abstractandhighlevelthinkingskillsinordertowin,skillsthatmaynot
betaughtatschool.Forexample,childrenneedtofollowinstructions,
solvecomplexproblemsanduselogicinmanyofthegamesthatare
currentlypopular.Suchexperiencewillbebeneficialtoachilds
progressionintoanadult.
However,concernshavebeenraisedabouttheprolificuseof
computergamesbychildren,muchofthisrelatedtotheviolencethey
contain.Theproblemisthatinmanyofthegameschildrenare
rewardedforbeingmoreviolent,andthisviolenceisrepeatedagain
andagain.Forinstance,manygamesinvolvechildrenhelpingtheir
charactertokill,kick,stabandshoot.Thismayleadtoincreased
aggressivefeelings,thoughts,andbehaviours.
Inordertominimizethesenegativeimpacts,parentsneedtotake
certainsteps.Firstly,somevideogamesareratedaccordingtheir
content,soparentsmustcheckthisandensuretheirchildrenarenot
allowedtohaveaccesstogamesthatareunsuitable.Parentscan
alsosetlimitsonthelengthoftimegamesareplayed.Finally,parents
shouldalsotakeanactiveinterestinthegamestheirchildrenare
playingsotheycanfindouthowtheyfeelaboutwhattheyare
observing.
Tosumup,therearebenefitsofcomputergames,butthereare
disadvantagestoo.However,ifparentstakeadequateprecautions,
theseverityofthesenegativeimpactscanbeavoided.
