M/C 3622, 3633 STEAM STERILIZERS
1. General

GENERAL
General
The 3600 series Sterilizers feature microcomputer controls that monitor and sequence all cycle phases. Both
audio and visual notification is provided for improper
equipment operation or component malfunction.
The 3600 sterilizer may be equipped with an automatic
power operated door or a manually operated door. A
Chart recorder or optional Message Center/Data Logger
is provided on all 3600 sterilizers.
All 3600 sterilizers can employ pressure pulsing to
condition goods prior to processing at the exposure
temperature.
The Model M/C 3622 is a gravity steam sterilizer with an
operating range from 100C to 135C (212F to 275F).
The M/C 3622 sterilizer employs steam pressure, pulsing on the wrapped goods cycle, to condition goods prior
to processing at the exposure temperature.

An M/C 3622 and M/C 3633 may either be a Single Door


or a Double Door unit.
Single Door units can be located in a wall opening
(recessed) or installed in the free-standing position
within a cabinet. Double Door units are located in wall
openings.
Single Door units are loaded and unloaded at the Control End (front) of the sterilizer. Double Door units are
generally loaded at the Control End, and unloaded at
the Remote End (back) of the sterilizer.
Units will be equipped with a track assembly designed
to accommodate Castle and possibly some other loading cars and transfer carriages, or optional Castle racks
and extendible shelves.

DOOR SAFETY OVERVIEW


Typical applications of the M/C 3622 sterilizer are
wrapped and unwrapped hardware, gowns or towels
and liquids in self-venting or unsealed containers.
The Model M/C 3633, is a vacuum steam sterilizer, has
a special low temperature capability with an operating
range of 76C to 99C (168F to 210F). The low temperature capability extends the operating range of the
3633 sterilizer from 76C to 135C (168F to 275F).
For the Unwrapped Instrument Cycle, the M/C 3633
sterilizer employs a gravity cycle. For a Wrapped Goods
Cycle, a pressure/negative (vacuum) pulsing is provided to conditions goods prior to processing. Vacuum
pulsing provides faster, more complete steam penetration for wrapped goods. During drying phase of the cycle
a vacuum is drawn to flush excess moisture.

During a Multitherm (low temperature)


Cycle on the M/C 3633 a vacuum is
drawn to as low as 5 psia. Some media
may need to be sealed inside bottles
suitable for this pressure.

Manual DoorThe manual door has either a water- or


air-assisted locking mechanism. In either case, a diaphragm valve and a solenoid valve (12SOL) are in the
line to the door cylinder. The valves stop the flow of
water or air if the pressure in the chamber is greater than
3 psig or if a sterilizing cycle is in progress (6SSR is ON).
Solenoid valve (12SOL) is controlled by solid state relay
(6SSR). Control relay (1CR) receives a door switch
signal and allows solenoid valve (1SOLsteam to chamber) to activate when the door is closed and the cycle is
started.
Power Door A pressure switch is adjusted to deactivate the door motors when chamber pressure exceeds
3 psig. Control relay (1CR) receives a door switch
signal and allows solenoid valve

chamber) to activate when the door is closed and the
cycle is started.

in progress. A cycle phase indicator will remain on until
a cycle advances to its next phase or is completed.

Unit is ready for automatic processing.

Load is being conditioned.

Load is being processed.

Load is being conditioned for removal.

Cycle is complete.

On manual door units, this indicator remains ON until a


cycle start is pressed and both doors are sealed.

(B) LIQUID LOAD INDICATOR


Lights just prior to the completion of a
Liquid Load Cycle. This indicator serves
as a reminder to the operator that a liquid
load has been processed and special
care must be exercised for load removal.

The indicator will remain ON until; (1) The next liquid

INDICATOR
Displays red WARNING light and digital
reference code to identify a serious malfunction. Displays yellow CAUTION light
and digital reference code to identify a
less serious problem area. When
WARNING indicator is activated, it is
accompanied by an audible tone.

automatic purge is initiated to relieve
pressure or vacuum in chamber.

Displays chamber temperature, in degrees centigrade, when the


Selector-Indicator Panel is energized.
(G) EXPOSURE TIME SELECTOR
Sets the desired time that the EXPOS U R E T E M P E R A T U R E w ill b e
maintained in the chamber. For vertical
pairs of selector switches, grouped together, provide the means to select an
EXPOSURE period in hours and/or minu t e s . P r e s s in g a n u p p e r s w itc h
increases the value of the singular digit
displayed directly above it. Pressing the
lower switch decreases the value.
The last exposure time selected and used for a particular cycle (Wrapped Goods, Unwrapped Instruments, or
Liquids) will remain in memory and be re-displayed for
use, or change, when that particular cycle is selected
again.

NOTE

When using Controls OFF switch to


abort a cycle in response to a coded
Warning or Caution, be sure to record
the code for future reference. Warning or
Caution codes will be erased when the
control panel is turned OFF.
(M) OPEN DOOR SWITCH
Press to open related power door. An
OPEN door switch will not function on a
double door unit unless the opposite
door is closed and sealed. (Power door
only).

(H) EXHAUST TIME SELECTOR

(N) CLOSE DOOR SWITCH

Sets time for the desired DRYING period


to be maintained in the chamber. Description of switches and method of
operation are the same as described for
EXPOSURE TIME SELECTOR.

Press to close related power door. On a


double door unit, whichever power door
is open will close. Pressing CLOSE door
switch DOES NOT seal the power doors.
(Power door only).

(J) EXPOSURE TEMPERATURE


SELECTOR
Sets the desired temperature to be maintained in the Exposure period. The
selector consists of three vertical pairs of
switches, grouped together, to provide
the means to select the EXPOSURE
TEMPERATURE in degrees centigrade.
Method of switch operation is the same
as described for Exposure Time Selector.

(P) SEAL DOOR SWITCH


Single door units do not require use of
this switch for normal operation or for a
vacuum leak test cycle because the
power doors seal automatically when the
CYCLE START switch is pressed. SEAL
DOOR switch is used to seal the power
doors without starting a cycle or to seal
a door not automatically sealed.

Permits the energizing of predetermined


components that will accomplish an UNWRAPPED INSTRUMENTS cycle. The
UNWRAPPED INSTRUMENTS is a
gravity cycle during which a vacuum is
not used. When more than one cycle of
the same type is run in a series, the
selector need only be pressed for the first
cycle. Jacket is preheated to selected
temperature. Ready cycle phase indicator comes on when jacket temperature is
reached.

If control panel has been OFF, SEAL DOOR switch(s)


must be pressed before a cycle can be started. (Power
door only).
(Q) CYCLE START SWITCH

(T) LIQUIDS SELECTOR


Closes and seals the door, and starts an
automatic cycle on single door units.
Starts an automatic cycle if both power
doors are closed and sealed on double
door units. Will start a vacuum leak test
if a cycle phase selector switch IS NOT
PRESSED.

Permits the energizing of predetermined


components that will accomplish a LIQUIDS cycle. When more than one of the
same cycle are run in a series, the selector need only be pressed for the first
cycle. Jacket is preheated to selected
temperature on cycle above 99C.
Ready cycle phase indicator comes on
when jacket temperature is reached.

(R) WRAPPED GOODS SELECTOR


Permits the energizing of predetermined
components that will accomplish a
W R A P P E D G O O D S c y c le . Th e
WRAPPED GOODS cycle pulls a vacuum during the drying phase to flash off
excess moisture. On the 3633 vacuum
sterilizer, vacuum pulsing is employed
during the precondition phase. When
more than one cycle of the same type is
run in a series, the selector need only be
pressed for the first cycle. Jacket is preheated to selected temperature. Ready
cycle phase indicator comes on when
jacket temperature is reached.

If a low temperature cycle is selected


following a high temperature cycle, the
sterilizer must be allowed to cool down
to a temperature below the low temperature selection before starting cycle.

CENTER COMPARTMENT
DIAGNOSTIC CODES BOOKLET
A Diagnostic Codes Booklet is located inside the magnetically latched frame of the center compartment door.
This booklet lists the two digit Warning and Caution
Codes which could appear on the Warning & Caution
Indicator located on the Selector-Indicator Panel. The
booklet interprets the codes, and provides each code
with a list of operator and service responses to the
related problem.
STORAGE
The compartment itself may be used for ready access
storage of recorder charts, print rolls, ink cartridges, etc.
KEYLOCK SWITCH

NOTE

On double door models, the Selector-Indicator Panels operate independently


from each other and have a Keylock
Switch at each end. A cycle that has
been locked-in at one end can be
changed by pressing the controls at the
other (unlocked) end. Both Selector
Panels must be locked to secure the
setting.

It is suggested that one end of a double door sterilizer


(the end with recording device) be designated the Control end, where the cycle is normally selected. The other
end could have the controls locked in a no cycle mode
to prevent accidental changes to cycles set at the Control End.

RECORDER

A Keylock Switch is located in the lower right corner of


the center compartment (upper right on vertical

A Chart Recorder is provided as standard equipment for


the purpose of furnishing cycle records. Electrical power
to the recorder is not controlled through the ON and OFF
switches on the Selector-Indicator Panel. Power to the
recorder is controlled by the recorders Door Actuated
Switch.
The following is a description of the recorders primary
components. Refer to the illustration for component
location.

