National Philanthropy Day

November 15 is recognized worldwide as National
Philanthropy Day, although you may find it celebrated
anywhere from November 7 to November 22 depending
upon where you live. Its an occasion to focus on how people around the world give of their time, their talents and
their treasures for the betterment of their communities.
Philanthropy is very much an act of goodwill - an active
effort to promote human welfare.
Every community in the Columbia Basin is served by
a Community Foundation whose mandate is to distribute the earned interest from their endowment funds in
the form of annual grants to registered charities in their
respective communities. And those endowment funds
are built by the generosity of ordinary citizens who recognize the value of setting aside some of their treasure for
humanitarian purposes.
National Philanthropy Day is deliberately placed in mid
November when people are inclined to make strategic
donations to good causes in order to receive tax deductible receipts. Nelson and area is served by the Osprey
Community Foundation and three affiliated funds, the
Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake, the Slocan
Valley Legacy Fund and the Salmo Valley Fund with total
assets in excess of $6,000.000. On National Philanthropy
Day, consider a donation to a fund near you.

Recycling Donations To
Kootenay Lake Hospital
The Regional District of Central Kootenay and the
Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre presented representatives from the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation with
a cheque for $3,500. To date, the program has contributed
over $46,000 to the KLH Foundations fundraising efforts.
Donations represent profits from beverage containers collected at the Lakeside Drive Recycling Depot (formerly
the Nelson Transfer Station).
The Central Resource Recovery Committee is pleased
to continue to support the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundations projects said Tom Newell, Director for Electoral
Area F and Chair of the Committee. This ongoing partnership between the Nelson Leafs and the RDCK continues to provide a meaningful benefit to the community.
The RDCK and the Nelson Leafs Recycling Center
have partnered in the beverage container recycling program at the Nelson Transfer Station since 2010. Recycling
bins provide residents with a convenient place to recycle
refundable beverage containers while knowing that the
profits from their donations are benefiting the community
directly.
Not only are we contributing to improving the services
of our local hospital, but we are also making beverage container recycling accessible, thus keeping recyclable materials out of the landfill, stated Uli Wolf, General Manager
of Environmental Services for the RDCK.
All refundable beverage containers are accepted in the
bins at the Lakeside Drive Recycling Depot - sorting is
not required! Residents must place individual containers
into the bins; no bulk loads are accepted. Large volumes
of containers are accepted at the Recycling Centre (Bottle
Depot) located at 120 Silica Street, Nelson.
In BC, approximately one billion beverage containers
are recycled each year. Recycling saves energy, reduces
greenhouse gas emissions and relieves pressure on nonrenewable resources. This is all good for the environment
and great for our community. For more information on

black lab cross that was brought into the
Trail Regional BCSPCA as a stray Oct. 20,
2015. Buddy would make a great family

Shepherd has been hailed as a jazz virtuoso blessed with
a pop sensibility. She has been praised by critics worldwide
for her arrestingly original writing and soulful delivery.
The four time Juno Award nominee and two time Polaris
long list artist is fresh off the heels of headlining tours in
Mexico and Eastern Canada. She will be performing songs
from her acclaimed new album The Signal, which features
contributions from Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock).
Joining Shepherd on her tour of British Columbia is
guitar wizard and longtime collaborator, Michael Occhipinti. Scott Kemp on bass, John Day on trumpet, and local
favourite Tony Ferraro on drums. For the Nelson performance, second year Selkirk College vocal major students
will join Shepherd on stage.
Tickets for the November 16 show will be available at
the door, $15 and $10 students/seniors. The performance
begins at 7:30 pm.

Guild of Balfour initiated a
new annual event called the
Festival of Flowers.
136 quart sealers of flowers were placed in the cemetery, church and at some
homes on Friday evening
and taken down Sunday in a
quiet reflection of respect and
honour for others and deep
appreciation of the flowers we
enjoy in our summer gardens.
Each year the ladies will
be making up quart sealers full of fall flowers to
set around the community
cemetery, churches and on
our doorsteps.
The idea behind it is that
we are showing appreciation
for the beautiful flowers we
have enjoyed in the gardens
this year, remembering with
respect the good people that
have lived and passed on in
Balfour as well as showing
brotherly love for our neighbours in the community. It
is a peaceful way to show
forbearance of each other
and carry on the values of
what others, once here, tried
to do for the community
and their neighbours. It is
respect and appreciation for
one another living and gone.
We hope that each year
others in our community
and elsewhere will join us
for a weekend in the fall to
set out a jar of flowers on
their steps and reflect on
what it means to be a good
neighbour. This silent event
is a quiet peaceful thing
from the heart, and is worth
participating in. We are
hoping this simple festival
will catch on and grow in
the years to come. Maybe
