CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
According to Sanchez (2010), your study habits play a big role in determining
your success in the learning process. Study habits are the ways that you acquire
knowledge that you have formed during your school years. Study habits can be good
ones or bad ones. Good study habits include being organized, keeping good notes,
reading your textbooks, listening in class and working every day. Negative study habits
include skipping class, not doing your work, watching television or playing video games.
Therefore, negative study habits of students are not helpful for a better education. Study
habits are defined as the regular tendencies and practices that one depicts during the
process of gaining information through learning. The manner with which you
consistently use to study for school or college even for next day lesson plans if you are
a teacher. It means you are not distracted by anything; you have a certain place to go
where it is quiet everyday where you study and do homework.
Studying is a skill. Being successful in school requires a high level of study skills.
Student must first learn these skills, practice them and develop effective study habits in
order to be successful. Very often the study habits and practices developed used in high
school do not work for students in college. Good study habits include many different
skills: time management, self-discipline, concentration, memorization, organization and
effort. Desire to succeed is important, too. Knowing how you learn best is the first step
in developing effective study habits. Every student approaches the task of learning

differently and students has a unique and personal learning style or a preferred channel
though which learning comes easily. (Calderon & Dela Paz, 2004)
Students grapple with many issues in their lives, and because of all of the
competing things for your attention, it is hard to concentrate on studying. The key to
effective studying is not cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter. (Grohol,
2006)
Learning is also connected to studying. Learning is acquiring new or modifying
existing, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve
synthesizing different types of information and a continuous process. There are many
ways to attain learning. One way to attain learning is by studying at school. School is an
institution to help people to learn. One should study not only in school but also outside
of the school. One should know how to manage their time and the things they will do.
Good study habit takes place but we know that there are many things that affect our
study habit that is why many students are failing their grades. (Ireland, 2007)
Instead of dealing with other topics, the researchers decided to focus on the
negative factors affecting the study habits because the researchers want to help the
students know the things that they should avoid and the importance of study habits. The
researchers also want the students know how to develop good study habits, how to
manage their time wisely and how to be disciplined to have a better education and a
better future.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the negative factors affecting the study habits of
the students.
It also aimed to answer the following questions:
1
2
3
4

What is study habit?

What are the common negative factors affecting the study habits of the student?
What are the negative outcomes if a study habit is affected?
How can a person develop a good study habit?

Significance of the Study

This section enumerates the different groups of people who will benefit from the
study. In addition, it states the specific benefits that these groups will get from the study.
Students. Knowledge of this study would be able to help students facilitate
understanding within their studies. They will learn the value of serious study, how to
work independently and to manage their time wisely, how to lessen their problems
inside the school and they will also learn and know the things that they should avoid for
their studies. The study habits that they need to develop can be applied in other areas
of their lives as well; their job, career, or an activity that requires thought, planning,
information processing, and self-discipline. Students will find that once they develop
effective study habits, the job of studying and learning will become easier, instead of
working harder, students will be working smarter.
Instead of dealing with other studies, the researchers decided to focus on the
negative factors affecting the study habits of the students because

Parents. This research paper would help parents to guide their child for a better
future. They will assist them on how to deal with their child properly. Even though
college students already know how to make decisions by themselves, parents must still
create an environment conducive to learning and give the students some advice.
Teachers. Teachers would benefit from this study because they would be able to
help the students improve their study habits by creating a good communication with
them. They will assist them how to handle students with problems in coping in school.
They will persuade them through helping them realize the good way of studying.
Future researchers. This study is crucial for future researchers to make similar
studies especially since there still seems to be a need for study habits. The researchers
believe that if future studies would be made, utilizing this paper as a source if valuable
data, there might be an improvement in the wrong lifestyle of many students they will
also persuade them through helping them realize the good way of studying.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses about the negative factors affecting the study habits of the
students. Moreover, the researchers believe that people have to know the main factors
that affect the study habits of the students. This research paper would like to establish
negative factors affecting study habits.
Definition of Terms

This section defines some technical terms that the researchers used in the study.
Terms that have specialized meanings or operational definitions are stated in order to
have multiple interpretation among readers.

College is an institution of higher learning that grants the bachelors degree in liberal
arts.
Development is a process of starting experience or suffers from an ailment or feeling.
Education is a process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a
school.
Factor is a circumstance, fact, or influence that contributes to a result or outcome.
Professor is a teacher of the highest rank in college or university.
Study habits are behaviors used when preparing for test or learning academic material.
Undergraduate is a student at a college or university who has not yet earned a
bachelors or equivalent degree.

