AT&T FOUNDATION AWARDS $15,000 GRANT TO FUND

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR EAST LYME STUDENTS
EAST LYME, Conn. (Oct. XX, 2015) AT&T* Foundation it has awarded a $15,000 grant to
the East Lyme Board of Education to fund scholarships for local high school seniors
participating in the states Coastal Connections program.
Coastal Connections was inspired by the Big Picture Learning Model, which provides
students with individualized guidance from advisors, parents, teachers, mentors and fellow
students. The program assigns each student a primary advisor, who works with the students
parents and the students themselves to create in-depth Personalized Learning Plans which
include year-by-year strategies that help students achieve academic goals and gain realworld experience through professional internship opportunities.
The East Lyme Board of Education will use the $15,000 AT&T Foundation grant to create
scholarships and award financial assistance to Coastal Connections students hoping to
pursue higher education opportunities.
We are proud to support the East Lyme Board of Education and the Coastal Connection
program here in Connecticut, said AT&T Connecticut External Affairs Director Kelly Bettuchi.
Programs like this ensure all of our local students receive opportunities they need to
succeed, both in their academic careers and professional futures. We look forward to seeing
these young students thrive in college and beyond.
The Coastal Connection program creates invaluable opportunities for young students whose
academic careers may have otherwise ended after high school, said state Sen. Paul
Formica (R Bozrah, East Lyme, Montville, New London, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Salem,
Waterford). I am grateful for AT&T for its generous investment in our towns youth and
applaud East Lymes teachers, advisors and education professionals for their efforts in
creating such a successful program.

About Coastal Connections

The Coastal Connections Program offers students the chance to be involved in a nontraditional
high school experience. It provides students with a smaller, more supportive learning atmosphere
which individualizes the learning experience while focusing on interest based learning
opportunities.
Coastal Connections is inspired by the Big Picture Learning (BPL) Model. This model
understands that each child has unique interests, needs, and abilities and that the key to
achievement lies in fostering students individual interests and encouraging their active
participation in the learning process.
There are currently over 130 BPL schools in existence in the United States and around the world
including three in Connecticut (Bloomfield, Lisbon, and Storrs).