Span/Null Adjusts the recorders electrical measuring circuit to a related pen arm position, to ensure
accurate recording.

INDICATOR PANELREMOTE END

Cycle Counter Registers the total number of completed cycles that have been run on the sterilizer.

The Remote (Unload) End of a double door sterilizer is


equipped with a Control Head Assembly consisting
solely of an Indicator Panel. This Indicator Panel is the
same as the Selector-Indicator Panel. All Exposure
Times and Cycle Temperatures can be selected.

Door Actuated Switch Depresses by closing the


recorder door to energize (turn on) the recorder. Releases by opening the recorder door to de-energize (turn
off) the recorder. The Door Actuated Switch may be
pulled out manually to energize the recorder while the
recorder door is left open. Pen arms will automatically
move to holding ramps when the recorder is de-energized.

(Double Door Sterilizer only)

CHAMBER PRESSURE GAUGE


A chamber pressure gauge is located on the Control
End face panel (and also on the Remote End face panel
for double door units). The gauge indicates chamber
pressure in PSIG and BAR. It also indicates chamber
vacuum in inches of Mercury (In. Hg.).
RANGE
30 to 0 In.Hg. Vacuum; 0 to 60 PSIG;1 to 4 BAR

POWER DOOR(S)
On units with power door(s), the door(s) open, close and
lock as an integral part of the processing cycle.
In the event of a power failure, a door may be opened
manually. (See Manual Opening Of Power Door).

MANUAL DOOR(S)
The manual door has either a air-assisted or
hydro-assisted locking mechanism. Control of this
mechanism and the actual door swing movement must
be done by the operator.

STANDARD DOOR INTERLOCK SYSTEM


(POWER DOOR)
If the sterilizer has a door at each end, the doors are on
an interlock system. This system prevents both doors
from being opened at the same time to reduce the
chance of contamination of clean items through the
chamber opening from the unclean area. Lights on the
Selector-Indicator Panel indicate when the door at the
opposite end is open or when both ends are closed. The
OPEN DOOR switch on a double door unit will not
function unless the opposite door is closed and sealed.

WARNING

VIOLENT LIQUID REACTIONFailure


to observe the following door opening
procedure could cause liquid boiling over
and/or flasks exploding.

Due to the large mass associated with a liquid load,


additional cooling time is required to prevent possible
thermal shock or boiling over of liquids when the door is
opened or when the load is removed. When the cycle
is COMPLETE, check that the chamber pressure gauge
is at ZERO.
POWER SINGLE DOOR At the end of the cycle, the
door will automatically unseal to allow residual steam to
escape at the top of the door.
POWER DOUBLE DOOR Press the OPEN DOOR
switch, then press the CLOSE DOOR switch. This will
unseal the door gasket and permit residual steam to
escape at the top of the door.
MANUAL DOOR Pull the door control knob to unseal
the door gasket and permit residual steam to escape at
the top of the door. Allow a minimum of 15 minutes
additional cooling time, then pull the door open and
carefully remove the load.
OPTIONAL UNI-DIRECTIONALSYSTEM
(POWER DOOR)
After a cycle has been completed, either door can be
opened; but if the Control End door is opened, and not
the Remote End door, then another complete processing cycle must be run before the Remote End door can
be opened. This system ensures that a load is not
admitted to the Remote End environment after having
been inadvertently re-exposed to the Control End environment.

ELECTRICAL POWER FAILURE


In the event of an electrical power failure, the Selector/
Indicator Panel selections and sterilizer integrity will be
maintained for a short period (60 seconds minimum) by
a battery back-up system: (1) Panel indicators will remain on; (2) digital displays will turn off; and (3) if the
power failure occurs during a cycle, the sterilizer will
cease actively processing a load.
If electrical power is restored during the period the
battery is functioning, sterilizer operation will automatically resume. An Exposure Phase Time, if previously
displayed, may automatically re-set and begin again
from its initial starting point. This does not indicate a
sterilizer malfunction and aborting the cycle is not required.
If electrical power is not restored until after the battery
has depleted its charge, the Selector-Indicator Panel will
have to be turned back on, selections re-set, and the
cycle restarted from the beginning.
If an electrical power failure occurs during a processing
cycle, the operator should proceed as follows:
1. Check the Selector-Indicator Panel and note if (1)
the Indicators are still lit or if (2) no lights appear at
all.

If indicators are lit, the battery system, is functioning properly.

If no lights appear, the battery system is not


functioning properly (provided 60 seconds have
not elapsed). Notify qualified service personnel.

2. When electrical power is restored, check the Selector-Indicator Panel again.

If the indicators are still lit, the sterilizer has


automatically resumed operation.

If the indicators are off, and the sterilizer has not


automatically resumed operation: (1) press the
Controls ON Switch; (2) re-set the cycle selections; and, (3) restart the cycle from the beginning.

CHECK THE BATTERY BACK-UP SYSTEM

The following test involves cutting off


electrical power to the control circuit.
DO NOT RUN this test if the unit is
processing a load.

CAUTION

The charge in the back-up battery lasts


for only five minutes. To avoid fully discharging the battery, perform thIs test as
quickly as possible .

NOTE

1) Be sure the battery has been charging for at least


24 hours.
2) Turn ON the sterilizer controls. When the ready light
lights, select a cycle and note the settings.
3) Turn OFF the white circuit breakers on the power
box and note which indicators on the display are
ON.
4) The digits should be off, and any indicator that was
ON in step 2 should still be ON.

IMMEDIATE TEST FAILURE: When the


circuit breakers are turned OFF all LED
indicators lights also turn OFF.

NOTE

Wait for the READY light to come on.

4. Press CYCLE START


on the Selector-Indicator Panel.

5. Wait for CYCLE COMPLETE


to come ON.

6. Press OPEN DOOR


on the Selector-Indicator Panel.
(Power double door).
MANUAL (PHASE) ADVANCE
The following procedure can be used to terminate an
Exposure Phase of a Vent/Dry Phase without having to
turn the Selector-Indicator Panel OFF. When this procedure is used, the current phase will be terminated and
the cycle will advance to the next phase.
To operate the Panel switches, use both hands.

5) Leave the unit in this condition for approximately


five minutes. The indicators should remain lit.
6) Turn ON both white circuit breakers and verify that
the digits come ON with the same settings as noted
in step 2.
7. If the unit passes the test, the battery system IS
functioning. The check is complete.
8. If the unit fails the test, the battery system is NOT
functioning correctly. Refer to Chapter 4, Troubleshooting to proceed further.
VACUUM LEAK TEST CYCLE
Refer to Chapter 2 for the Leak Test Cycle Phase
Description and Chapter 4 for the Trouble Analysis. The
jacket must be hot for this test.
1. Press CONTROLS OFF
on the Selector-Indicator Panel.

2. Press CONTROLS ON
on the Selector-Indicator Panel.

If the cycle was currently in the Exposure Phase, it will


immediately advance to the Vent/Dry Phase.

open the door, use the same outward motion as was
used to release the hooks.

This moves the piston shaft toward the front of
the unit.
b. Rotate the hinged shaft a similar amount.

Repeat steps a. and b. until the locking hooks


are clear of the door.

5. Pull on the hook cover handle to open the hook


cover. Then pull on the door handle to open the
door.

INITIAL CONDITION: Door is open.

NOTES

Solid state relay 6SSR is not energized, solenoid valve


12SOL (normally open) is open enabling the door cylinders.

1. When the cycle start is pressed, relay 6SSR will


energize which will close solenoid 12SOL and not
allow the door cylinder to operate. Relay 6SSR
de-energizes at the completion of a cycle or after a
cycle has been aborted. Also in series with solenoid
12SOL is a diaphragm valve which is closed, disabling the door cylinders, if there is pressure in the
chamber.

To lock the door: Manually swing the door to the closed


position, push the black door control knob in to seal the
door (cylinder shafts will retract). Relay 8SSR (Closed)
will energize when control relay 1CR is energized, when
switch 1SW (Door Plate) is activated. Relay 1SSR
(Steam to Chamber) will also be enabled (refer to note
#1, following).
Relay 7SSR (Sealed), in the main control box, will
energize when switch 2SW (Hook) is activated along
with 2SW (Right Hinge Lock) and 2SW (Left Hinge
Lock). LED indicator DS1 will also be on.

2. If the sterilizer is a double door model, the remote


end plate switch 1SW must be activated along with
the control end plate switch 1SW in order to energize control relay 1CR.
3. Remote end operation is the same as the control
end with the exception of the M/C SSR numbering
(i.e., 9SSR, 10SSR, 11SSR and 13SSR).

INITIAL CONDITION: Door is closed and locked (7SSR


and 8SSR are on). 6SSR is not energized (12SOL to
door cylinder is open).
To open the door: Pull the black door control knob
outward to unseal the door (cylinder shafts extends).
Switch 1SW will de-activate which will de-energize control relay 1CR, which in turns off 8SSR and disables
relay 1SSR. Switch 2SW (Hook) will deactivate along
with 2SW (Right Hinge Lock) and 2SW (Left HInge
Lock) which will turn off 7SSR. LED indicator DS1 will
be OFF.

