CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIZATIONAL STUDY

Todays world need a corporate world and it requires a lot of management
activities to achieve success, for this purpose in this competing world of
multinationals and industries , industrial revolution has brought with it group
production and group consumption activities and also it has brought in a lot of
corporations competing for preferences and success in the business world, it
may be a manufacturing industry or any other type of industry experience and
specialisation, have become a must to compete with others become very much
essential for all the companies.
Lecturers teach the students; this learning will make an individual
knowledgeable in theory of the various functions of a company. But a person
comes out from class room and visits various industries, in this situation he can
learn more from them. In such a situation real experience in the practical
functioning and operations of a company can be of very much use to the
students of management studies.
For this purpose of acquiring practical knowledge of the working and
functioning of a company JMG University has incorporated an In plant training
into its business management schedule. This implant training tells us how the
different departments in the organization work as a single unit.
In the present business world, manufacturing industry has grown significantly
since last few decades and is also faced by the cut-throat competition in every
area. A lot of Research and Development is also being carried out to keep abrest
in the industry and produce innovative products. The manufacturing affair has
become more institutionalized and modernized with the advent of electronic and
computer knowledge about the application of management principles, customer
orientation, service efficiency, quality compliance, financial management,
competitive strategies and other important aspects that an MBA student should

get knowledge of. Fortunately, I had the privilege of carrying out my

Organizational study in a manufacturing company, Maria Industries Ltd.
Maria Industries Ltd is a partnership business formed by Mr.Joby Jones,
Mr.Pradeep C Scaria and Mr.Binu Jose. The business was started in the year
1998 at Gandhinagar,Kottayam district of Kerala. Maria Industries is
specialized in the business of bag manufacturing. The company has products
under the brand name of Marvel bags,Campus Birds, Ludandan and Hummer
trolly.
During the study, i gathered information relating to Organizational structure,
various departments and their functions, products, quality policies, procedures
and SWOT analysis of the company. Various methods were applied in order to
make my study effective and wholesome.
This study has certainly helped me to add one more dimension in my pursuits to
understand the management theories, principles and practices.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF LITERATURE

2.1 ORGANIZATION
A social unit of people that is structured & managed to meet a need or pursue
collective goals. All organizations have a management structure that
determines relationships between the different activities and the members, and
subdivides

and assigns roles, responsibilities,

and authority to

carry

out

different tasks. Organizations are open systems--they affect and are affected by
their environment.
Basically, nature of organization can be viewed in two ways:
Organization as a process
Organization as a structure or framework of relationship

1. Organization as a Process
As a process, organization is an executive function. It is the process of
determining, arranging, grouping &assigning the activities to be performed for
the attainment of objectives. It becomes a managerial function involving. The
following objectives:
I.
II.
III.
IV.
V.

Determining activities the necessary for the accomplishment

of the business objectives.
Division of work.
Grouping of inter-related activities.
Assigning duties to persons with requisite competence.
Delegating authority

VI.

Coordinating the efforts of different persons &groups.

When we consider organization as a process, it becomes the function of

every manager. Organizing is a continuous process &goes on throughout the
life-time of an enterprise. Whenever there is a change in the circumstances or
material change in situation, new type of activities spring up.
The process of organization thus, involves dividing the work in a rational
way and integrating the activities with work situations &personnel. It also
represents humanistic view of the enterprise since it is the people who are
uppermost in the process of integration of activities. Continuous review
adjustment makes it dynamics as a well.
2. Organization as a Structure
The term organization structure refers a machine of management, in its
achievement of the ends, determined by its administration. In a short
organization structure refers a well-defined system which people require for the
execution of their work responsibilities. It helps then to relate to each other,
coordinate their activities and achieve organizational goal or targets. It
minimizes confusion, suitable work behaviour& maximizes effectiveness.
Organizing is treated as one of the important function in process.

