impact of downsizing.
Fast to the New Economy and the new workplace. It contains some thought-provoking articles
onchange. There is a useful article profiling Barbara Kux, Vice President for Eastern Europe at
Nestle, and her principles for managing change in Eastern Europe. Also check out an article Are you
sure you are up to the 24 hour economy? which focuses on the new pace of business and on
practices of round-the-clock working. There is also an article on the work of psychologist Wil Calmus
who has specified three of the most common forms of resistance to change and offered his
prescription. Finally there is an interesting list of 50 reasons why we can't change. Both articles
would be a good starting point for discussion.
Unit 12: Strategy
An area of Cisco Systems's site provides useful information about the company's acquisitions,
including links to articles about its successful acquisition strategy. Also check out the pages on the
companys strategic alliances, which have links to information about its alliance partners, such as
Hewlett Packard , Microsoft and KPMG.
Pearson plc's site also contains information about the company's acquisitions. Also check out the
information on the CEO, Marjorie Scardino.
Check out the careers section of McKinsey's site for a short interactive case study: click on Get
Ready and Solve a Case in the toolbar. In the second case study, you decide whether or not a US
financial institution should expand its credit-card business into the Brazilian market.
Designed for as a resource for entrepreneurs, Entreworld provides excellent introductions to a
variety of business and management topics. The site contains a selection of useful articles
onstrategic alliances for growing a business. Check out Choosing Strategic Partners That Really
Partner and The Art of Effective Alliances. Both articles provide practical examples from real
companies.
StartupJournal is the Wall Street Journal's site for entrepreneurs.The section Sound Advice includes
many articles on strategies for growing a business.
Unit 13: Cultures
Businessculture.com is a site specialising in business and culture, and includes links to pages on
individual countries and reports on culture, communication, proper gifts and negotiating tactics.
The Harvard Business Review archive contains a number of articles on business etiquette. Two
short articles worth checking are Communicating in Germany and Doing Business in Japan. These
useful articles are available for download for a small fee.
Unit 14: Leadership
For useful background information about the business leaders featured in the unit, check out their
company websites. These will often contain a page with biographical information about the CEO and/or
board of directors.
Pearson plc: check out the information on the CEO, Marjorie Scardino.
General Electric: check out a page on the site with facts about CEO Jack Welch.
The Business Week archive also has a feature listing the top 25 executives of the year with brief
profiles summarising their backgrounds and key achievements. Names include:
Chris Gent, Vodafone Airtouch.
Thierry Desmarest, TotalFina.
John Chambers, Cisco Systems.
Leaders Direct offers basic a introduction to leadership: Leadership in the 21st century which
includes tips and pointers on topics such as managers as leaders and decision-making styles.
Unit 15: Competition
The Faculty of Economics and Business at Monash University, Australia, offers a excellent
introductory guide to Marketing Theory and Practice. Check out the pages on market segmentation
and product positioning.
Lycos Small Business offers some excellent small business web guides, including one on marketing
your product, which provides a good basic introduction to key concepts and strategies.
Entreworld is designed as a resource for entrepreneurs, and provides excellent practical introductory
business information on a variety of business and management topics. The section on niche
marketing offers a list of useful articles. Check out these three, which together provide practical
examples of different aspects of niche marketing: All the World's a Niche, Prospering in a Niche
Market and The Two Faces of Niche Marketing.

The BusinessWeek online archive features a couple of useful articles on the challenge to
multinationals of appealing to new consumer markets. Check out an interesting article, Central
Europe's New Consumers, which looks at consumer trends in Central Europe and competition
between multinationals to capture their business. Also check out an article which charts the failure of
companies like Nike, Pepsi Cola, Levi Strauss to appeal to the new Generation Y youth market.
Unit 16: Quality
Check out a site from Dell Computers that contains information about customer support for its
online customers. Also check an article in the Fast Company magazine archive, How Dell Sells on
the Web, which looks at how Dell has built up its relationship with its online customers by offering
new levels of service.
Fast Company online magazine deals with issues of the new economy and workplace. Its archive
contains a list of articles on customer service. Check out an interesting interview, Four who know
how, in which four leaders from different fields give their answers to a key customer service question.