SEQUENCE OF OPERATION
POWER DOOR (S) (Control End)
INITIAL CONDITION: Door is open.
Solid state relay 6SSR is off and relay 12SSR is on.
Hinge and non-hinge shaft open LED indicators DS11
& DS8 are on.

To lock the door: Press the DOOR SEAL switch. Solid


state relay 6SSR will energize signaling the door control
logic to seal the door. Relay 0SSR in the door control
box 15A will energize which will enable the hinge side
motor 1B to rotate to the closed position (door swings
closed). At this time the hinge side close LED indicator
DS10 will be ON and motor 1B will turn off.
Relay 2SSR in the door control box 15A is then energized which enables the non-hinge side motor 2B to
rotate to the close position, turning on the non-hinge
side close LED DS7 (door hook swings over the door).
The door control logic will then energize relay 8SSR
door closed. Both 0SSR & 2SSR relays will be energized to seal the door. The hinge side will stop rotating
(0SSR off) when the hinge side lock LED DS12 is on.
The non-hinge side will stop rotating (2SSR off) when
the non-hinge side lock LED DS9 is on.
At this time door plate switch 1SW will be activated as
indicated by LED DS4 being on. Control relay 1CR will
also be energized along with 4SSR (energized with
hinge lock LED DS12 ON) and 5SSR (energized with
non-hinge lock LED DS9 ON) enabling steam to chamber relay 1SSR to control solenoid 1SOL. The door
logic will then energize door sealed relay 7SSR (in main
control box) through the now activated hook switch
2SW.
INITIAL CONDITION: Door is closed and locked.

The door sealed relay 7SSR (located in the main control


box) will de-energize. As the door unseals and the door
plate switch 1SW along with 4SSR (as hinge lock LED
12 goes off) and 5SSR (as non-hinge lock LED 9 goes
off) is de-activated, control relay 1CR will be de-energized disabling the steam to chamber relay 1SSR. Relay
3SSR in control box 15A will then energize, enabling the
non-hinge motor 2B to rotate to the close position, then
on to the open position (hook swings away from the
door). The closed relay 8SSR will turn off.
When the non-hinge side is open and DS8 is on, relay
3SSR will de-energize. Relay 1SSR is then energized
until the hinge side is open and DS11 is on (door swings
open).
NOTES
1. If the sterilizer is a double door unit, both doors must
be sealed, (1SW activated which energizes 1CR for
both the control and remote end and 4SSR, 5SSR
energize both ends) in order to enable steam to
chamber relay 1SSR to control solenoid valve
1SOL.
2. If the sterilizer is a double door unit, the interlock
input signal from the opposing door must be active
in order to operate the given door.
The interlock signal is activated when the door plate
switch 1SW for the opposite door is made. This
operation is controlled through relay 7SSR, located
in the door control box, which is energized to enable
power to the door motor.
3. Door closed relays 8SSR (control end) and 9SSR
(remote end) will be energized for any door shaft
position between closed and locked. These relays
will be off between closed and open.
The shaft position indicators for open, close, and
lock, DS7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 (hinge and non-hinge
sides) will only be on when the respective shaft is
at its discrete open, closed, or locked position. They
may, however, be on only momentarily since the
shafts may move off the sensors.

Solid state relays 6, 7, 8 & 12SSRs are on. The hinge


and non-hinge shaft locked indicator LEDs DS12 & DS9
are on along with 4SSR and 5SSR respectively. Door
plate switch 1SW, LED DS4 is also ON.

To open the door: Press the DOOR OPEN switch.


Relay 6SSR will de-energize, signaling the door control
logic to open the door. Relay 1SSR (located in the door
control box 15A) will energize, enabling the hinge side
motor 1B to rotate to the open position.

INTRODUCTION

SOLID STATE RELAY (SSR) LIGHTS

This section contains a description of how the sterilizer


functions and an electromechanical cycle phase description of type of cycle. A list and location of the
components, a piping schematic and wiring diagrams
are to be used with the cycle phase descriptions.

Each action during a phase will be indicated by a


numbered SSR light located in the panel control box.

USING THE PIPING SCHEMATIC/


CYCLE PHASE DESCRIPTIONS

An exception is 12SOL which is actuated by 6SSR on


the manual door unit. This valve is normally open and
is used to stop water flow to the manual door cylinders
during a cycle.

The piping schematics and the cycle phase drawings


should be used in conjunction with the cycle phase
descriptions for each model.

When an SSR light is ON, the corresponding solenoid


valve should be energized. All two-way solenoids used
in this equipment are normally closed.

NOTE

On manual door units, a 12-second delay will occur from the time the door has
sealed until the cycle starts. This is to
ensure complete door cylinder retraction.

TROUBLE
ANALYSIS
The Trouble Analysis Charts that follow outline the
possible causes and remedies for malfunctions and
problems that may occur during sterilizer operation.

WARNING

The Warnings and Cautions Trouble Analysis Charts


list the codes that could appear on the related control
panel digital indicator and direct the remedial response
appropriate to each code listed.
The Uncoded Trouble Analysis Chart treats problem
areas not covered by Warnings and Cautions.
For Complete checkout and remedial information, refer
to the Operational Sequence, Adjustments and Calibrations, and Repair sections of this manual.

CAUTION

SHOCK HAZARDSolid-state switching circuitry leaks current through the


switched leads even if the device is OFF.
Disconnecting a wire from the circuit
risks electric shock. SHUT OFF POWER
BEFORE SERVICING ANY COMPONENT WIRED TO SOLID-STATE
CIRCUITRY.
SOLID STATE RELAY DAMAGEIf the
lead wire contacts ground, this can damage the solid-state relay.

Reasons for Malfunction
There are many reasons a solenoid valve can malfunction. Although commonly thought to be complex,
solenoid valves are actually simple operating devices.
Many of the problems that cause valve malfunction
originate outside of the valve. Other problems stem from
misapplication or improper installation.
Troubleshooting should begin with checking the voltage
and pressure input to the valve. The problem could be
an inoperative control relay or a fluctuating pressure
regulator. If the valve is receiving the proper voltage and
pressure the valve itself should be checked. The main
reasons a direct acting solenoid valve fails to operate
when electrical power is applied are:

Low voltage or absence of voltage.


Burned out solenoid valve coil.
System pressure higher than the rating of the valve.
Foreign matter in the valve.
Binding core or damaged core tube.

Correct Operation
If a solenoid valve is operating correctly, the core will
move within the core tube and contact the plug nut when
the coil is energized. A sharp, metallic click will be heard.
Absence of a click usually means that the coil is not
receiving any voltage, or that the input voltage is too low.
Voltage applied to the coil must be at least 85% of the
nameplate voltage rating.
A click may also be absent if the line pressure is higher
than the valve pressure rating. If it is confirmed that the
valve coil is receiving the proper voltage the system
pressure should be checked.
Foreign Matter in Valve
Foreign matter in the valve prevents the solenoid core
from moving freely in the core tube. The valve can not
operate and no click will be heard.

disc is swollen or cut, or if the core tube is damaged.
Causes of Valve Failure
A pilot-operated valve might fail to operate when energized even though a click is heard. Absence of flow
through the valve may be caused by:

Insufficient pressure drop across the valve.


Ruptured diaphragm or damaged piston ring.
Plugged or restricted pilot orifice.

Both pilot-operated and direct-acting valves can fail to


operate when de-energized because of:

Faulty control circuit.


Scale or foreign matter in the valve.
Damaged seat or disc.
Binding core or damaged core tube.
Broken spring.

In addition to these problems, common to both pilot-operated and direct-acting valves, the following problems
can cause a pilot-operated to malfunction when de-energized.

Plugged bleed orifice.


Damaged pilot seat or pilot disc.
Damaged diaphragm or piston.
Insufficient pressure drop across the valve.

Excessive solenoid noise (hum and chatter), sometimes


encountered in valve operation, can be caused by:

Low voltage
Faulty relay or improper electrical control signal.
Loose solenoid parts.
Foreign matter on core or plug nut face.
Worn core or plug nut face.
Damaged spring.
High system pressure.

The core movement can also be restricted if the top of


the core is peened over from continual operation over a

BATTERY BACKUP
TEST
1. Be sure the battery has been charging for at least
24 hours.

7. Turn ON the orange circuit breaker and do a voltage


check on the control board across pin 1 to pin 4 of
J1. This voltage should be above 7.3-7.5 volts. If
not, replace the battery pack.

2. Turn ON the sterilizer controls. When the ready light


lights, select a cycle and note the settings.

8. If the voltage is above 7.5 volts for five minutes


replace the Power Supply Board.

3. Turn OFF the white circuit breakers on the power


box and note which indicators are ON.

9. Turn OFF the orange circuit breaker and return all


wiring to its original configuration.

4. The digits should be off, and any indicator that was


ON in step 2 should still be ON.