2.2 TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONS

Organization structure varies from industry to industry. According to the
nature of business the structure may form in the following ways.
a) Line Organization
It is the military type organization, where each department is generally a
complete self-sustaining unit; each department is under the control of

department head

who is completely responsible for organization the

department. All department heads are responsible to the general manager; he is

responsible to the managing director.
b) Line & staff Organization
Here the work is dividing to two broad divisions viz, the staff that is
responsible for planning &the line for the actual execution of the work. Here the
staff personnel give only advice to the line officials. But do not enforce it, i.e.,
staff member are thinkers & the line members are doers.
c) Functional Organization
Here employees are grouped together on the basis of the primary skill
need to do their job. Those structures offer the organization two way
advantages.
Encourage technical expertise.
Reduce duplication of activities.
The main elements that determine to make on organization are
people, tasks, structure &technology where in the organization takes in some of
there as inputs to derive the desired outputs. While doing so, the following
management process work independently to run a successful organization i.e.

Planning
Organizing
Staffing
Directing
Controlling

Also the management though out have changed &evolved from the prescientific management period to early management approach &to modern

management. There are six elements those managers to address when they
design their organization structure.

Work Specialization
Departmentalization
Chain of command
Centralization
Formalization &Decentralization

2.3 ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Organizational development is a collection of planned change, interventions
built on humanistic democratic values seeks to improve organizational
effectiveness &well-being.

CHAPTER III
DESIGN OF STUDY

3.1 INTRODUCTION ABOUT RESEARCH

Research is a creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to
increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture &
society. The basic purpose of the research is to find answers to questions
through the application of scientific methods.
Statement of the research
The research deals with an organization study conducted at MARIA
INDUSTRIES, KOTTAYAM.
Area of the Study
The focus of research being overall organization study, the study was
conducted in the organization as a whole especially the various departments of
MARIA industries Gandhinagar, Kottayam.
Research design
Research design is considered as the framework or plan for a study that
guides as well as helps the data. The research design may be exploratory,
descriptive &experimental for the present study.

3.2 TYPES OF RESEARCH

1. Descriptive vs. Analytical Research
Descriptive research includes surveys & fact finding enquiries of
different kinds. The major purpose of the descriptive research is description of
the state of affairs in it exits at present. In social science and business research
we quite often use the term export to research for descriptive research studies.

The main characteristics of this method are that the researcher has no
control over the variables. He can only report what has happened or what is
happening.
In analytical research, on the other hand, the researcher has to use facts or
information already available & analyze these to make a critical evaluation of
the materials.
2. Applied vs. Fundamental research
Research can either be applied (or action) or fundamental (to basic of
pure) research. Applied research aims at finding solution for an immediate
problem facing a society or an industrial business organization whereas
fundamental research is mainly concerned with generalization & with the
formulation of a theory.
3. Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research
Quantitative research is based on the measurement of quantity or amount.
It is applicable to phenomena that can be expressed in terms of quantity.
Qualitative research is on the other hand is concerned with qualitative
phenomenon i.e., Phenomenon relating to or involving quality or kind.
4. Conceptual vs. Empirical research
Conceptual research is that related to some abstract ideas or theory. It is
generally used by philosophers & thinkers to develop new concepts or to
reinterpret existing ones.
On the other hand Empirical research relies on experience or observation
alone, often without due regard for system & theory. It is based or coming up
with conclusions which are capable of being verified by observation or
experiment. Evidence gathered through experiments or empirical studies is

today considered to be the most powerful support possible for a given

hypothesis.
5. Some other types of research
All other types of research are variations of one or more of the above
stated approaches, based on either the purpose of research, or the time required
to accomplish research, on the environment in which research is done or on the
basis of some other similar factor.
3.3 RESEARCH APPROACH
The above descriptions of the types are bringing to facts that are two base
approaches to research.
Quantitative approach
Qualitative approach
Quantitative Approach:
In the research is based on measurable quantities. There for data in this
approach, are available in the quantitative form. This approach can further
classified into experimental, simulation & inferential approaches. In this
approach some variables are manipulated to observe their effect on the
variables. & also sample is selected from the universe & it is suited from the
population.
Qualitative Approach:
Quantitative approach is to research is concerned with subjective
assessment of opinions, attitudes. Research in such a situation is a function of

