1. The role must be one that you could realistically play on a professional stage within the next 5-10 years.
2. This means the role should be type & gender appropriate. Exceptions to this guideline would have to be
adequately justified by the student and accepted by the professor before receiving permission to be used for
the project.
3. You must secure the complete piano score & libretto for your chosen dream role (this may affect your choice of
role based on material availability). Further, you will need to create a rehearsal schedule for yourself and
members of your selected cast that includes your assigned in-class rehearsal time, the guest participants photo
shoot during Week 3, at least 2 out of class rehearsals, the evening dress rehearsals as stated in this document
and your syllabus, and the final performances. This rehearsal schedule must be signed by your cast to indicate
their acknowledgment of their commitment to this project. They must also include their contact information
(e-mail & phone). Your show materials, signed rehearsal schedule and role approval form (as provided in this
packet), are due by Master Class on THURSDAY, SEPT. 10th during the third week of classes. You are certainly
welcome to turn these materials in sooner to expedite the commencement of your individual rehearsal
processes.
4. You will be expected to prepare 2 pieces from your chosen role. This should include a solo and a group piece.
Remember a group piece is as small as a duet. You are highly encouraged to keep your group numbers small.
The more people you recruit, the more schedules you have to coordinate. You will also need to include a
segment of connective dialogue as part of your presentation. This may require some editing since your
selected songs may not occur concurrent to one another in the script. Final script edits must be approved by
the professor. Your presentations need to be staged, choreographed (if applicable), use appropriate props,
very limited rehearsal furniture for set pieces, & costumed in representative apparel. These technical elements
should be sufficient to reflect the tone of the role/show. If you have questions about these requirements,
please ask the professor as soon as possible.
5. You will also select an additional solo piece from a second choice dream role which will be combined into a
medley with your classmates to be performed as the opening number of the concerts. This piece should be
selected no later than your lesson time during the 3rd week of classes.
6. Within one week of the approval of your role & piece selections by the professor, you will need to provide
complete copies of your selected music and dialogue in your chosen performance order with cues written in to
the following people:
Copy 1*- The Accompanist- Pati Sayers (if a percussionist is available for the performances, you will need to
provided Pati with another copy of the music for which you would like percussion accompaniment)
Copies 2 & 3- The Professor- Tara Snyder (one of the copies will be given to the lighting designer)
Copies 4 & Beyond- Your Cast
7. It is your responsibility to arrange time to produce rehearsal recordings of your selected pieces with course
accompanist Pati Sayers, as soon as possible prior to beginning rehearsals on the pieces. This is particularly
true of dance pieces. DO NOT use original cast recordings, karaoke tracks, or any other commercially produced
accompaniment for rehearsal as it will provide you with incorrect performance tempos and will not be
representative of our performance band (which will only consist of piano and, possibly, a drum set).

8. You will be required to perform in at least one classmates presentation and you will participate in both nights of
the Dream Roles Concert performances as either performer, crew or both. Efforts will be made to keep any
one individual from having to perform in an excessive number of other performances. If your group piece
requires the talents of people not currently in your class, you must make sure these additional actors sign and
agree to your rehearsal schedule mentioned in item 3 above, ESPECIALLY the evening dress rehearsals &
performances during Week 16. The only rehearsals students from outside the class will be allowed to miss are
the in-class work-throughs of the shows, which occur toward the end of the term. If these students are
available, however, their participation is encouraged.
9. You will need to have e-mailed your professor digital copies of your H/R (in jpg or png format), resume (in PDF
format) and production photos (in jpg or png formats) for the Concert website no later than the beginning of
the 2nd week (Monday) of school.
10. A thorough written character & scene analysis will be required to accompany your performance work.
Guidelines for this paper include the following:
___ Research into production history of the show
___ Essential background/backstory information for your character
___ Identification of key conflicts, themes, time period and events essential to understanding
the plot, and specifically, how those are borne out in your two selected songs/scene(s)
___ Identification of super objective, objective hierarchy, obstacle(s), strategy, tactics/actions (use active
verbs), subtext, interior monologue based on lyrics from the selected songs, or from dialogue in the scene(s).
___ Identification of vocal technique and choices (grounded in Estill Voice Training Principles) that aid and underscore your
work/performance of your two selected songs/scenes
___ Analysis of character archetype based on research into character/comparison to similar characters/your own opinions and,
subsequently, why it is an appropriate choice for you based upon voice and character types
___ MLA format for works cited
This document will be due Tuesday, October 20th. You will also be presenting a 5-8 minute presentation on
Tuesday, October 20thabout your selected role and show based on your paper & accompanying research. You
may include aural/visual aides, but please let the professor know at least one week ahead of time to make
arrangements for the appropriate equipment to be in the room.
11. At least 10 printed copies of your headshot and resume must be provided to the professor by the 9th week of
class (Week ending October 23rd) for inclusion in casting packets. You will also be expected to help promote
the marketing efforts of the professor/producer throughout the process of the Concerts development.
12. Each dream role will be given a specific master class rehearsal time slot. If you are not in the particular pieces
being rehearsed that day you are highly encouraged to come and observe your classmates process, but are not
required to be there. As stated in your syllabus, dont wait until your assigned time to begin rehearsals
(especially those of you toward the end of the term)!

14. You must contribute to set-up/tear-down process for the concerts. This includes helping with load-in/load-out
of furniture from departmental storage to the Black Box and back at a time that is convenient for the
departmental production manager during Week 16/17.
15. Students will be expected to contribute to the reception to be held on opening night of the Dream Roles
Concert. These contributions may be financial or provisional (i.e.food, drinks, flatware, etc.) and will be due by
Thursday, Dec. 3rd (unless the items are perishable, in which circumstances, arrangements for delivery will be
made individually with the professor).
16. Unless specifically stated to the contrary, all requirements listed in this document for the Dream Roles Concert
are graded.
17. We will work around departmental rehearsal schedules/classes only in terms of your evening commitments.
Work is NOT an excuse (this includes professional performance gigs as per the student handbook!)
