1.1

GENERAL

Selective and Wideband Voltmeter 476J-1 is a highly

sensitive, selective test instrument which measures
the voltage level of each frequency component of
complex wave forms in the 4 to 750 kc range. As a
selective voltmeter it is used either in the laboratory
or in the field for several types of measurements:
(1) harmonic distortion, (2) intermoduiation products,
(3) crosstalk, (4) attenuation, and (5) modulation
characteristics tests, relative to electrical filters,
cables, or open-wire lines. The frequencies of a
complex wave form are also indicated. As a wide
band electronic voltmeter the 476J-1 measures the
rms volt.1.ge level of a single or composite signal or
noise in the 200 cps to 750 kc range.

1.2

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

The 476J-l consists of four major circuits: (1) an

r-f amplifier with an input matching network and a
low pass filter, (2) an 800 kc i-f circuit, (3) a 15 kc
i-f circuit, and (4) a metered output circuit. See
figure 1-3.
The 476J-l is a single unit which can be either rack
mounted on standard 19-inch racks or llsed on a
bench. It is fitted with removable safety covers and
two carrying handles. A reinforced wooden carrying
case is available for transporting the unit. See
figure 1- 2.
Standal'd construction techniques are used on internal
wiring with small parts accessible on composition
terminal boards. Critical circuits are enclos ed in
metal containers which have removable covers.
Tubes are held in place by spring loaded holders.
The tuning condensor is ruggedized, vernier-driven,
and directly calibrated with the tuning dial. The dial
is illuminated with two 6.3 volt'pilot lamps.

c. Set the dial to the red mark nearest the test
frequency.
d. Adjust DIAL CAL control C132 until a zero
beat is heard .in the headset.
e. Reset the dial to the test frequency and set
function selector switch S105 t the SEL VM position.

3.4 VTVM MEASUREMENTS

(WIDEBAND)
The 476J-1 measures single or composite signal
rms voltage levels or voltage ratios (in db) over the
200 cps to 750 kc spectrum when switch S105 is set
in the VTVM position. The measurements can be
made on either balanced or unbalanced two-conductor
circuits.

NOTE
Compare the output impedance of the
circuit under test with the value indicated
by
PUT IMPED
CE switch S101. The
two value should be the same. For very
low level measurements, the il1put leads
should be kept as short as possible.
Check all ground connections carefully.

3.4. 1 RMS LEVELS. Follow the steps below when

making vtvm measurements.
a.
3.3.

Calibrate the meter as instructed in paragraph'

b. Set INPUT IMPEDANCE SWitch S101 to the

correct position to match the circuit under test.
c. Set INPUT switch S102 to the XIO scale and
function selector switch S105 to the VTVM position.
d. Connect the circuit being tested to input term
inal EtOI and E102 with the center conductor or un
grounded lead attached to terminal E101.
e. Adju t
PU switch S102 for an on-scale
met l' indication, and record the indicated voltage
(rm ).
3.4.2 VOLTAGE RATIOS. When comparing the
voltage ratios of two or more signals in succession:
a. Set INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101 to the
0-5K position and function selector switch 8105 to
the VTVM position.
This operation fixes the input resistance of the unit
at 5,000 ohms (non-inductive) and provides a means
of calibrating meter M101 to accurately measure
voltage ratios of different input levels.
b. Apply the signal which has the highest level
of the signal being tested to terminals EI01 and
E102.
c. Set INP
SWitch S102 to the 0 db position and
turn ADJ I 'PUT control R109 for a meter M101 indi
cation of 0 db (0.775 v)
d. Remove the reference voltage (step ) and
individually measure the remaining levels on the
test circuit. INP r switch 8102 ea) e adjusted to
maintain on-scale meter eadings as necessary.
To compute the level indicated by the instrument:
a.

Record the meter indication in db.

b. Note the osition of INPUT switch 8102 and

SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE SWItch 8104.

Section III
Operation

c. Add the meter indication and the two switch

indications algebraically to arrive at the total level
in db: i. e. value in db = -4(meter) -20(SI02)
-10(SI04) = -34 db.

c. Connect the output terminals of the network

under test to input terminals EI0l and EI02 on the
476J-l and tune MAIN TUl\TING control C131 to the
fundamental frequency.

3.5 SELECTlVE VOLTMETER

MEASUREMENTS

d. Set INPUT switch S102 to the +20 db position

and SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch S104
to the 0 db position.

The 476J-l measures harmonic distortion, intermod

ulation products, crosstalk, attenuation, and modu
lation characteristics when used in the selective
voltmeter application. The following paragraphs
describe these measurements. Calibrate the meter
as ins tnlcted in paragraph 3. 3 and perform the
measurements in paragraph 3.4. 1, a to e, before
attempting selective voltmeter measurements. The
latter ensures that input levels will not overload the
instrument. The instrument has a very narrow band
pass of approximately 200 kc. When making meas
urements in the SEL VM position, rotate the tuning
dial slowly to ensure measurement of all signals.
Adjust SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch
S104 to the -60 db range to measure very low level
sigllals. Possible errors in measurement can occur
when other spurious frequencies in the vicinity of
1604 to 2350 kc are present. This situation can occur
when image signals differ in level by less than 30 db.
A low-pass filter can be used at the input terminals
to attenuate the spurious frequencies.

e. Increase the signal generator output for a fuH

scale deflection. Record the level.
f. Tune the voltmeter to the second, third,
fourth, ... n harmonics, and record the level of each.

The total harmonic distortion is obtained from the

sirable frequency components. Measurements are
limited on the upper limits by the 476J -1 internal
noise voltage, which is approximately 1 microvolt.
a. Connect the signal generator and selective
voltmeter as shown by figure 3-3.