researchers impression & insight. Such an approach to research generates

results either in non-quantitative form or in the form which are not subjected to
rigorous quantitative analysis.
3.4 TECHNIQUES OF DATA COLLECTION
In dealing with any real life problem it is often found that data at hand are
in an adequate &hence it becomes necessary to collect data that are appropriate.
There are several ways of collecting the appropriate data which differ
considerably in content of money costs, time &other resources at the disposal of
the research depending on the source statistical data are classified under two
categories,
Primary data
Secondary data
PRIMARY DATA
Primary data are obtained by a study specifically designed to fulfill the
data needs of the problem at hand. Such data are original in character and are
generated in large number of surveys conducted mostly by environment &also
by some individuals, institution, and research bodies.
Sources of primary data
1. By Observation: This method implies the collection of information by way
of investigators own observation, without interviewing the respondents.
The information obtained relates to what is currently happening and is not
complicated by either the past behavior or future intensions of respondents.

2. Through personal interview: The investigator follows a rigid procedure&

seeks answers to a set of pre-conceived questionnaire through personal
interview.
3. Through telephone interview: This method of collecting information
involves

contacting the respondents on telephone itself. This is not a

widely used method but it plays an important role in industrial surveys in

developed regions.
4. By mailing questionnaire: Questionnaires are method to the respondents
with a request to return after completing the dame. It is the most extensively
used in various economic &business surveys.
5. Through schedules: Under this method the enumerators are appointed &
given training. They are provided with schedules containing relevant questions.
These enumerators go to the respondents with the schedules.
SECONDARY DATA
The secondary data constitute the chief materials on the basis of which
statistical work is carried out in many investigations. In fact, before collecting
primary data it is desirable that one should go through the existing literature and
learn what is already known of the general area in which the specific problem
falls and all surrounding information that may give us leads & lessons.

CHAPTER IV
INDUSTRIES PROFILE

4.1.INDUSTRY PROFILE
4.1.1 .GLOBAL SCENARIO
The worldwide luggage market includes a wide range of products that vary in
quality and prices. Premium luggage bags are costly, high quality, full-featured
products and have selective distribution. In addition, there is a broad middle
market in which products are differentiated by features, brand name and price.
Both organized and unorganized players operate in this segment. Within this
market, sales are largest at mid and low product price levels. Product
differentiation decreases and breadth of distribution increases at lower price
levels. At the lower end of the luggage market, unbranded or private label
products with few differentiating features are sold in significant volumes and at
low margins, competing primarily on the basis of price.
Further, the report states that the increasing competition from local brands and
counterfeit products is one of the main challenges hindering the growth of the
market. This competition has led to market fragmentation, which has, in turn,
resulted in several issues such as lack of price standardization, an uneven
competitive scenario and market share erosion.
The key factors driving growth of the global luggage industry include rising
global economy, increasingly improving travel and tourism industry, escalating
disposable income, increasing urban population and accelerating market and
promotional efforts. Some of the noteworthy developments of this industry
include changing product trend, increasing demand of ultra-light weight
materials made up of polycarbonate resins, new innovations and increasing
contribution of travel and tourism, which includes luggage market as well, in
the global economy. However, the growth of luggage industry is hindered by the
adverse economic conditions, acts
restrictions.