Battery Charging Circuit Test

NOTE

IMMEDIATE TEST FAILURE: When the


circuit breakers are turned OFF all LED
indicators lights also turn OFF.

NOTE

Battery Charging Circuit failures occur


rarely. None have been reported.

5. Leave the unit in this condition for approximately


five minutes. The indicators should remain lit.

1. Turn ON all circuit breakers on the power supply


box.

6. Turn ON both white circuit breakers and verify that


the digits come ON with the same settings as noted
in step 2.

2. Open the 2A main control box.

7. If the unit passes the test, the battery system IS


functioning. The test is complete.
8. If the unit fails the test, proceed to Troubleshooting a Battery Test Failure..
Troubleshooting a Battery Test Failure
1. Turn OFF all circuit breakers on the power supply
box. Open 1A power box.
2. Find the 2P Burndy plug coming from the negative
side of the battery. Using a Burndy pin extraction
tool (part number 532046), remove the wire with pin
labeled 1A2P1.

3. Make a voltage check on the control board between


1J1 negative and 1J4 positive. Results: Voltage
should be between 9.1 volts DC and 9.7 volts DC.
4. Turn OFF the orange circuit breaker on the power
supply box and recheck voltage on control board
1J1 negative and 1J4 positive.
5. This voltage should be between 9.1 and 9.7 volts.
If it is, the charging circuit on the control board is
good.
6. If the voltage is not between 9.1 and 9.7 volts, the
charging circuit is bad. Replace the control board.

3. Remove the wire with pin labeled 1A5P1 from 5P


burndy plug. This wire is from the power supply
board to the 2A control box.
4. Replace the Burndy plugs into their original positions.
5. Connect the two wires together (insert pins together) and wrap with electrical tape to prevent
them from shorting.
6. This check will bypass the power supply PC board
eliminating a possible cut-off circuit problem. (Refer
to Figure 41).

Operation of Battery Back-Up System

The battery back-up system consists of an 8VDC battery pack, a 5A circuit breaker, a cutoff circuit, and a
charging circuit. During normal operation, the battery is
maintained at 8 volts via the charging circuit located on
the control board. During a 120 VAC power failure, the
battery instantly provides power to the control system to
maintain its normal state. The cutoff circuit monitors the
battery voltage during discharge and shuts OFF the
battery when the voltage gets too low (7.3-7.5).

The duration between the 120 VAC power failure and


battery cutoff is specified to be a minimum of 1 minute.
Although we do not claimlonger times, the duration can
last up to 60 minutes depending on current draw, battery
cutoff setting, and battery condition. An example of this
extreme would be on a 3522 single door with a 7.3 cutoff
setting and a new battery. The cutoff circuit is located
on the power PCB (p/n 511411). For further details of
the battery back-up system, see the Electronic Reference Manual (350064).

Principles of Operation
The closure design seals by means of eight large hooks
mounted on eccentric bearings. When the door is
opened, rotation of the eccentric bearings releases the
hooks 1/2" to relieve pressure on the door gasket and
allow the four hooks on the non-hinge side to clear the
locking bars.
The locking bars are on the edge of the door plate (see
Figure 51) are from a 30 degree ramp that matches the
angle of the adjusting screws in the hook tip which carry
the pressure load. When the door is closed the hooks
pull the door against the gasket and also pull the door
plate to the side lessening deflection of the door (see
detail A in Figure 11). With a larger angle on the locking
bars than the side pull from the door hooks, the hooks
inherently stay engaged, even if the eccentrics rotate
open.
The shafts and eccentrics are mounted inside self-lubricating filament wound PTFE bearings. Large brass
washers are mounted on either side of the hooks to act
as spacers and to protect the bearings from dust. The
washers are held in place with E-clips to prevent the
eccentrics from dropping out and to keep the shafts from
riding up and down. The bottom hooks carry the load of
the door/hook assembly so they have stainless steal
washers with needle bearings under them (see Figure
52).

The door is mounted on hinged blocks suspended between the hooks. A slot in the hinge blocks allows the
door plate to move in and out. A set screw in each hinge
block limit the outward travel of the door. A door stop
(see Figures 55 and 524) on the non-hinge shaft
centers the door by stopping its horizontal travel from
the eccentric motion when the door is closed. This door
stop along with the hinge side stop block have vertical
pins to indicate the fully locked position of the shafts.
Both shafts have pins through them which touch the pins
in the door stop and the stop block when the shafts are
fully locked (top dead center through the line of force).
A hinge bracket (Figures 58 and 526) at the top of the
door keeps the door 90 degrees from the hooks but yet
allow this angle to change during sealing and unsealing
(due to the eccentric action).
On power door sterilizers only, detent assemblies (Figure 57) are mounted on both shafts to force the hooks
to rotate with the shafts at certain angles to facilitate
door opening. A spring is attached to the non-hinge
hooks to enhance the motion of the hooks. Springs are
not included on the hooks on the hinge side for safety
reasons.

NEW STYLE DOOR SHAFTS


New style door shafts no longer use retaining rings
placed into grooves above and below the door hooks
(see Figure 5-3). Two-piece collars are now used above
the bottom hook and the second hook from the top. The
same type collar is used below the third hook from the
top. The grooves, formerly used to accommodate the
retaining rings, are no longer cut into the door shafts.

DOOR INTERFERENCE
If an obstruction stops the door when it is opening or
closing, press the selector switch for the opposite direction from which the door was moving. This will
re-engage the door mechanism.
DOOR MOTOR OVERLOAD CONTROL
In addition to a timer control that opens the circuit when
the motor stalls, there is also an automatic thermal
cut-out located in the motor housing.
If the motor overheats, the electrical supply is interrupted until the motor cools and the thermal cut-out
resets itself.
DOOR ADJUSTMENT (MECHANICAL)
Before starting any door adjustment, the following
checks and inspections should be made.
1. Remove the cover panels from the door and locking
hooks.
2. Thoroughly clean dust and dirt from the entire
mechanism.
3. Inspect the door mechanism.

Check for loose or worn parts. Note: center


hooks are not solidly attached to the angles,
they are allowed to float.
Check for loose or worn shaft couplings. The
shaft couplings must be tight with no slippage
between coupled shafts. The shaft mechanism
must rotate as one unit with maximum of 5
degrees play. Excess play will require key replacement.

4. Check door locking bars for cracks in bars and


welds. Replace or repair defective parts.
Note: All repair welding to be done by certified
welder only. (Replacement pad part number
518104).

5. Check door plate for flatness. When measuring


door plate in field use either a steel straight edge or
piece of string. Measurements must be made approximately one inch away from radius of corners.

Within a 24" length, 1/16" bow is acceptable.

From 24" to full length, 1/8" bow is acceptable.

6. Check for hook binding. With the non-hinge spring


disconnected and the detent hook pre-load removed the hook assemblies should move freely
with the shafts in both the locked and closed position. Binding can be relieved by removing the shouldered screw on the center hooks. If binding still
persists, remove the angle from outside hooks.
7. Inspect the door gasket, replace if necessary. See
Replacing the Door Gasket (see page 616).

Always clean a new gasket before and after


installation.

Clean gasket and end ring with alcohol.

Door Alignment
Adjust door plate so it is centered on the gasket ring
(side to side and top to bottom) and the tip of the
non-hinge hooks touch the door angle evenly. Refer to
detail A in Figure 51.
Raise or lower the door by adding or removing washers
on the hinge shaft between the lowest hook and the
hinge block.
Horizontally center the door plate using the door stop
on the non-hinge shaft see Door Stop Adjustment
(Non-Hinge Shaft) on page 524.
Door sag is affected by the alignment of the hooks. The
hooks must be secured to the hook angle squarely. If
door sags after hooks are checked and aligned properly,
shim washers may be inserted between the bottom
hinge block and the door angle.

door shaft when the door is operated manually. To
adjust the stop block, start with the door closed but
NOT locked.
Loosen the lock nuts and adjust both adjusting screws
so there is 1/32 inch (0.8mm) clearance between the
screw and the sterilizer body when the stop block is
parallel to the body. Tighten lock nut.
The free movement of the block after adjustment prevents excessive friction on the shaft.

there is 1/32 inch (0.8mm) clearance between the
screw and the sterilizer body with the door stop tip
touching the centered door plate (see top view Figure 55). Tighten lock nut.
The free movement of the block after adjustment
prevents excessive friction on the shaft.
3. Adjust the set screw in the detent roller arm so the
arm is parallel to the door stop. The roller should
deflect as the door plate strikes the roller and holds
the door closed at the end of a cycle.
Roller deflection pressure can be adjusted by adding or removing washers behind the spring.
Door Gasket Seal Adjustment
1. Remove the covers from the locking hooks and the
door. DO NOT detach the hook cover from the
rubber boot. Prop the hooks cover to the side.

Take care not to damage gasket when


pulling the gasket from lower left corner
of gasket groove. The gasket is inserted
on the gasket pressure tube at this point.

2. Start at top, pull gasket from the gasket groove.


3. Clean the gasket and mating surface of the head
ring with a damp cloth. Use alcohol for hard to
remove substances.
4. Remove the jam screws (see detail A in Figure 51)
from on top of the door adjustment screws in the
locking hooks. Loosen the adjusting screws slightly.

