1. Introduction
The Online Shopping system is developed for customers to shop online with a valid user
id and password, and nobody can enter the official section. The idea our group came up with
for the project is an application to model an online shopping system. The application will
deal with customers choosing items to buy from a different variety such as books, computer
supplies, music etc. Also to minimize the overhead of entering user id and password each
and every time the user moves to the next page, we are using the concept of session and
cookies where a user id and password are stored in temporary file which get deleted
automatically as user logs out. The entire system is built taking utmost care of user
friendliness and security.
In order to facilitate the customers, suppliers, operators, officials for the above stated
functionalities the system is to be flexible and efficient. E-stores help to market the goods, to
find the required goods and buy them. Once a customer purchases an item, it is added to the
shopping cart and continues to online payments. The real-time credit card processing to
online store with a secure, easy-to-integrate solution for accepting and processing credit card
payments online will be added. In our Online Shopping project we are introducing the
installment system, where the concerned person can pay the bills for the shopping in the form
installment. In order to pay the bills the customer should have the account and they should
access the website through that account.

3. Proposed Project Description

3.1 Objectives
To create a project for selling online merchandise, showing a catalog of shopping items,
offering discounts and coupons to attract customers.
To make the process of payment simple and reliable.
To collect shipping address of the customer to ship the goods and provide return
merchandise service.
To provide the facility of paying in installments to the customers.
To provide tracking information of the shipped goods.
3.2 Target Customers
The target customers include all the people who purchase the merchandise online
such as students, businessman, employees etc.
3.3 Approach
The idea our group came up with for the project is an application to model an Online
Shopping System. The application will deal with customers choosing items to buy from a
different variety such as books, computer supplies, music etc. The database will keep track of
the customer details buying items from the shop. Also there will be a record of suppliers for
the different items along with stock details.
If the items are needed to be shipped, we will maintain the shipping details for the items.
Once we start creating E-R diagrams Im sure we will find more sources of information. We
believe that this type of application will give us lots of data to model.
The application that we plan to create will allow a user who in this case could either be a
customer or an employee to perform all of the CRUD (Create, Retrieve, Update, and Delete)
actions on the data contained within the database. There will be a login differentiating
customers and employees and each can perform specific functions. A new customer can
register, select items to buy, pay for them and request them to be shipped. An employee, on

the other hand could check the supplies, add or delete information regarding the products and
retrieve any information regarding customers or products if necessary.
Our application would consist of a basic web based Graphical User Interface that will be
intuitive to use. The data entered in the GUI will used to populate the database using JDBC
to communicate between our application and the database. This will be a user friendly system
to manage the working of an online shop.