of

counterfeiting

and

trade

EFFECT OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM

Being one of the worlds largest industries, travel and tourism industry greatly
influences the luggage market. Almost any event that affects the travel industry
similarly affects the luggage industry. In fact, even a shallow cyclical fall in
travel industry would affect the luggage market, and weaken growth prospectus.
Increasing cross-border and internal migrations influences the luggage market
to a great extent. Migration from one place to another or from one country to
another indirectly escalates the demand for luggage. Luggage producers are
focusing more on research and development, expending their money and time,
to design and manufacture luggage with high quality materials and advanced
features. The linkage of luggage with fashion demands that luggage suppliers
constantly innovate to meet evolving lifestyles and trends.
CHANGING TRENDS
There are a number of broad lifestyle trends that affect buying behaviour, other
are short-term or product-specific trends that are usual seasonal in nature.
Fashion no longer just for women.
Media playing stronger role in branding.
Fashion trends - casual dressing, the fetishlook, styles from the 1930s and
1940s, futuristic fashion favoring high impact materials, colors, tech
accessories.
All products in this market sector are affected by fashion in varying degrees.
Handbags are most affected by fashion, while luggage is less affected.
Accessories are taking a much bigger proportion of womens clothing
expenditure, and they are less price sensitive than clothing.
GREEN CONSUMERS (eco - style)
Care and concern for the enviomment are increasing. Hence, the materials used
in manufacturing and packaging, the social conditions under which a product is
made, are rising in importance.

SOPHISTICATED CONSUMERES
Consumers are increasingly well - informed and knowledgeable about the
purchases they make, as a result of living in an information age Much
information is obtained from the internet, which will increasingly become more
important sales channel. The level of quality is getting more important for the
items purchased.
The rapidly changing fashion enviornment will continually provide new
opportunities,
Bag for long/short trips, items should be lighter and more compact.
Growing

of

enviommental

opportunities.
As the middle class is growing in all countries, demand of luxury and branded
imported goods, is set to grow.
New markets for different target groups, such as men, teenagers and baby
boomers.
Laptop bags and items for business women.
4.1.2.INDIAN SCENARIO
What is the current business scenario in luggage ware segment in India?
The Indian industry for molded and soft luggage bags is estimated at Rs. 4.000
crores. However, the unorganized segment accounts for nearly 50%. Due to
significant demand, the sector is growing at 20% per annum.
What drives the demand?
India is witnessing a steep rise in travelling domestically and overseas. For
instance, in Gujarat a large number of people have relatives abroad and that
actually propel the demand for branded luggage ware. Also, the summer will see
lots of people travelling and on the other hand the business travelling always
plays a key role in rising demand for luggage ware.

What are the challenges faced by the industry?

Till few years back, the unorganized segment in this industry was giving a tough
competition to the branded players with 25-30% low cost. However, due to
increased demand for durable branded luggage ware, now the ratio stays at
50:50. Further, rising price of raw materials like HDPE, nylon and polyester
continue to hamper the manufacturers.
What could be the next striking thing can be seen in this segment?
in near future the customers may come across a 5% price hike across the range
in luggage bags. The demand is expected to surge due to summer and soaring
raw material prices are also taking a toll.
The modem organized retail segment has shown signs of recovery. The face of
expansion has improved with opening of new departmental stores and
hypermarkets. The store level profitability has been the focus of the players in
this segment. From a consumer point of
view, hypermarkets and departmental stores are becoming more and more
important for luggage purchase. There is an increased focus from hypermarkets
and departmental stores towards Private labels and in-store brands.
While soft luggage segment continues to grow faster than hard luggage, there
are signs of revival in hard luggage category. This is mainly due to multiple
successful launches in premium, light weight and stylish ranges in
polycarbonate etc. Within soft luggage segment, business satchels and
backpacks are the fastest growing segments, driven by the increasing
penetration of laptop usage in professional office use.

their requirements at competitive advantage.

service, cost and technology with total team development.

To ensure due care regarding product quality' and minimize potential

risks to employee.