NOTE

Application of a non-permanent liquid


thread lock is recommended for the adjusting screws for final adjustment.

5. Loosen the set screws in the hinge block which


limits hinge shaft travel (see Figure 56).
6. Lock the door. The door will be loose due to no
gasket.
7. With the door touching the gasket ring, turn all door
adjusting screws (in hooks) in until they touch the
door pads. Start with non-hinge to pull door against
door stop. Double check the adjustment of each
screw.

8. Replace the door gasket, be sure the pressure tube


is inserted into the hole in the gasket. See Replacing the Door Gasket (refer to page 616 in this
manual).

Do not get fingers between the hook and


the edge of the door when inserting shim.
Serious injury could result when the door
is sealed.

9. Insert a 1/8 inch thick shim between the end of the


uppermost hook where it contacts the edge of the
door as the door is sealed. The shim simulates the
thickness of the stainless steel door and hook covers.
If the door lock switches do not trip (door seal
indicator stays on) the adjustment is too tight, readjust door seal. DO NOT ALTER SWITCH ADJUSTMENT.
10. Check for 1/16 inch (even) gap between the door
plate and the gasket ring. If gap is incorrect, repeat
Steps 2 thru 9.
11. With the door locked, tighten the hinge block set
screws (Figure 56) until they touch the hinge shaft,
then back them off 1/2 turn. This allows door plate
to float during vacuum phase.
Check Door Switch Adjustment. These screws
take out some of the play in the door, especially with
manual swing (see page 512).
12. Open the door and reassemble hook and door
covers.\

Back each screw out 1/2 turn and install the jam
screws.

Door Detent Adjustment
(Early Models Only)
To adjust the tension on the torsion spring:
1. Hold the hex collar with a wrench to control the
spring tension.

Hinge Bracket Adjustment


The hinge bracket is used to align the door with the
hinge side hook angle. This adjustment changes the
angle between the door and hook, allowing the door
edge to close at different horizontal locations.

2. Loosen the small hex head bolt until there is no


pre-load on the spring.

1. The spring on the hinge bracket adjustment bolt


should be compressed 1/4 inch. Use the spring
compressing nut to make this adjustment.

3. Give the hex collar 1/8th of a turn counterclockwise


on a right hand door or clockwise on a left hand
door. Tighten hex bolt.

2. Loosen the set screw in the upper and lower hinge


blocks, approximately two turns.

4. When properly adjusted the non-hinge hook travel


can be reversed while it is in motion without disengaging the hooks detent, but will break away if an
obstruction is contacted.

NOTE

Excessive pre-load on the torsion spring


may cause abnormal wear to the dog
and could cause the detent to not disengage when coming in contact with an
obstruction.

3. With the door closed and locked, tighten the set


screws in both hinge blocks until they touch the
hinge shaft, then back them out 1/2 turn. Open the
door.
4. Close the door; the edge of the door should touch
the roller allowing it to hold the door closed. The
edge of the door should just miss the door stop. As
the door seals it will move toward the door stop due
to eccentric action.

way the bolt is to be adjusted.

DOOR SWITCH ADJUSTMENT


(Center Mounted Switches)
Magnetically activated switches signal the control system to prevent a cycle operation if the door is not closed
and locked. The switches must be checked with the door
in the closed and locked position. The door is locked
when the roll pins in the door shafts and stop blocks are
touching.
Switch adjustment consists of aligning the switches and
magnets with the holes in the covers and moving the
switches close enough to the magnets to be activated.
N

NOTE

This adjustment should be done after the


door has been checked for proper alignment. A misaligned door may lock up in
a different position each time.

The magnets must be lined up exactly concentric with


the face of the switch to within 1/16" when the door is in
the locked position. A gap of 1/16" ( 1/32") between
the magnets and the swtiches must also be maintained
when the door is in the tlocked position. See Figure
511.

3. A 1/16" ( 1/32") gap between the face of the switch


and the magnet is to be maintained. The magnet
must be close enough to activate the switch but
must not strike the switch when the door is closed.
Adjustments can be made by placing shims behind
the switch assembly mounting bracket. If necessary, the sensors can be adjusted laterally bye
repositioning plastic mounting nuts that hold sensors in place. (See Figures 511 and 512.)
4. Adjust the switch bracket so that the face of the
manget is concentric with the switch face to within
1/16". (See Figure 511.) This may require opening
and closing the door several times in order to make
the required adjustments.
5. With door in locked position, verify alignment (concentricity) of switches and magnets and 1/16" gap
between switches and magnets. Readjust if necessary.

The door switches are located just below the chamber


opening at the non-hinge side. These switches introduce an extra level of safety to prevent steam from
entering the chamber or a cycle from starting while the
door is open. The hall effect switches sense the south
pole of a magnet up to 3/16" when the magnet and
switch are concentric. The adjustment of these switches
should be checked every three months to ensure proper
operation. The sterilizer should be cool when performing this test.

1. With the door in the fully open position, as indicated


by the Door Unsealed indicator on the selector
panel, the NH OPEN (DS8) and H OPEN (DS11)
LEDs in the door control box (on side of sterilizer)
will turn ON.

All LEDs except DS4 may remain ON or


stay on only briefly. DS numbers are
stamped on PC Board.

2. Press the Door Close selector switch on the control panel while holding the door from closing. Allow
both the non-hinge shafts and the hinge shaft to
rotate to the fully closed position.
The display will indicate Door Unsealed and the
NH CLOSE (DS7) and the H CLOSE (DS10) LEDs,
in the door control box, will be ON as well as 8SSR
in the main control box.
3. Press the Door Seal switch on the control panel
while continuing to hold the door from closing. Allow
both the hinge shaft and the non-hinge shaft to
rotate to the fully locked position.

NOTE

A separate hand held magnet must be


held against the door plate switch (see
illustration) as the shafts achieve the
locked position.

The display will indicate the locked position (Unsealed


Door indicator NOT ON). In the door control box, NH
LOCK (DS9), H LOCK (DS12) and DOOR SW (DS4)

NOTE

During the vacuum portion of a cycle the


door will move closer to the magnet. A
1/16" gap is therefore required at atmospheric pressure.

If an adjustment is required, the magnet or magnet


bracket can be moved slightly.

CHECK
1. With the door in the open position, detach the
stainless steel cover from the non-hinge side hooks
(do not detach cover from rubber) and swing the
cover aside. Place a support under the door cover
to prevent tearing of the rubber boot.
2. To compensate for the thickness of the stainless
steel cover that was removed, a 1/16" thick shim
must be inserted where the uppermost hook bears
against the side of the door panel. If the shim is not
used the magnets may not line up with the switches
properly.
If the door panel has also been removed, a 1/8" thick
shim is required.
3. The magnets must be lined up exactly concentric
with the face of the switch when the door is in the
locked position to function properly. This concentricity is even more important than the gap between
the switch and magnet.

DOOR SHAFT SWITCH ADJUSTMENT


Three magnets embedded in a collar attached to both
hinge and non-hinge door shafts actuate switches in a
box mounted to the sterilizer frame. These switches
signal the control system that the door is in the open,
closed or locked position.
It is important that the magnets are concentric with the
switch faces. If one magnet is aligned, the others will
automatically line up with the appropriate switch.
N

NOTE

In order to make this adjustment, it will


be necessary to turn off power to the unit.
Attach a wrench to the hex on the top of
the shaft and rotate shaft until the roll
pins on the stop block and shaft are
touching.

Minor vertical and rotational adjustments can be made


by loosening collar retaining screws and repositioning
collar. See Figure 515.
Collar has an internal set screw which is mated to a
preset hole drilled into the door shaft. Minor adjustments
ONLY can be made by respositioning collar. Do not try
to force collar beyond the limits allowable by internal set
screw.
Oversized holes in swhich mounting bracket allow for
vertical and horizontal adjustment. Lateral adjustment
can be made using shims or washers between mounting
bracket and switch or shaft assemblies. See Figure
517.

With the shafts in the locked position (pins in shaft and


stop block touching) the top magnet should be directly
in front of the top switch.
The magnets must be lined up concentric with the face
of the switch to within 5 degrees radius when the door
is in the locked position. A gap of 1/16" ( 1/32") between the magnets and the switches must also be
maintained when the door is in the locked position. See
Figures 515 & 516.

DOOR SAFETY SWITCH ADJUSTMENT


On power door sterilizers only, the safety pressure
switch prevents the sterilizer door from being opened if
there is a pressure of 3 psig or greater in the chamber.
This safety pressure switch is located inside the power
box.

GAS-IN DOOR DISABLE CIRCUIT CHECK


(Model M/C 3571 Only)
The door motors are disabled when solid state relay
17SSR (GAS IN) is turned ON. To enable the doors, a
chamber vacuum of less than 4 psia must be achieved
in the chamber, and 14SSR (AIR IN) must be energized.

Connect a Heise absolute pressure gauge to the fitting


provided on the front panel and turn the sterilizer ON
and in the standby condition.
1. Turn OFF dual load station (EO is not used during
the procedure).

