V. LEARNING MATERIAL
Determining the pH by using some indicators.
The simple indicators like litmus paper or fenolftalein only give the description
about the properties of solution (acid, base, or neutral), but it doesnt show the pH.
Litmus paper for example, gives red colour in the solution that have pH untill 5,5. It
means that litmus paper cant differ the solution that have pH 1 from 2 or 2 from 3, etc.
Because of the pH trayek of each indicators, so the pH of solution can be determined by
the combination of some indicators.
Example : A blue solution if its dropped by blue bromtymol indicator (6,0-7,6) and
colorless by using fenolftalein indicators (8,3-10,0). What is the pH of its
solution?
Answer : If it is used Blue Bromthymole indicator and produce blue colour, it means that
the pH of solution more than 7,6. If it is used phenolphtalein indicator and
colorless, it means that the pH less than 8,3.
So, the pH of solution between 7,6-8,3.
7,6 < pH < 8,3