CUSTOMER CENTRIC APPROACH

In their 17 years of experience Maria Industries have designed the bags based
on the customer need, they have made many changes in the design of the bags
according to the customers choice. Sometimes the bag has to be less weighted,
small and more padded for carrying laptops, and some bags need to be heavy
depending on the load for eg. In jewellery shops to transfer gold. They are of the
opinion that the customer is the king, who makes or breaks an organization.
Abiding by this policy, there workers work in proximity with customers and
understand their needs and requirements. They then design the products based
on these specifications to completely satisfy the customers.
Feedback and suggestions from their end are extremely valuable, as they act as
guidelines for the company to improve on its products and process. In todays
world of intense competition and rapid dynamism, most of the companies
worldwide are turning their focuses on the customer. Suddenly the customer had
succeeded in capturing all the attention of the companies towards him, so much
so, that the once famous maxim, customer is the god has become so true and
relevant today. There has been a paradigm shift in the thinking of these
companies and none other than the customer has brought this about.

Earlier there was a sellers market, since goods and services were in short
supply and the sellers use to call the shots. But, ever since the advent of the era
of globalization, there has been total transformation in the way the customers
being perceived. Today, marketers are directing their efforts in retaining the
customers and customers base. Their focus has shifted towards integrating the
three elements people, service and marketing.
The customers importance has assumed imponderable proportions in todays
world, because of the inherent value that the customers command. A customers
can make or break a company It is the responsibility of every company to see
that all its customers are equally satisfied with them, for one single dissatisfied
customer will tell at least nine others about the dissatisfaction and will spark off
a chain reaction and spell down for that company. In such scenario, retention of
the existing customers assumes diabolical proportion. Research has thrown
acquring new customers can cost five times more than the cost involved in
satisfying and retaining current customers.
In the past, the customers was taken for a ride, as there were not many players
in the fields, not much importance was attached to product safety, quality,
service and product appeal. The attitude of the manufacture was that of caveat
- emptor. Thanks to the government policies on Liberalization, Privatization
and Globalization (LPG), the market scenario has changed today. Today, the
customer has a host of defense mechanism like the customers protection laws,
regulation of the government, the powerful hands of the organization, customers
courts, switching to substitute or competitors that offer at competitive prices etc.
In the past, after sales service was consider as a cost center. Companies were
lethargic in attending to customers complaints. Availability of trainee service
personal and quality genuine spare parts posed serious problems. However, with
the rising competition, there could not be much product differentiation, as price
and quality were comparable and latest technology was to each and every
company in the field. Since, there could not be much differential a tangible

assets, the companies concentrated on the intangible assets, namely the

service factor, which served as a major differentiator. Today after sales service is
an important aspect of every company, and it is no more considered as a cost
center, but considered as a profit center. Every organisation strives hard to retain
its existing customers at any cost since it is five times costly to get a new
customer, then to retain an existing customer. Most of the industries today use
information technology to offer services to their customers.

ORGANISATION STRUCTURE
The organization chart is a diagram showing graphically the relation of
one official to another, or others, of a company. It is also used to show the
relation of one department to another, or others, or of one function of an
organization to another, or others. This chart is valuable in that it enables one to
visualize a complete organization , by means of the picture it presents.
A companys organizational chart typically illustrates relations between
people within an organization. Such relations might include managers to
sub-workers , directors to managing directors, chief executive officer to
various departments, and so forth. When an organisation chart grows too
large it can be split into smaller charts for separate departments within
the organization. The different types of organization charts include:
Hierarchical
Matrix
flat
there is no accepted form for making organization charts other than putting
the principal official, department or function first, or at the head of the sheet ,
and the others below, in the order of their rank. The titles of officials and

sometimes their names are enclosed in boxes or circles. Lines are generally
drawn from one box or circle to another to show the relation of one official or
department to the others.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Production is the functional area responsible for turning inputs into finished
outputs through a series of production process. The Production Manager is
responsible for making sure that raw materials are provided and made into
finished goods effectively. He or she must make sure that work is carried out
smoothly, and must supervise producers for making work more efficient and
more enjoyable.
FIVE PRODUCTION SUB FUNCTIONS
In a manufacturing company the production function may be split into five subfunctions.
1. The production and planning department will set standards and targets for
each section of the production process. The quantity and quality of products
coming off a production line will be closely monitored. In business focusing on
lean production, quality will be monitored by all employees at every stage of
production, rather than at the end as is the case for business using a quality
control approach.