TO CHECK:

2. With the controls in AUTO mode, press the SEAL


DOOR switch on the control panel.

1. Open the power box (at the upper rear of sterilizer).

3. Raise the control head and open the control box


cover to expose the Control PC Board.

2. Connect a 120 VAC test lamp or meter between the


normally open (NO) (center terminal) and the
ground screw in the power box.
3. With the Control PC Board in the MANual mode,
and all dip swtiches off except switches for SSRs 6,
11, 12 and 13.

4. Turn ON dip switches corresponding to SSRs 6, 11,


12 & 13. Turn OFF all other dip switches. The dip
switches (S1) are located in the upper center of the
Control PC Board.

Pressurize the chamber by turning ON dip switch


#2 corresponding to 1SSR, until the pressure gauge
reads 3 psig, then turn the swtich off.

NOTE

It may be necessary to have an assistant


read the pressure gauge while you are
making the adjustment to be sure the
switching point is exactly 3 psi.

4. Turn the adjustment wheel, on the pressure switch


to the point that the test lamp first lights.
5. When the adjustment is complete, re-run the TO
CHECK procedure to ensure proper adjustment.

1. Raise the control head and connect a Hiese absolute pressure gauge to the fitting provided on the
front panel.
2. Open the control box cover and set the MAN/AUTO
switch to MANual mode.
3. Lock the sterilizer door(s) by turning ON dip
switches corresponding to SSRs 6,11,12 & 13.
4. Disconnect power to air-in solenoid by unplugging
jack J28 on back of control box.

CYLINDER ADJUSTMENT
The large cylinders located on the top of the sterilizer
rotate the door shafts from locked to closed position.
1. Extend the cylinder shaft fully.
2. Adjust either the clevis on the end of the cylinder
shaft or the angled mounting bracket at the rear of
the cylinder until the lever arm almost touches the
inside of the upper panel.
This adjustment ensures that the shafts rotate fully
allowing the non-hinge hooks to clear the door.
Adjust the small side cylinder linkage so that the nonhinge hooks just clear the door with the cylinder fully
retracted.

DOOR ADJUSTMENT (MECHANICAL)

Before starting any door adjustment, the following


checks and inspections should be made.

7. Inspect the door gasket, replace if necessary. See


Replacing the Door Gasket (page 616).

1. Remove the cover panels from the door and locking


hooks.

Always clean a new gasket before and after


installation.

2. Thoroughly clean dust and dirt from the entire


mechanism.

Clean gasket and end ring with alcohol.

3. Inspect the door mechanism.

Check for loose or worn parts. Note: center


hooks are not solidly attached to the angles,
they are allowed to float.

Check for loose or worn shaft couplings. The


shaft couplings must be tight with no slippage
between coupled shafts. The shaft mechanism
must rotate as one unit with maximum of 5
degrees slop. Excess play will require key replacement.

4. Check door locking bars for cracks in bars and


welds. Replace or repair defective parts.
Note all repair welding to be done by certified welder
only. (Replacement pad part number 518104).
5. Check door plate for flatness. When measuring
door plate in field use either a steel straight edge or
piece of string. Measurements must be made approximately one inch away from radius of corners.

Door Alignment
Adjust the door plate so it is centered on the gasket ring
(side to side and top and bottom) and the tip of the
non-hinge hooks touch the door angle (see detail A Figure 11) evenly.
Raise or lower the door by adding or removing washers
on the hinge shaft between the lowest hook and the
hinge block.
Horizontally center the door plate using the door stop
on the non-hinge shaft see Door Stop Adjustment
(Non-Hinge Shaft).
Door sag is affected by the alignment of the hooks. The
hooks must be secured to the hook angle (see Figure
1-1) squarely. If door sags after hooks are checked and
aligned properly, shim washers may be inserted between the bottom hinge block and the door angle.
N

Within a 24" length, 1/16" bow is acceptable.

From 24" to full length, 1/8" bow is acceptable.

NOTE

It is more important to have the nonhinge hook tips evenly touching the door
angle than to have the door exactly level.

6. Check for hook binding. With the side cylinder water


line disconnected the hook assemblies should
move freely with the shafts in both the locked and
closed position. Binding can be relieved by removing the shouldered screw on the center hooks. If
binding still persists, remove the angle from outside
hooks.

Stop Block Adjustment (Hinge Shaft)
The stop block on the hinge shaft limits the travel of the
door shaft when the door is operated manually. To
adjust the stop block, start with the door closed but NOT
locked.
Loosen the lock nuts and adjust both adjusting screws
so there is 1/32 inch (0.8mm) clearance between the
screw and the sterilizer body when the stop block is
parallel to the body. Tighten lock nut.
The free movement of the block after adjustment prevents excessive friction on the shaft.

NOTE

To compensate for heat expansion conditions during operating conditions, the


adjustment should be made with a hot
chamber and door.

there is 1/32 inch (0.8mm) clearance between the
screw and the sterilizer body with the door stop tip
touching the centered door plate (see top view Figure 524). Tighten lock nut.
The free movement of the block after adjustment
prevents excessive friction on the shaft.
3. Adjust the set screw in the detent roller arm so the
arm is parallel to the door stop. The roller should
deflect as the door plate strikes the roller and holds
the door closed at the end of a cycle.
Roller deflection pressure can be adjusted by adding or removing washers behind the spring.
Door Gasket Seal Adjustment
1. Remove the covers from the locking hooks and the
door. DO NOT detach the hook cover from the
rubber boot. Prop the hooks cover to the side.

CAUTION

Take care not to damage gasket when


pulling the gasket from lower left corner
of gasket groove. The gasket is inserted
on the gasket pressure tube at this point.

2. Start at the top and pull the gasket from the gasket
groove.

8. Replace the door gasket, be sure the pressure tube


is inserted into the hole in the gasket. See Replacing the Door Gasket (see page 616).

Do not get fingers between the hook and


the edge of the door when inserting shim.
Serious injury could result when the door

9. Insert a 1/8 inch thick shim between the end of the


uppermost hook where it contacts the edge of the
door as the door is sealed. The shim simulates the
thickness of the stainless steel door and hook covers.

3. Clean the gasket and mating surface of the head


ring with a damp cloth. Use alcohol for hard to
remove substances.

If the door lock switches do not trip (door seal


indicator stays on) and the water cylinder does not
retract, the adjustment is too tight, readjust door
seal. DO NOT ALTER SWITCH ADJUSTMENT.

4. Remove the jam screws (see detail A in Figure 51)


from on top of the door adjustment screws in the
locking hooks. Loosen the adjusting screws slightly.

10. Check for 1/16 inch (even) gap between the door
plate and the gasket ring. If gap is incorrect, repeat
Steps 2 thru 9.

Application of a non-permanent liquid


thread lock is recommended for the adjusting screws for final adjustment.

11. With the door locked, tighten the hinge block set
screws (Figure 525) until they touch the hinge
shaft, then back them off 1/2 turn. This allows door
plate to float during vacuum phase.

5. Loosen the set screws in the hinge block which limit


hinge shaft travel (see Figure 525).

Check Door Switch Adjustment. These screws


take out some of the play in the door, especially with
manual swing (see page 530).

NOTE

6. Lock the door. The door will be loose due to no


gasket.

12. Open the door and reassemble hook and door


covers.

7. With the door touching the gasket ring, turn all door
adjusting screws (in hooks) in until they touch the
door pads. Double check the adjustment of each
screw.
Back each screw out 1/2 turn and install the jam
screws.

Hinge Bracket Adjustment


The hinge bracket is used to align the door with the
hinge side hook angle. This adjustment changes the
angle between the door and hook, allowing the door
edge to close at different horizontal locations.
1. The spring on the hinge bracket adjustment bolt
should be compressed 1/4 inch. Use the spring
compressing nut to make this adjustment.
2. Loosen the set screw in the upper and lower hinge
blocks, approximately two turns.
3. With the door closed and locked, tighten the set
screws in both hinge blocks until they touch the
hinge shaft, then back them out 1/2 turn. Open the
door.

4. The edge of the door should touch the roller on
closing allowing the roller to hold door closed.
To adjust, loosen the jam nuts on either side of the hook
angle, depending upon which way the bolt is to be
adjusted.
Screw the bracket adjustment bolt into the hook angle
to move the door away from the detent roller or out of
the hook angle to move the door closer to the roller.
Tighten the jam nuts when adjustment is complete.

DIAPHRAGM SAFETY VALVE


OPERATIONAL CHECK
The diaphragm safety valve shuts off the air supply (or
water supply) to the door cylinder, preventing the door
from opening, if pressure in the chamber is 3 psi or
greater. The diaphragm safety valve is in the air supply
(or water supply) line leading to the door locking cylinder
above the chamber.

