evaluatingisimportantandyouconsiderwhatthestudentsthinkisimportant.Rubricsareacollaboration
betweenstudentandteacher.Astudentneedstoknowwhatgoodorexcellent"lookslike"ascomparedto
anaverage.WitheachrubricIalsogivereflectionquestions.Iaskthemtowriteabouttheworkofanother
studentandreallyquestionthemselvesastowhytheyrespondtothiswork.Theyassignadjectivestothe
worktheytellhowtheyare"moved."Ialsoaskwitheachwork"whatdoyouwantmetoconsiderin
evaluatingwhatyoudid?"Mostoftentheansweriseffortorexperimenting.Andthatiswhycomposition

I'vebeenusingrubricslongbeforetheybecamethethingtodo.Ineverknewanyotherwaytoevaluate
artwork.Mynumbersarequalifiedbeyondgoodandexcellent,etc.Theyneedtoknowwhatgoodis.It's
theonlywayrubricswork.Idon'teverjustcheckoffboxes,Imakelotsofcomments.
MygradinghasbecomemucheasiersinceIinitiateddailyobjectivelogs.Imakeaweeklysheetforeach
studenttocomplete.Theyentertheirobjectivesforthedayatthebeginningoftheperiodandreflecton
progressattheend.Ireadtheseeachdayandmakebriefcomments.Thisisalsoawayforthestudentsto
askmequestionswhenIdon'tgetaroundtoseeeachoneduringtheperiod.Sincethistakescareof
attendance,Ijustspendthetimereviewingratherthantakingroll.Itallowsmetogiveindividual
prompts.Ihaveestablisheditasroutine,soit'snotabigchore.Thekidsexpectitanditkeepsthemon
task.
Ithinkkidsunderstandandwanthonestevaluations.Theytoooftenunderestimatewhattheyhavedone,
and,willadmitwhentheyslack.Workwiththemtomakethedialogueandalwaysunderstand