2. The purchasing department will be responsible for providing the materials,

components and equipment required to keep the production process running
smoothly. A vital aspect of this role is ensuring stocks arrive on time and to the
right quality
3. The stores department will be responsible for stocking all the necessary tools,
spares, raw materials and equipment required to service the manufacturing
process. Where sourcing is unreliable, buffer stocks will need to be kept and the
use of computerized stock control systems helps keep stocks at a minimal but
necessary level for production to continue unhindered.
4. The design and technical support departrment will be responsible for
researching new products or modifications to existing ones, estimating costs for
producing in different quantities and by using different methods. It will also be
responsible for the design and testing of new product process and product types,
together with the development of prototypes through to the final product. The
technical support department may also be responsible for work study and
suggestions as to how working practices can be improved.
5. The works department will be concmed with the manufacture of products.
This will include the maintenance of the pi education line and other necessary
repairs. The works department may also have responsibility for quality control
and inspection.

A key aspect of modem production is ensuring quality. The term quality means
fitness for purpose ie. a product, process or service should do exactly what is
expected of it. Every employee is expected to take responsibility for managing
quality issues in order to make sure that waste is minimized and quality
maximized. For business to be competitive, production and marketing need to
work in an integrated way. Marketing is concerned with knowing and
understanding the requirements of customers, so that production can provide the
market led products that are required. This also requires excellent
communication systems to be in place.
PRODUCTION PROCESS
The raw materials for the manufacturing of a bag are Nylon, Rexin
and backpack mainly. These raw materials are ordered according to the
requirement of the manufacture the threads for stitching are also ordered
according to the requirements
DRAWING
Drawing the design into the material used for bag is the next step in
the manufacturing process. The designs are done according to the trends that are
prevailing in the market Designing skill is very' important in the bag
manufacturing scenario because the trends have to be acceptance to the new
generation. Designing is done according to some of the clients demands. The
drawing is done for each part that has to be stitched to make the bag. The

drawing is done in an effective way so that the raw materials can be utilized at
the maximum.
CUTTING
Cutting is the next process that has to take place. The cutting is done
with accuracy so that the loss in raw matenals can be reduced. Each section is
cut either using machines. Each part in the bag is cut in a continuous process.
The parts are kept in groups for the easy access for the
sewers.
STITCHING
Stichting is one of the important process. Here the accuracy in
stitching has to be there so that there will be high quality in the bag that is
manufactured. Each of the bags parts are taken part by part and stitched
together. There will be several stitchers who will be stitching each part for
making the bag. The stitchers have to use high quality threads for stitching.
Imported heavy duty sewing machines are used for the stitching process.
CHECKING AND FINISHING
Checking is the next stage where the bags are checked for the
manufacturing process. Each bag will be checked before it is being given to the
next process section. The bags will be given finishing touches by fitting the
runners onto the zippers and cutting the threads that have come during the
stitching process. The bags will be checked for the quality that is required for

that segment of that product. The price and warranty labels will be attached in
this stage.
PACKING
Packing is the final stage in the manufacturing process. Each bag will
be packed for removing the chances of damage during the transportation
process. The packed bags are stored according to their specifications.