CHECK
1. Turn the sterilizer ON, in the standby condition.
2. Be sure the Control PC Board is in AUTO mode.
3. Close the door and push the control knob in to lock
the door.
Lift the access flap on the front of the sterilizer,
below the control box. Check that the cylinder is fully
retracted.
4. At the diaphragm safety valve, disconnect the
chamber pressure tubing coming from the chamber
to the diaphragm fitting.
5. Connect an air pump to the diaphragm fitting.
Supply 4 psi to the diaphragm.
6. Be sure that there is no pressure in the chamber.
7. Pull the knob to unlock the door.
RESULTS
If the door does not unlock, the diaphragm safety valve
is OK.
If the door unlocks, replace the diaphragm safety valve.

SAFETY VALVE

At each regular service inspection, check the diaphragm


valve for steam leaks when the sterilizer is in operation.
If any leak is detected, replace the valve (the diaphragm
is not replaceable). A diaphragm could develop a leak
and still function.

switches sense the south pole of a magnet up to 3/16"
when the magnet and switch are concentric.
The sterilizer should be cool when performing this test.
1. With the door in the open position, placing the south
pole of a magnet against the 2SW switch will turn
ON both 7SSR (in control box) and the LED on the
door switch box. Removing the magnet will turn both
OFF.
2. Placing a south pole magnet against S switch will
turn ON 8SSR. Removing the magnet will turn
8SSR off.
If either the designated SSR or the LED do not respond
as specified in steps one and two above, the switch
designated in that step is defective.

It may be necessary to remove door


covers, hook covers and/or trim panels
to gain access to the following switches.

Magnetically activated switches signal the control system to prevent a cycle operation if the door is not closed
and locked. The switches must be checked with the door
in the closed and locked position. Door is locked when
the roll pins in door shafts and stop blocks are touching.
Switch adjustment consists of aligning the switches and
magnets with the holes in the covers and moving the
switches close enough to the magnets to be activated.

NOTE

This adjustment should be done after the


door has been checked for proper alignment. A mis-aligned door may lock up in
a different position each time.

3. A 1/16" ( 1/32") gap between the face of the switch
and the magnet is to be maintained. The magnet
must be close enough to activvate the switch but
must not strike the switch when the door is closed.
Adjustments can be made by placing shims behind
the switch assembly mounting bracket. If necessary, the sensors can be adjusted laterally by repositioning plastic mounting nuts that hold sensors in
place (see Figure 531 & 532).
4. Adjust the switch bracket so that the face of the
magnet is concnetric with the switch face to within
1/16" (see Figure 531). This may require opening
and closing the door several times in order to make
the required adjustments.
5. With the door in the locked position, verify the
alignment (concentricity) of the switches and magnets and the 1/16" gap between switches and magnets. Readjust if necessary.

and the magnet should be maintained. The magnet
must be close enough to activate the switch but

(do not detach cover from rubber) and swing the
cover aside. Place a support under the door cover
to prevent tearing of the rubber.

During the vacuum portion of a cycle the


door will move closer to the magnet. A
1/16" gap is therefore required at atmospheric pressure.

If an adjustment is required, the magnet or magnet


bracket can be moved slightly.

2. To compensate for the thickness of the stainless


steel cover that was removed, a 1/16" thick shim
must be inserted where the uppermost hook bears
against the side of the door panel. If the shim is not
used the magnets may not line up with the switches
properly.

CYLINDER ADJUSTMENT

CYLINDER LUBRICATION

1. Adjust the clevis nut and or cylinder mounting


bracket so that with the cylinder fully retracted, the
door shafts are in the locked position. Locked position is indicated by the pin in the shaft nearly touching the pin in the door stop or stop block.

All manual door cylinders have a front shaft seal which


should be lubricated with cylinder lube
(P/N 517460).

2. Check that with the cylinder fully extended, the


non-hinge hooks clear the edge of the open door by
1/4". If not readjust the clevis and or mounting
bracket.

the center of the pointer, by holding the pointer and
turning the adjustment screw slightly in the opposite
direction the pointer is to be moved. Repeat until the
pointer is at zero.
3. Reassemble the dial glass in the rim and screw the
rim onto the gauge.

Sterilizer, certain precautions must be
observed because of additional safety

When calibrating temperature and pressure signals,


all sensor inputs must be within range. Before turning
on power, ensure that all sensors are connected or
that a calibration box is attached.
Before calibration of any channel, ensure that the
voltages on J10-1, J10-13 and J10-14 are within the
range of ZERO to FIVE volts. If not,

On the control board, check for +18V (nominal


15-16 VDC) at J1.

If the voltage is not present, troubleshoot the


system.

If the voltage is present, perform the calibration


procedure.

If this is not done, incorrect calibration may occur


because of the A/D converter receiving invalid data
when power was applied.

MANUAL RELAY CONTROL SWITCH


The Manual Relay Control Switch has three positions.
The middle position also selects manual relay control.

MODEL SELECTION SHORTING PLUGS


Model selection shorting plug positions are identified

The chamber temperature is calibrated by adjustment
of CHAMBER ZERO and CHAMBER SPAN
potentiometers. Standard temperature is referenced
by known resistance test plugs inserted into the J9
connector (upper right) of the control board. Voltmeter
leads are connected to the J10 connector on the
control board.
Special Tools Required

A 4-1/2 Decimal Digital Voltmeter. Refer to

control board to agree with the pressure meter
reading. NOTE: the voltmeter reading represents
1/10th of the chamber pressure (i.e., 0.05 volts is
equivalent to 0.5 psia.)

3. Pressurize the chamber to 50 psia by turning ON


SSRs 0 & 1. When chamber pressure reaches 50
psia, turn OFF SSRs 0 & 1 to maintain the pressure.
NOTE: Pressure may be more easily maintained by
throttling back the steam supply to the sterilizer.
4. Adjust the SPAN pressure potentiometer (R17) on
the control board to agree with the pressure meter.
5. With SSRs 0 & 1(pressure) OFF, turn ON SSRs 5
& 3 (vacuum).
6. Repeat steps 1-4.
7. With SSRs 0 & 1(pressure) OFF, turn ON SSRs 5
& 3 (vacuum). Allow the chamber to return to atmospheric pressure.
8. Turn OFF SSR 5 and return the control board to
AUTO mode. NOTE: The SPAN setting should
always be the last adjustment made (NOT THE
ZERO).

RECORDER CALIBRATION
This calibration should be done only
by qualified service personnel.
NOTE

PEN CALIBRATION
1. Manually extend the door actuated switch to the out
position.

Recorder calibration should be done


at initial installation, once a year, or
when there is a major recorder problem.

Always ensure that the control board


is in calibration BEFORE attempting
recorder calibration.

2. Set switch S6 to STEAM for Steam Sterilizers.

Set switch S6 to STEAM.


The pen is calibrated for NULL and SPAN. The pen
records temperature. There is no hysteresis or
linearity adjustment with this recorder. No calibration
should be attempted unless the power has been ON
for at least 20 minutes.
PREPARATION
1. Turn lock or key lock located inside the storage
compartment at the lower righthand corner of the
back wall on units with a Control End Recorder.
2. Raise and latch the control head or the upper face
panel cover.

Set Pen Switch on the control board as illustrated.


CHAMBER TEMPERATURE (S5) to ZERO.

3. Loosen two screws and lower the control box cover.

(6000 ft. and above)
M/C Units are programmed to recognize atmospheric
pressure as 13 2 psia. If the VENT phase remains
on for more than three minutes at initial start-up, the
pressure signal must be manually reset. The unit will
recognize the reset value as an atmospheric reading.
This Check and Calibration must be done

for high altitudes at initial start-up,

if the MAINS are off, or

in case of a power failure lasting longer than the


battery back-up time (1 minute).

Check
1. Make the Temperature and Pressure Calibrations
as described in Section 5 of this manual.
2. Open Door #0 using the manual mode if required.
Refer to Section 1.

5. Connect voltmeter to J10 on the control panel.

Positive terminal to Pin 13.

Negative terminal to Pin 12.

EXPLANATION AND TERMINOLOGY


For the purpose of this manual, the sensing devices are
called transducers and are explained below:
TEMPERATURE TRANSDUCER (RTD)
The temperature transducer, commonly known as an
RTD (Resistance Temperature Device), is a resistance
thermometer whose resistance at 0C is 100.00 Ohms.
Its resistance varies at the rate of approximately 0.35
Ohms/C.
[DIN Standard 43 760] [ = 0.00385]
The sensor output is fed into the programmed logic of
the control board through Connector Plug 9P.

PRESSURE TRANSDUCER (1PT)


The pressure transducer sensor is an integrated Whetstone bridge directly formed on a silicone diaphragm. It
has an excitation of 10.0 volts; its nominal output is 0 to
100 millivolts for pressure from 0 to 50 psia.
Any change in atmospheric pressure is sensed by the
pressure transducer at 0.025 second intervals before
the chamber is sealed. For steam cycles, the tolerance
band is wide enough for the door to be opened at the
end of the cycle for atmospheric changes that may be
encountered.

the connector.
5. Restore low and line voltage to the sterilizer.
6. Operate two consecutive wrapped goods cycles.
7. CHECK: Quickly touch the transducer probe. If the
transducer is

warm but can be held with the open hand


(27C), the seal is OK.

Too hot to hold (55C), reseal the transducer


probe.

