Sometimes Japanese people close their eyes with their arms crossed on their chest with a steam face
in business meetings .This gesture shows they are pondering or thinking about something and is usually
done by a senior member of the group, this gesture may confuse Americans in a meeting,as it gives a
strong impression of defensiveness, rejection or even anger.
This pondering gesture common in japan and it simply means this person is thinking about business at
hand.since there no eyes contact or verbal communication used during this gesture business people in the
US may view it as offensive .Perhaps next time you are in meeting and thinking about something ,I suggest
you go like this ,I bet people in the meeting will either find it funny or insulting. Now I'm just being facetious
here ,so don't actually do it.Facetious is an adjective which means playfully humorous .

11. RUBY OSORIO(VISUAL ARTIST,LA,CALIFORNIA )

Question:
you spent some time in japan, what is the biggest difference between Japan and the us ?
Answer: the biggest difference between japan and the us is the lack of physical space. On the one hand ,in
japan the lack of space can make you feel claustrophobic .
But ,on the other hand,it can also create situation where you are more intimate with people on a daily basis .
>if you were to choose one adjective to describe your artwork ,what would that be and why?
Answer:I would choose the adjective "enigmatic";but because when people look at my work,I think it's open
to many interpretations. And it's up to the viewer to figure out the mystery in each piece.
In the unite states, people sometimes scratch their head like this, when they are confused about
something an answer to a question. It's generally not good idea to scratch , it gives a negative impression to
others as it makes you look incompetent .I know in some cultures people scratch their head to show they're
embarrassed , but in the us ,you probably don't want to use this gesture too much.

you own interpretation in English of ruby's artwork ? It's tough , but it's going to be a great mental workout
for you .

SALONPAS COMMERCIAL

Today we are going to watch a television commercial for salonpas which aired in the United States . In
the commercial ,we'll hear applicable English expression that are used in everyday life. Let's first watch
video.., I would like you to try to understand what people in it are saying,it goes quite quickly, let's roll!
It was fast wasn't it? Hopefully you got the idea that is a commercial for a pain relief patch,Relief means to
ease or lessen something. So,a pain relief patch is a medical piece of material placed over an area of your
body in order to ease pain .
Salonpas is the only FDA approved OTC pain patch.
FDA = an acronym for the US food and drug administration. The FDA is responsible for regulating the
safety and effectiveness of all drugs and medical devices sold in the US.
OTC = an acronym for Over The counter ,over the counter drugs are medicines that you can buy at stores
without a prescription .
Prescription is a written direction from your doctor regarding use of a medicine . You will not be able to
purchase particular medication unless you have a doctor's prescription ,the symbol of prescription is Rx.
to keep up with someone means to move at the same rate as the person or to compete with
someone.
keeping up with the joneses ,refers to the Desire to be seen as being as good as one's neighbors.
get the power of a pill in a patch,
What this catch phrases suggest is that the salonpas patch is a medicated patch ( medicated =containing
medicines)
Because a majority of American consumers use pills or tablets for all kinds of aches , including muscle
pain .Some Americans don't even know patch product like salonpas have medicines in them.

13. JAME SCHOLNICK(VISUAL ART,FILM MAKER)LA.

Questions=
you lived in Japan for almost five years. What the biggest difference between Japan and the US?
Answer : In the United States ,we are very free to act the way we want to become whom we want to and
I just noticed in Japan they didn't have that freedom,I felt the societal conventions dictated a lot of behavior
what turns you off?(turn you off=disgusting you/bother you )
Answer: intolerance,When people are not accepting of other people's lifestyles/their behavior /their idea.
It's just shows ignorance and not very understanding
what would you like your tombstone to sAy?
Answer:she was an artist who gave a voice not only to hello kitty ,but to all voiceless creatures. In the
United States, when people meet someone in the first time, they usually shake hands, regardless of the
person's gender. It's pretty rare to kiss a stranger on the cheek, like a lot of Europeans do when they greet
people.Of course after you get to know the person well enoug, you can then hug him/her as a greeting
gesture
The word "hug" generally doesn't translate very well into a lot of Asian languages. The word hug means
to put your arms around someone and hold them tightly for a moment .I understand that in some Asian
countries ,if a man were to hug a women in public,it would be considered inappropriate unless they were a
couple . But in u.s. Hugging is very common.
A man and women hugging doesn't means they are romantically or sexually involved;Americans
sometimes even hug each other in business settings.Think about what you would like your tombstone to
say....,of course we don't want you to die anytime soon, but it's just an interesting exercise as it make you
think about how you want to life as well as how you would like to be remembered when you're gone..,,Fat

considered acceptable by society