DEVELOPMENT OF MARKETING GOALS AND STRATEGY

One of the most important functions of marketing department is to design a set
of written goals, objectives and strategies for marketing activities of the
organisation. This means establishing rules and business concept of how the
organisation will conduct itself on the market, what marketing instruments will
be used, what goals will be set and what strategies should be applied to attaining
effective advertising campaigns. The marketing department develops a marketbased business strategy that provides unique value to the customers on all
services and products of the organisation.
Marketing strategy is a method of focusing an organisations energies and
resources on a course of action which can lead to increased sales and dominance
of a targeted market niche. A marketing strategy combines product
development, promotion, distribution, pricing relationship management and
other elements, identifies the firms marketing goals, an explains how they will
be achieved, ideally within a stead timeframe. Marketing strategy determines

the choice of target market segments, positioning, marketing mix and allocation
of resources.
MARKETING MIX
A marketing mix is the division of groups to make a particular product, by
pricing, product, branding, place and quality. Although some marketers have
added other ps such as Personnel and Packaging, the fundamental of marketing
typically identifies the four Ps of the
marketing mix as referring to.

Product
Price
Promotion
Place

PRODUCT : Product refers to a physical product or a service or an idea which a

consumer needs and for which he is ready to pay. Physical products include
tangible goods like grocery items, garments etc. Services are intangible products
which are offered and purchased by consumers. Product is the key element of
any marketing mix.
The decisions concerning product may relate to

Product attributes

Branding

Packaging and labeling

Product support service

Product mix

PRICE : Price is the amount charged for a product or service. It is the

consideration paid by consumers for the benefit of using any product or service.
Price fixation is an important aspect of marketing. Pricing not only includes the
list price, but also discounts, financing and other options
such as leasing
PLACE : Place decisions are those associated with channels of distribution that
serve as the means for getting the product to the target customers. The
distribution system performs transactional, logistical, and facilitating functions.
Distribution decisions include market coverage, channel member selection,
logistics and levels of service.
PROMOTION : Promotion decisions are those related to communicating and
selling to potential consumers. Since these costs can be large in proportion to
the product price, a break even analysis should be performed when making
promotion decisions. It is useful to know the value of a customer inorder to
determine whether additional customers are worth the cost of acquiring them.
Promotion decisions involve advertising, public relations, media types etc.
CONDUCTING

MARKETING

RESEARCH

AND

MONITORING

CUSTOMER NEEDS
The marketing research provides the facts and directions that the managers can
use to make their important decisions for marketing and competitive activities.

Monitoring the customer needs can provide better knowledge of the products
that are required in the market

Finding new customers is the key challenge for every' business. Through
creative advertising and promotion a business can attract new customers and
gain more revenue. The marketing department is responsible for providing
product or service advertising and promotion The function of advertising and
promotion is especially important when the organisation launches a new brand
and it should be promoted by informing the customers of the brand's features
and advantages.

SWOT ANALYSIS

A scan of the internal and external environment is an important part of the

strategic planning process. Environmental factors internal to the firm usually
can be classified as strength or weakness and those external to the firm can be
classified as opportunities or threats. Such an analysis of the strategic
environment can be referred to as SWOT Analysis. The SWOT analysis
provides information that is helpful in matching the firms resources and
capabilities to the competitive environment in which it operates. A firms
strengths are its resources and capabilities that can be used as a basis for
developing a competitive advantage. The absence of certain strength may be
viewed as weakness. The external environment analysis may reveal certain new

CHAPTER IX
FINDINGS, SUGGESTIONS AND
CONCLUSION

FINDINGS
An organisational study at MARIA INDUSTRIES Pvt Ltd, during the MBA
course of MG University has really enabled me to understand the organisational
structure of die corporate world to an extent, the ways and means how it
function; Maria Industries is one of the leading company in the manufacturing
of trolley bags, school bags, ladies bags etc. It was found during the study that it
is indeed a healthy organisation with a lot of uniqur functions. There is a well
established organisational structure with the top level management, the middle
level management and the bottom level.
Being a small industry, the department is so well differentiated and managed by
different managers, although there are many departments it is functioning very
well and active.
Maria Industries has introduced good labour welfare facilities which care the
needs of workers and consequently increases 4he love and affiliation of the
workers towards the organisation, the company has well established and
functioning transportation facilities. ESI schemes, PF scheme for the workers
which increase their productivity and over all profit of the company.

