A new player in South African trade publishing

We can finally confirm that the new venture set up by Basil van Rooyen and Louise Grantham to
publish trade books in South Africa will be called Bookstorm.

Bookstorm has been set up as a boutique publishing company to provide authors with a focused,
passionate and experienced publishing partner, to provide the book trade with quality non‐fiction
books targeted at the South African consumer and to provide Basil and Louise with the excitement
and enjoyment of entrepreneurial trade publishing in partnership with dynamic authors.

Our focus will be adult non‐fiction titles, but we are sure to make exceptions for other projects that
we can’t resist – we are already considering some titles that fall outside our planned scope.

Bookstorm has established a close relationship with Pan Macmillan who will handle our sales,
marketing and distribution and in many cases will also be our co‐publishing partners. Our first titles
will be published in the second half of 2010.

I have always believed that publishing, the actual putting together of books, works best as a cottage
industry, run tightly by a small team of dedicated and devoted people. Really good books are created
by the close interaction of inspired publishers and authors.

However, the weakness of this approach lies in the sales and distribution side, which will always
favour the big players. In Bookstorm we have the best of both worlds.

Basil van Rooyen, Chairman

Trade publishing is something that gets under your skin – there is nothing to beat the thrill of
developing ideas with authors and seeing them grow into something more than either of you could
have come up with on your own. At Bookstorm we will develop these synergies to bring fresh ideas
and new voices to South African bookshelves.

Louise Grantham, Publisher and CEO

As an existing publishing partner of Basil van Rooyen’s, I am hugely excited about this new venture
which brings together two of the most experienced and respected people in the South African
publishing industry. We have much to learn from them and look forward to bringing their dynamic
new range into the market.
