In the cold milling of m e t a l s a cooling and lubricating fluid (CLF) is supplied to the zone of contact
between the tool and the m a t e r i a l which e l i m i n a t e s the heat and r e d u c e s the friction coefficient. During
r e c i r c u l a t i o n the C L F gets qnickly contaminated by a b r a s i v e s , shavings, s c a l e s , and other products. It
h a s been shown in [1, 2] that the quality of the s u r f a c e t r e a t e d depends to a l a r g e extent on the purity of the
C L F . The s e t t l e r s , s i e v e s , and m a g n e t i c s e p a r a t o r s used to r e m o v e m e c h a n i c a l i m p u r i t i e s f r o m C L F a r e
not sufficient to provide the d e s i r e d d e g r e e of purification. An FMB-type m u l t i s t a g e filter with a p a p e r
band has been designed at the U k r N I l k h i m m a s h [3] for the purification of C L F (Fig. l a ) .
C o m p a r e d with the usual s i n g l e - s t a g e band f i l t e r s , the FMB f i l t e r s p o s s e s s a n u m b e r of advantages:
a l a r g e r filtering s u r f a c e , higher productivity, a lower building m a t e r i a l content, and s m a l l s i z e . The
t i m e r e q u i r e d f o r the r e p l a c e m e n t of a spent p a p e r band is only 15-20 s e e . The FMB filter is based on the
design of the FPAKM f i l t e r p r e s s [4] (Fig. lb), with h o r i z o n t a l m u l t i s t a g e a r r a n g e m e n t of the f i l t e r plates
between the top end plate 2 and the bottom end plate 5. The supporting plate 6 c a r r i e s the m e c h a n i s m 7 for
the tightening of the f i l t e r p l a t e s . The s c r e e n 3 in loop f o r m p a s s e s in a zigzag between the plates and is
m o v e d by the m e c h a n i s m 1. Between the b r a n c h e s of the s c r e e n r o i l s of f i l t e r p a p e r 4 a r e supplied to each

The FMB filter o p e r a t e s as follows. The filter is switched on and the tightening m e c h a n i s m tightens
the filter plates. The dirty C L F p a s s e s through the collector, and filters under the p r e s s u r e of the supply
pump through the f i l t e r and the s c r e e n e n t e r s the c h a m b e r s thus formed. The filtrate leaves the filter
f r o m the draining c h a m b e r and through the appropriate collector. The mechanical impurities r e m a i n on
the p a p e r s u r f a c e . As: the m e c h a n i c a l i m p u r i t i e s on the p a p e r accumulate, the filtering p r e s s u r e inc r e a s e s . When the m a x i m u m p e r m i s s i b l e p r e s s u r e is reached the supply of C L F is interrupted and c o m p r e s s e d a i r is supplied to d r a i n the liquid f r o m the filtering c h a m b e r s . When this operation is finished,
the tightening m e c h a n i s m r e l e a s e s the plates and the band drive shifts the used paper f r o m the space between the plates and f r e s h p a p e r is supplied into the space between the plates f r o m the p a p e r rolls. A new
filtering c y c l e then s t a r t s . The operation of the filter is fully automated. The maintenance man has 0nly
to r e p l a c e the p a p e r rolls, which needs to be done e v e r y 5-10 days.

The FlVIB f i l t e r s a r e now available in three dimensions. They are produced by the , P r o g r e s s , c h e m i cal engineering plant at B e r d i c h e v . These multistage filters can be applied s u c c e s s f u l l y for the cleaning
of emulsions used on cold rolling mills for steel sheet and milling lines in engineering plants, of the soda
solution used in grinding, and of aqueous solutions of surfactants and m i n e r a l oil. The filters usually work
with type A cotton p a p e r and type B v i s c o s e paper, manufactured by the Shigonsk paper mill. P a p e r A r e moves p a r t i c l e s down to 20-30 um and paper B down to 30-50 pm, Approximately 40,000 rubles per annum
can be saved by using a single FMB filter for the purification of C L F . T h e i r use i n c r e a s e s the quality of
the s u r f a c e treated and the productivity. The design of the FMB filters r e p r e s e n t s a new and p r o g r e s s i v e
solution in filter design and has been patented in many c o u n t r i e s .