RECORDER REPAIRS

REPLACING THE DISPLAY BOARD

SHOCK HAZARDDisconnect line voltage and low voltage electrical power to


prevent electrical shock or damage to
the electrical components before making
repairs.

Any repair of the display board is beyond the scope of


this manual. The board must be returned for factory
repairs.

The recorder receives its input signals from the control


panel. Any changes in temperature or pressure are
computed by the control panel before signaling the
recorder. When the control panel recorder switches are
changed from NORM to CAL, the sterilizer condition has
no effect on the recorder.

Before replacing the board, carefully check the items


listed below. This can show if the problem is in the
board or elsewhere.

WARNING

PEN LIFTER
If the pen lifter does not raise the pen from the chart
when the door is opened, loosen the set screw and
extend the lifting rods to engage the pen as it passes
the outermost chart line. If the pen arm is bent, kinked
or damaged, replace it.

DOOR REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS


The door on the M/C 3600 sterilizer weighs approximately 260 lbs. Removal and replacement will require
two people to lift and maneuver the door into position.

WARNING

NOTE

Due to the weight and the awkwardness


of the door special care must be taken
when handling the door to avoid injury.
Some method of raising and supporting
the 260 lb. door will be necessary when
removing and attaching the hinge shafts.
A portable overhead hoist would be the
ideal method to support the door with an
eye bolt can be installed in the hole in the
center of top edge of the door. Hydraulic
jacks under angle frame could also be
useful, however balancing the door on
the jacks could be tricky. Two large
wooden wedge shaped blocks on top of
a sturdy support surface works well to
raise the door the last few inches to the
proper height. Tap the wedges in or out
to adjust the height.

Replacement of the door will include:


1. Removal and replacement of the stainless steel
door cover.
2. Removal and replacement of door switch magnet
bracket.

NOTE

2. Remove the socket head screw from the hinge


bracket, located at the top of the door on the hinge
side. Swing the hinge bracket upward out of the
way. Do not remove the block with the large hole.
(See inset on Figure 6-27).
3. EARLY MODELS Remove the magnet mounting
bracket from the door. Retain the bracket to be
remounted on the new door.
LATER MODELS Remove the door switch magnetic block.
4. Open the door about 90 or enough to clear the
bottom cover and gain access to the hinge shafts
and place the support under the door (or hoist if
available).

DOOR REMOVAL
1. Remove the four screws securing the stainless steel
cover to the door.

rubber hinge shaft cover, leave the door
cover attached to the sterilizer. Swing
the door cover out of the way and place
something under the cover for support.

Have an assistant steady the door on the


support because the procedure in the
next step will free the door from the sterilizer.

5. With the door supported securely remove 2 snap


rings from the upper hinge shaft and slide the shaft
upward.

3. Replacement of the door.

On manual door models, the door handle


is secured with the same screws retaining the non-hinge side of the door cover.

When removing the lower shaft, DO NOT


lose any of the spacer washers between
the lower hinge block and the lowest
door hook. The spacer washers determine the height the door is positioned
against the gasket ring and must be replaced when the new door is attached.
Note, count the number of washers so
the same amount can be replaced.

6. Remove the 2 snap rings from the lower hinge shaft,


slide the lower shaft out from the bottom and move
the old door away.

NOTE

The replacement door is interchangeable for left or right hinged units. The
hinge blocks and the hinge bracket
mounting block (with large hole) are already attached to the replacement door.

7. Attach the replacement door in the reverse order of
the old door removal. Slide the upper hinge shaft in
from the top (grooves downward) and install the
upper snap ring to keep the shaft from falling
through when the lower shaft is being installed.
Carefully maneuver the door slightly to insert the
lower shaft (grooves upward). Be sure to replace
the same number of spacer washers between the
lower hinge block and the lowest door hook that
were removed.

ATTACHING COVERS

1. Move the replacement door into position as shown


in Figure 627.

Non-Hinge Hooks Cover

2. Align the upper hinge block with the holes in the tips
of the upper hinge hooks and slide the hinge shaft
in from the top (groove end down). Install the upper
snap ring in the groove.

Swing the non-hinge hooks cover back into position and


secure into place.

3. Carefully maneuver the door to align the lower hinge


block. Replace the same number to washers that
were removed, between the bottom of the lower
hinge block and the lower door hook and insert the
hinge shaft form the bottom (groove end up) and
install the two snap rings in the groove.

The replacement door must be drilled and tapped to


attach the door cover. All door covers are custom fitted
at the factory so pre-drilling can not be done.

Door Cover

1. Place the stainless steel door cover on the new


door, take care not to misalign the magnet bracket
at the bottom of the door.

4. Replace the second snap ring in the upper shaft.

5. Replace the magnet bracket.


6. Rotate the hinge bracket at the top of the door, back
into position and secure it to the block with the
socket head screw.
ALIGNMENT AND ADJUSTMENT
Perform the following procedures from Section 5:

Stop Block Adjustment
Door Stop Adjustment
Door Gasket Seal Adjustment

NOTE

The cover must be tight against the vertical angle on the door edge to allow hook
clearance and approximately 1/8" above
the door plate.

2. With the door in the closed position (for alignment


purposes), hold the cover firmly in position and
using a center punch through the mounting holes in
the cover, mark the four hole centers.
3. Using a 5/16" dia. bit and a 3/8-16 tap, drill and tap
the four cover mounting holes.
4. Attach the cover with the mounting hardware removed from the old door.
5. If a manual door, attach the pull handle.
6. Check the alignment of the non-hinge cover with the
door cover.

Repair
The cover mounting screws thread into adjustable
mounting blocks which are attached to the outside of the
hook angle. The screws that attach the mounting blocks
are accessible from the inside of the hook angle.
The cover must be attached to align, slightly loosen the
hex head bolts on the inside of the hook angle.
Close the door and push the cover until it is aligned as
desired and tighten the outside mounting screws.
Carefully open the door and tighten the hex bolts, recheck the alignment and readjust if necessary.

Clean the gasket groove with a cloth dampened with
alcohol. Be sure all the steam ports are open and
free of any debris or obstruction before installing the
gasket.
3. Wipe the gasket clean with a lint free cloth dampened with alcohol BEFORE and AFTER installation.
DO NOT STRETCH the gasket when cleaning.
4. Start the installation by placing the hole (near the
splice) in the gasket, over the vent tube in the lower
left corner of the gasket groove and press the
gasket into the groove at the corner. Press the
gasket into the groove about 12 inches each side of
the corner.
5. Locate the point on the gasket directly opposite the
vent tube corner and press the gasket into the upper
right corner of the gasket groove, DO NOT
STRETCH THE GASKET.

REPLACING THE DOOR GASKET


Proper installation of the door gasket is directly related
to the life expectancy of the gasket. Stretching or twisting of the gasket will cause shortened gasket life.
The door gasket is a tubular rubber gasket that fits into
the groove that encircles the chamber opening. To
ensure a solid seal the gasket groove is pressurized with
steam behind the gasket and the gasket is also pressurized from the inside to expand against the door surface.
Steam from the chamber pressurizes the gasket and
gasket groove, thus equalizing the pressure in the
chamber and the gasket.

TO INSTALL THE GASKET


1. Inspect the gasket groove to be sure there are no
sharp edges or burrs to damage the gasket.
2. There are four steam ports in the gasket groove
which are located in the corners of the gasket
groove. These steam ports pressurize the groove
and the gasket. The port in the lower left corner has
a vent tube that protrudes and fits into the hole in
the gasket to pressurize the inside of the gasket.

6. Find the midpoints of the gasket between the lower
left and upper right corners. Carefully press the
midpoints into the upper left and lower right corners.
DO NOT STRETCH THE GASKET.
An equal amount of gasket should be hanging
between the corners.

HEAT EXCHANGER CLEANING

handling Descaler to protect against eye
injury and stained clothing.

When a heat exchanger does not function properly due


to an accumulation of internal mineral deposits, clean it
with CASTLE Descaler. Remove the tubing from the top
and pour a solution of Descaler through the ejector.
After cleaning, run a dummy cycle to remove the descaler.
If mineral deposits are a continuing problem, establish
a periodic cleaning procedure. The frequency of cleaning will depend on the mineral content of the water.

7. Starting at the center of the sagging gasket, press


the remaining gasket into the groove working toward the corners. Take care not to twist or distort
the gasket as it is pressed into place.
The gasket will balloon slightly outside of the gasket
groove when seated fully.

The gasket should not gather or bunch


up at any point as it is being pressed into
the gasket groove. If it does, it was not
equally divided between the corners at
the start. Remove the gasket and start
over with Step 5.

Clean the gasket and mating door surface with


a lint free cloth dampened with alcohol.

BOOSTER PUMP
The following checks should be made BEFORE the
pump is started initially.
Check Rotation - Be sure that the pump operates in the
direction indicated by the arrow on the pump casing, as
serious damage can result if the pump is operated with
incorrect rotation. Make sure the shaft rotation is clockwise when looking at the motor end of the pump.
Check all connections to motor and starting device with
wiring diagram. Check voltage, phase and frequency on
motor nameplates with line circuit.