3.5. 2 INTERMODULATION MEASUREMENTS. Per

form intermodulation measurements in the same way
as outlined above for harmonic distortion measure
ments.
a.

b. Adjust the output of the signal generator for a

level of approximately -t-23 dbm*. It is necessary to
provide a low impedance termination on the generator
in some cases to provide a flat output over the test
frequency range.

Connect the equipment as shown in figure 3-2.

b. Connect the two signal generators shown in

the illustration so the intermodLtlation products will
differ by at least 500 cycles. The voltmeter can
then differentiate between the intermodulation pro
ducts.

c. Vary the signal g'enerator across the test spec

hum, at the same time tuning the 476J-1 to the signal
generator frequency.
d. Record the level of each measurable frequency
component as indicated by meter M101. Intelligible
near-end cross-talk attenuation measurements up to
130 db can be measured.

c. Adjust SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE

switch S104 to the -60 db position for maximum
sensi tivity.
d. Scan the frequency band carefully and record

the level of each observed signal.

The instrument can also be used as a very sensitive

null indicator in a bridge type crosstalk meter. No
additional balancing filters are necessary.

e. Compare the ratio of the intermodulation pro

duct levels to the test tone levels. System specifi
cations determine the degree of permissible inter
modulation distortion.

The 476J-1 can be used in an actual carrier circuit

for analyzing crosstalk on specific channels. Meas
urements can be made with the meter for purposes of
pinpointing the disturbing frequencies. Headphones
can be used for audible interpretations of the cross
talk.

3.5.3 CROSSTALK MEASUREMENT. The 476J-1

is used to measure both near-end and far-end cross
talk on open-wire lines or cables. The various
crosstalk components can be separated as to level

GENERAL

This section consists of a circuit analysis of the

voltmetel' by stages, paralleling the schem.atic dia
gram, figure 5-1.

The 476J-1 consists of four major circuits:

a. An r-f amplifier with an input matching net
work and a low pass filter.
b. An 800 kc i-f circuit, consisting of an 804 to
1550 kc vfo, a ring modulator, an 800 kc band pass
filter, a stage of resistance-coupled amplification,
and another 800 kc band pass filter.
c. A 15 kc i-f circuit consisting of a 785 kc
crystal-controlled oscillator, a ring modulator, a
15 kc band pass filter, a variable attenuator, two
stages of resistance-coupled amplification, and a

4.2

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

4.2.1 INPUT AND AMPLIFICATIO J, The 476J-1

input is either balanced or- unbalanced, dependent on
the position of the INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101.
Center INPUT terminal EI02 is at ground potential
in the UNBALANCED position. Terminal E103 is
at chassis ground potential and can be used for a
test equipment common ground.
The signal is coupled through capacitor CIOI or
transformer TIOI, li\lP T IMPEDANCE switch
S101B and S101C to the INPUT attenuator switch
S102. Through a series of switched resistances,
R1l0 through R1l5, input levels of up to +40 db can

10

be measured with ut overloa ing the voltmeter.

ADJ INPUT potentiometer R1 9 is a non-inductive
variable resistan '8 which further varies the input
level. The s'gnal is coupled directly to tube VIOl,
a dual-triode untuned resistance-coupled amplifier,
and from there to the center tap of function selector
switch Sl05B. The 476J-l functions as a vtvm when
S105 is in position 4, and as a selective voltmeter in
positions 1, 2, 5, and 6. The CAL 1 position is a
no-signal pOSitiOI. Filter FLIO 1 is a low pass filter
which presents a high imp dance to signals above
750 kc and a low impedance to lower frequencies.
The signal is applied from the output of FL101 to the
primary windings of ring modulator transformer
T102.
4.2.2 800 KC I-F CIRCUIT WITH FILTERING. The
ring modulator consists of transform rs T102 and
T103, diode emOl through CR104, and potentio
meters R127 and R126. The via consists of tube
V102, MAIN TUNLlG capacitor CI3l, and a series
of switched LC circuits: inductors LI02 through
107 and trimmer capacitor CI3S, C135, C137,
C139, CHI, and C143, all switched by FREQ
NGE
switch S103. Trimmer capacitor CI32 permits
accurate calibration of the dial [-1' uency with respect
to the input sigllal frequency.
The 800-kc intermediate frequency sigllal is coupled
from the output of ring modulator transformer T103
to the input terminals of 800-kc band pass filter
FL102. It is then applied from the output of filter
FL102 to the grid of tube VI03 and further amplified.
The output from VI03 IS applied t a other 800 kc
bandpass filter and to the Seaalia ring modulator.
The 800 kc fillers pass only a 200 cps bandwidth.
4.2.3 15 KC I-F CIRCUIT WITH FILTER.L.~G. The
800 kc sign ] mixes with a 785 kc signal from the
crystal-controlled oscillator, tube VI04, at the
second ring modulator. The 15 kc ifference fre-
queney is applied to switche series attenuator,
SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch 8104 and
resistolS R136 through R141. The signal is then
applied to resistance-coupled amplifiers VI05 and
VJ 07 A, cathode follower VI07B, and to the input of
the 15 kc band pass iilter FLI05.

Section IV - V
Principles of Operation - Maintenance

4.2.4 OUTPUT CIRCUIT. The 15 kc signal is ap

plied from the output of FLI05 to terminals 2 and 5
of function selector switch S105B and to the grid of
tube VI08. The three resistance-coupled amplifiers,

VI08 and VI09 further amplify the signal which is

then applied to output meter MI0l or phones through
detector diodes CRUO and CRUI and switch S105A.
