Changes in standards
The design rules according to the
old DIN 1986-2 changed with the
introduction of DIN EN 12056-3
and DIN 1986-100. The old stipulation of a fill factor f=0.20 was
changed to a new maximum fill
factor f=0.33.

ACO Passavant flat roof drains

were tested by an independent
institute to determine their drainage capacities. The result was
much higher drainage values.

Nom. width =
internal diameter of
rainwater
downpipe
in (mm) DN

This means that when selecting

efficient roof drains, it is possible
to dimension the downpipe
cross-section* in open channel
systems much smaller than before.

JET Cast iron and stainless steel flat roof drains

for siphonic drainage

Planning notes

Functional principle and

design

Planning notes and

system requirements

Two different types of drainage

systems are used to drain roofs:
open channel drainage and siphonic
drainage.
ACO Passavant has solutions for
both systems.
The roof drains described here are
specially designed for siphonic drainage systems.

In siphonic drainage systems, the

drain pipes are operated completely full of water once the reference
amount of rainwater collects on the
roof. This means that they have a
fill factor h/d of 1.0.
Optimal flow conditions are only
achieved when the drain pipes are
completely full of water.

Minimum fall: 4.2 m

The ACO JET flat roof drains are

designed to operate with completely filled pipes unlike open channel
drainage systems.
Siphonic drainage systems are
planned in accordance with
DIN EN 12056-3 and DIN 1986-100.
The system calculations required
are undertaken in accordance with
VDI 3806.
As soon as the reference amount
of rainwater has accumulated, the
system operates with completely
filled drain pipes which drain the
roof siphonically. The flow losses
are counteracted by using the geodetic pressure between the roof
drain and the point where the siphonic drainage system enters the
open channel drainage system.

To achieve this, it is essential

amongst other things to ensure
that no air is sucked in a vortex
through the flat roof drain into the
drain pipe.
The formation of vortexes is successfully prevented by the ACO
JET flat roof drains by the integration of special components.

Hydraulic confirmation is required

on a case-by-case basis for siphonic drainage systems.
We can provide the following planning assistance upon request:
Calculating the number and
position of roof drains
Hydraulic calculations for the
siphonic roof drainage system
Determining the drain pipe geometry, specifying the nominal
width of the pipes and fittings
required

Minimum flow rate:

0.7 m/s

Reference rainfall:
Reference rainfall in accordance
with DIN EN 12056 Section 3 and
DIN 1986, Section 100; green
roofs in accordance with DIN EN
12056 Section 3 and DIN 1986,
Section 100, regulations for green
roofs.
Distance between drains:
Flat roof drains max. 20 m
Gutter drains max. 10 m

The vacuum created in the drainage system quickly and reliably

drains the roof.
This is achieved when the drain
pipes are completely full by harnessing the geodetic pressure difference between the roof drain and
the outflow into the open channel
drainage system. The geodetic
pressure counteracts the flow losses.

Backflow level / smoothing section:

Only pipelines above the back-flow
level are designed as siphonic roof
drains. Drain pipes below the backflow level must be designed as conventional open channel drain pipes
in accordance with DIN EN 12056
/ DIN 1986, Section 100.
Discharge speed when partially full
max. 2.5 m/s in accordance with
DIN EN 12056.

Pressure flow calculations are

necessary to guarantee the reliability of the overall system. The calculations are based on the volume of
flow and the flow rate which itself
is calculated from the reference
rainwater amount to be drained
from the roof.

Roofs with different heights:

Because roofs can catch different
amounts of rain during extreme
wind conditions (driving rain), angled roofs must be drained using
separate downpipes.

Other influencing factors are:

Emergency overflows:
In accordance with VDI 3806,
DIN 1986 section 100, subsection
9.3.10, and DIN EN 12056 subsection 3.7.4, adequate emergency
drians must be installed in large
built-in roof drainage systems - particularly on trapezoidal sheet metal
roofs.
According to DIN EN 12056, section 3, subsection 7.6.6. and
DIN 1986, section 100, subsection
9.2, rainwater pipes laid inside buildings also need to be protected
against condensation water.
Car and pedestrian surfaces:
The use of siphonic drain systems
in car parking decks, terraces etc.
frequented by pedestrians, is problematic because of the risk of
drain blockages.
The use of siphonic drainage
systems in green roofs and reversed roofs is, however, possible.
Concrete surfaces:
(see DIN 1986, part 100, para
9.1.1)
Unsealed concrete surfaces must
not be drained using flat roof
drains.
In accordance with DIN 1986-100,
surfaces consisting of cemented
materials exposed to rain cannot
be connected to built-in rainwater
drainage systems unless the surface has already been sealed beforehand.

Fixations for GM-X steel drain pipe

Because of the relatively low

strength of trapezoidal steel sections, special care must be taken
when putting the pipe clamps in
place, and particularly for fixed
point supports.
Fixed points should be selected
wherever possible directly on trusses or supports.
Depending on the dimensions of
the drain pipe and the distance between the trusses, it may be necessary for GM-X rainwater pipes to be
provided with additional lateral support with suitable pipe clamps.