CHAPTER 2

DISCUSSION
This section presents the summary of the problems investigated, methods and
findings of the research. It cites the inferences made in order to answer the research
questions posed and it also gives possible things to do for the beneficiaries of the
research in order to make the study useful.
What is study habit?
According to WikiAnswers (2013), study habits are the ways that you acquire
knowledge that you have formed during your school years. Study habits can be good
ones or bad ones.
Sarah Alcock (2012) also stated that habits are also the ways you do things when
you are studying that affect how well you learn. Having effective study habit means that
you learn well, and as much as possible, in the time that you have.
What are the common factors affecting the study habits of the students and what are
the negative outcomes if study habit is affected?
There are common factors affecting the study habits of the students. First is the
advanced technology. According to John Mack (2013), technology and the Internet
make learning easier. Therefore, students may not be developing important values such
as hard work, the will to learn, and the ability to grapple with problems because
technology and the Internet can just give them the answers. Todays advanced
technologies do more to distract students than to help them academically. The students
will become lazy every time they use technology. They sit in the house all day watching

television, playing video games, using computer and using their cell phones. Wrong
usage of advanced technology will also boil down the self discipline of the students.
Second is the negative influence of friends. As stated by Valerie Ulene
(2011), the influence that friends exert over one another as teenagers is clearly powerful
and far too often, undesirable. Unhealthy behaviors can be almost contagious among
kids this age. Students, whose friends smoke, drink or use drugs, for example, are more
likely to indulge in these behaviors themselves. It can also make the difference between
good and bad grades at school. Students whose friends were prone to misbehave didn't
do as well in school as kids whose friends were socially active in positive ways, such as
participating in sports at school or completing their homework on time.
Third is the poor time management. As indicated by Evie Sellers (2009), students
who have poor time management skills may face serious consequences at school
because they are unable to complete tasks in an appropriate time frame.
Last is the personal problem. According to Chelsea Abraham (2008), whatever is
going on in a students personal life, will inevitably affect what is going on in school.
Whatever is happening in school will also affect what is going on in their personal life. A
student needs time to be in class and appropriate time for studying. Therefore, if study
habit is affected, students will lose focus on their studies that will cause them to fail.
How can a person develop a good study habit?
According to Tom Viren (2009), to develop a good study habit, you should study
for at least a total of an hour every day before the next class. Second, do not let social
activities or advanced technologies take priority before studying. Third, manage your

time wisely. And the most important, you have to discipline yourself and you also need
to have self motivation.

CHAPTER 3

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This section presents the summary of findings, conclusions and recommendations
drawn from the result in gathering data.
Summary
This paper attempted to determine the negative factors affecting the study habits
of students. The research design used in this study is the descriptive method wherein
data from documents were used to answer the research questions. The research
findings are the following:
Study habits play a big role in determining your success in the learning process.
There are two kinds of study habits, the good and bad study habits. The researchers
found out that the negative common factors affecting the study habits of students are
the advanced technology, personal problems, influence of friends, class schedule and
especially, poor time management.
Conclusion
The researchers drawn the following conclusion based on the findings of this
study:
The researchers can conclude that technology, influence of friends, personal
problems and poor time management can affect the studies of a student because some
students dont know how to discipline themselves. Students who have poor time
management skills may face serious consequences at school because they are unable
to complete tasks in an appropriate time. The students will also lose focus on their

studies and will become lazy because of these common factors that will cause them to
fail. In the researchers opinion, of all the five factors tackled in this study, advanced
technology is the most common factor that can affect the study habits of students based
on their experience.
Recommendations
After drawing the conclusions of the study, the researchers made the following
recommendations:
First, the students must learn studying skills, practice them and develop effective
study habits in order to be successful. Second, students should also know how to avoid
the negative factors that can affect their studies. Third, students should know the right
usage of technologies to avoid failing grades. Next, students are not supposed to bring
their personal problems to school because such problems might affect their academic
performance. Students must also learn how to work independently and to learn how to
manage their time wisely. Students should stay away from bad influenced friends
because they cant help them in their studies. In addition, students are responsible for
their own success in the learning process. Last, they should be actively involved in the
learning process and should behave appropriately for a learning environment.
Future researchers can use this research paper to make similar studies
especially since there still seems to be a need for study habits. Future researchers can
also add information on other kinds and types of factors affecting the study habits for
further understanding of the topic.
