My Qualifications for Working at Kumon

My name is Kay Htut, and I am a junior at Catonsville High School. I have recently
started looking for a job and Kumon was the number one place I had in mind. The reason is
because my brother, who graduated from UMBC in December of 2014, used to work at Kumon
during high school and has advised me to do the same, so I kept his advice in mind. I also have a
friend who is currently working at Kumon who thinks that I would be very compatible with this
job because I am a hard-working intellectual.
Math is my favorite subject in school; I am actually looking to pursue a career in math
and science. Reading is also an interest of mine (my favorite book is A Tale of Two Cities by
Charles Dickens which I read in eighth grade), but when it comes to the two, my forte is in
numbers. I am currently taking AP Calculus AB/BC and AP Language and Composition at CHS
along with 2 other AP classes, and my current grades consist of straight As. I have gained vast
experience with tutoring other students and also with grading papers. Along with other friends, I
volunteered for the Refugee Youth Program in which we help young refugees (who were mainly
from Burma, like me) with their schoolwork and give them a chance to learn about American
culture to help them assimilate into our community. There was a language barrier, but luckily I
speak Burmese so I was able to help without as much difficulty. In addition to that, I tutor my
friends for no price. Recently, I met with a classmate to help prepare her for the math portion of
the SATs. I am patient and efficient in teaching others as a result of tutoring a myriad of students.
Aside from my tutoring, I devote my lunch period every other school day to helping one
of the language teachers in grading papers and making copies for whatever lessons he has
planned. This has been occurring since the beginning of the 2014-15 school year, so I am fairly
proficient in doing such activities. My extracurriculars involve Badminton and Orchestra. I

developed an interest in music around fifth grade, which is when I started learning how to play
the violin. I am still a violinist to this day I am first violin, fourth chair in my schools
Symphonic Orchestra. I have been playing Badminton since middle school, but did not start
competitively playing until 10th grade. Throughout these past two years that I have been a
member of the CHS Badminton Team, I was a varsity player who made it to counties twice. I am
a member of my schools Student Sharing Club, in which we essentially devote our time to help
others. I participated in Pauls Place, organizing food and clothing for the needy, and on
Halloween I walked around neighborhoods collecting food for our Halloween for Hunger food
drive with other colleagues. Along with these clubs and more, I am a member of National Honor
Society, National Math Honor Society, and National Art Honor Society.
Anyhow, I used to be very reserved as a child, but have now learned to express myself
with a higher self-esteem, which is how I became a very social person today. I tend to be friendly
with people I meet, and I always try to find compromises in times of conflict. I am very
meticulous on punctuality; if I am early, I am on time. If I do not like something however, I will
voice my opinion. If required, I can be flexible and work towards a negotiation of some sort. I
wish to work at Kumon not only to help others, but to help myself in the process. I believe I can
learn more about myself throughout this course and find ways to make myself helpful and
improve upon my character as needed. My peers describe me as loyal and persistent, so when I
dedicate myself to something, I keep to it until my work is done. My experiences and knowledge
that I have gained over the past few years have helped create the unique character that I am
today.
