5Es Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Teaching The Village Street


Description of Lesson: This lesson will introduce a poem entitled "The Village Street" by
Edgar Allan Poe. At the end of this lesson, the
students will be able to unlock their
vocabulary by giving meaning to some unfamiliar words
found in the poem: to reflect as they
convey the message in the poem and
to perform a poetry in motion by themselves.
Target Learners: Grade 10
Duration: 60 minutes
ENGAGEMENT
Pre- reading strategy: Vocabulary Enrichment
1. The students will be engaged in an activity entitled "Pick a word, what does it means?"
Instructional Materials: printed copy of sentences, projector, power point presentation, timer
Procedures:
a. The students will be grouped by 5 members each.
b. Each group will be pick 5 words. They need to choose the correct meaning of the
words in the choices.
c. The choices were projected on the screen.
d. The students should write the correct letter in a sheet of paper.
e. All groups will be given 10 minutes to complete the activity.
f. The group with the most number of correct answers will be declared as the winners.
g. In case of tie, the group with the shortest time to finish will be declared winners.
EXPLORATION
During reading strategy: Silent Reading
1. The teacher will distribute the printed copy of the poem.
2. The students will read the poem silently for 10 minutes.
3. While reading, the students will be tasked to select one stanza in the poem that they
like the most.
Instructional Materials: printed copy of the poem

EXPLANATION
Post - reading strategy: Discussion

1. The teacher will discuss the brief background of the author of the poem so that
student can understand the context behind the poem they have read.
Instructional materials: projector, powerpoint presentation
ELABORATION
Post- reading strategy: Discussion
1. The teacher will give the students a worksheet for the activity.
2. The teacher will give 10 minutes to the students to write the stanza that they have
selected during the silent reading activity.
3. The teacher then will discuss the summary of the poem and the message of the poem.
4. The students will be asked to share their feelings and insights after reading the poem.

1. The students will be tasked to memorize two stanza each, of the poem "The
Village Street " by Edgar Allan Poe for the individual poetry presentation next
meeting.
