Getting Started with the VisSim Free Academic Program

Thank you for enrolling in the VisSim Free Academic Program (FAP). This program provides professors
and students at accredited universities access to VisSim, for nonlinear system modeling and simulation.
The FAP CD contains program files, accompanying documentation, movies, case studies, and tutorials.
Please take a few minutes to view the organization of the files on the CD; then follow the procedures
below to access the files you want to use.
To distribute VisSim FAP to eligible students or colleagues, follow the procedures in Section 3.

Section 1
Follow these directions if you are the recipient of the VisSim FAP CD.
To install the VisSim FAP directly from the CD
A master installation program, FAPSETUP.EXE, on the FAP CD automatically starts up when you insert
the FAP CD in the CD drive. This installation program allows you to automatically and selectively install
VisSim FAP components to your hard drive under the VISSIM_FAP30 directory. The components you can
install on your hard drive include:

VisSim

Movie Player and Movies

User's guides

Tutorials

Case studies

Data sheets

We recommend you install all the components from the CD. Once installed, you can run VisSim, play a
movie, or print literature. These procedures are described in Section 2.

Section 2
This section describes how to use the VisSim FAP software after you have installed it on your hard drive.
To run VisSim
1.

Choose Start > Programs > VisSim FAP - VisSim 3.0.

2.

For information on using VisSim, refer to the online Help or print a copy of the VisSim User's Guide,
as described below.

To watch a movie
1.

Choose Start > Programs > VisSim FAP - Movies.

2.

Click on the movie that you want to watch.

To print literature
The DOC directory contains user's guides for the VisSim product line. The TUTORIAL directory contains
tutorials that step you through the process of solving real-world engineering problems in various
disciplines. The CASESTDS directory contains short overviews of VisSim in use at different companies.
And the DATASHTS directory contains data sheets for the VisSim product line.
Each of these folders also has a DISKS subdirectory that contains an installation program that installs the
appropriate files on your computer.
All product literature files are in Adobe Acrobat 4.0 (.PDF) file format.

Do the following:

To print a user's guide, go to the DOC directory, and choose the appropriate subdirectory.

To print a tutorial, go to the TUTORIAL directory.

To print a data sheet, go to the DATASHTS directory.

To print a case study, go to the CASESTDS directory.

1.

Start Acrobat Reader and open the appropriate .PDF file. (User's guide and case study PDF files are
described below. Data sheet and tutorial PDF file names are self-explanatory.)

2.

Choose File > Print.

Section 3
You may also want to distribute the contents of the FAP CD to eligible students or colleagues. This section
describes how to copy components to floppy disk.
NOTE: When you distribute the floppies, be sure to include a copy of this file (README.TXT or
README.DOC) so the recipients will have directions for installing the software, running the movie
player, and printing the literature.
To copy VisSim to floppy disks
You will need three blank, formatted disks to complete this operation.
1.

2.

Copy each of the following files to separate floppy disks:

VISSIM_30\INSTALL.EXE

VISSIM_30\INSTALL.W02

VISSIM_30\INSTALL.W03

Label each disk with the file contained on the disk.

To copy other components to floppy disks

1.

Go to the appropriate DISKS subdirectory in that components directory.

2.

Copy each individual file to a separate floppy disk.

3.

Label each disk with the file contained on the disk.

Section 4
This section describes how to install and copy the VisSim FAP from floppy disks. After you have installed
the components on your hard drive, follow the procedures in Section 2 to start VisSim, watch a movie, or
print literature.
To install VisSim from floppy disks
1.

Insert the disk labeled INSTALL.EXE into your floppy drive.

2.

Choose Start > Run.

3.

In the Text box, enter A:\INSTALL.EXE and click on the OK button, or press ENTER.

4.

Follow the online installation directions.

5.

For information on using VisSim, refer to the online Help or print a copy of the VisSim User's Guide.
