chapters,youwillgraduallycreateandevaluateasmallsampleproject.Sothatyoucansuccessfully
followtheinstructions,weassumethatyouhavealreadyinstalledEPLANandhavetherequiredsoftware
protection(dongle)andlicense.Whilewritingthisguide,weusedthefullylicensedprogramwithitsentire
scopeoffunctionality.Ifyouhavenotlicensedallthemodules,thisdocumentation(orsomefiguresin
thisdocumentation)maypossiblygobeyondthescopeoffunctionalityofthesoftwareyouhave
purchased,thatis,functionsarealsodescribedwhichmaynotbeavailabletoyou.Theuserinterfaceof
yourEPLANapplicationmaydifferfromthefigurespresentedhereif,intheSelectscopeofmenudialog,

familiarwithEPLAN,werecommendtheBeginnermode.Thatisthemodeweusedwhencreatingthis

upprogramfunctions,youoftenalsohaveadditionalbuttonsonthetoolbarsand/orkeycombinations
(e.g.,[Ctrl]+[C]tocopyelements).Sincealistofthedifferentcallupoptionswouldmakethisguide
muchlarger,weusuallyusethemousecontrolsintheactioninstructions.
10. 10.StartingEPLANStartingEPLANInthischapter,youwilllearnhowtostartEPLANeasily.During
programinstallation,aprogramiconiscreatedontheWindowsDesktop.Youcanusethisicontostart
EPLANimmediately.1.DoubleclicktheEPLANiconEPLANstarts.Ifyouarenotworkingwith
EPLANrightsmanagement,theSelectscopeofmenudialogwillopen.Here,youspecifytheusermodein
whichyouwouldliketodefinethedisplayedscopeofthemenu.2.IntheSelectscopeofmenudialog,
selectExpert.3.Click[OK].InadditiontothemainEPLANwindow,EPLANwillbydefaultthenopen

toKnowinAdvanceWhatistheEPLANmainwindow?Themainwindowistheentireworkingareaof
theprogramitssizeandpositioncanbechanged.Formanyotherinterfaceelements(e.g.,menubars,
toolbars,"dockable"windowslikethePagenavigator)themainwindowismoreorlessthe"frame".You
canattach("dock")theseelementstothewindowedgesinsidethemainwindow.WhatisthePage
navigator?ThePagenavigatorisawindowinwhichEPLANshowsthepagesofallopenprojects.You
canchoosebetweentworepresentationtypes.Inthetreeview,thepagesaredisplayedhierarchicallyby
pagetypeandidentifier(suchashigherlevelfunction,mountinglocation,etc.).Inthelistview,this
informationisshownarrangedinatable.Youcanswitchbetweenthetwoviewsbyclickingonthe

correspondingtab.InthePagenavigator,youcaneditthepagesofoneproject,forinstance,copypages,
deletethem,orchangepageproperties.Multiplepagesfromdifferentprojectscannotbeeditedatone
time.Tip:ToshowandhidethePagenavigatorquickly,youcanusethe[F12]key.WhatistheGraphical
preview?TheGraphicalpreviewisapreviewwindowfortheminimizeddisplayofhighlightedpages,
symbols,imagefiles,macros,forms,etc.Forexample,ifyouhavehighlightedoneorseveralpagesinthe
pagenavigator,theywillbedisplayedinaminimizedwindowintheGraphicalpreview.Usingthis
window,youcanquicklysearchthroughallthepagesofaproject.

ElementsTitlebarThehorizontalbaratthetopedgeofaWindowsapplicationisthetitlebar.Itcontains
theprogramiconwiththesystemmenu,theprogramname,andthebuttonscontrollingthesizesettingof
thewindow.Ifyouhaveopenedaprojectpage,thenameoftheopenedpagewillalsobeshowninthetitle
barbydefault.Example:Thisishowthetitlebarlooksifyouhaveopenedthepage=ANL+SCP/1inthe
projectEPLAN_start,whichyouwillcreatelater.Note:Theinformationyouseeadditionallyforan
openedpageinthetitlebar("Page"/"Project+Page"/"Projectpath+Project+Page")dependsonthe
Displayintitlebarsetting.Toaccesstherelevantdialog,selecttheOptions>Settings>User>Display>
Userinterfacemenupath.MenubarThemenubarislocatedbelowthetitlebar.Itcontainsthemost
importantcommandsanddialogcalls.Inordertoshowallthemenuitemsofamenu,leftclickonthe
correspondingmenu.Untilyouhaveopenedaprojectandapage,youwillnotbeabletoselectmanyof
themenuitems.Thesemenuitemsareshowninagrayedoutview.Somemenuitemsworklikeaswitch,
thatis,theycanbeturnedonoroff.ThisappliesparticularlytotheViewmenufortheGraphicalpreview
menuitem.Iftheoptionisswitchedon,thenthisisindicatedwithaprecedingcheckmark.