The production department is well furnished with all the necessary requirements
and there is well functioning tool rooms which care to the needs of the
production function, there is also effective waste management and scrap
management functions carried out to the utmost profit of the company.
There is a well maintained attendence register and the workers are aware of the
importance of efficient work. There is formal and official way of absenting from
work even for an hour, which help their employers to have their leave.
Another important factor is the Maria Industries has clearly understood the need
of changing according to the time and the need of effective productivity, there is
the total quality management at work and check the quality.
The production department joining hands with the top level management makes
it possible to enforce the required changes for the purpose of improved and
efficient production, reduction of cost and increased customer and employee
satisfaction.
in the company's system of materials management, there are very less chances
of damaged goods and scrap items being raised. The company takes necessary
steps to see that no items become scrap in the store and damaged goods doesnt
come in and go out of the company, still there are chances of damaged goods
coming in both raw materials and in finished goods mostly because of
transportation defect from agents.
The relationship between an employer and its employees is an important factor
in the companys success. One of the strengths of Maria Industries is the strong
employee - employer relationship. Employers will treat their employees with
respect and vice versa if they all want to succeed and achieve goals.
SUGGESTIONS

To keep and improve the relation with the employees I have proposed some
suggestions to the management. They are;
Motivate employees by giving them incentives within the
workplace. Treat all the employees equally and give them all
the chances to win a free trip, a free dinner or tickets to the
next theatre. Reward to the employees for their improved
hardworks.
Spend time with your employees. Many bosses and owners
forget the little people that make it all happen. Sit down and
talk with each one of your employees when you have time and
ask if they are happy with their jobs and what improvements
they think the company should make.
Plan a team building event and ask all your employees to
attend including upper, middle and lower level management.
Get everyone together as a team and allow them to undergo
various team building and trust creating activities.
Ask your managers to work closely with their teams and to
support any issues that come up, or mistakes that might occur.
Get everyone working together on finding a solution that
everyone agrees on. If you have to, create a problem and ask
everyone to work on it to find the answer
CONCLUSION
Maria

Industries

has

diversified

product

range.

They

manufactures a!! types of bags from school bags to college

bags, Executive bags, Ladies bags, Travel bags, Trolleys,
Suitcase etc. Campus Birds are a prestigious collection of
college bags from Marvel Bags. They have 30% of market share

in luggage market. The important thing to be noted here is

that, it is being achieved without much marketing activities.
One of the weaknesses of the company has is the low brand
awareness. Because of the financial constraints of the company
is not able to spend much on the marketing activities. That is
why they are not able to brand their product.
Prevailing promotional activities: .
3. Used

to

give

advertisements

in

Malayala

Manorama

newspaper
4.

They are giving school bags at a discount to the world

vision charitable trust.

5.

They are making bags for engineering colleges and B schools also.

If the company is able to bring these aspects in front of the

public, it will surely help them in building the brand.
Another important fact found during the SWOT Analysis was the
limited area. This could be overcome by the company by a new
expansion (new unit).
From the market trends, we can see that the consumers have
started consolidating their luggage requirements: hence from
purchasing multiple bags for different occasions, they are now
using similar bags for different occasions. The global economic
scenario has led to the consumers moving to value segment
and their expectations in terms of style, aesthetics and
functionality have reduced marginally.
The company's market is mainly from Ankamali to Trivandrum
only. They can go for the whole Kerala and nearby parts of
South India. The sales of school bags and college bags will be

more in the months of April, May and June as it's the time of
school and college opening. In all the other months the
company can concentrate more on the growing office and hard
luggage sections.
