University study program of Computer Engineering

Study of Computer Engineering

1. Description of degree programs in Computer Engineering
In undergraduate program of Computer Engineering students will train for application of acquired
knowledge in solving specific problems of designing hardware and software products. This includes
the ability to clearly define the problem, determine the feasibility of its solution, and the study,
specifying, designing, implementation, testing, transformation and documenting solution.
Undergraduate program qualifies students for teamwork to solve problems and to communicate with
experts from other areas. It is especially important that they are able to permanently improve in this
area that is developing very quickly and fits into new application areas. Undergraduate studies of
Computer Engineering were designed with the aim to provide students with education, especially
relying on Electronics as a primary computing technology. In addition to basic knowledge of
mathematics, physics and electrical engineering students of Computer Engineering also acquire
knowledge from following areas: Algorithms and data structures, discrete mathematics, analysis and
design of digital systems, micro and micro programmable function blocks, the realization of hardware's
algorithms, connecting computers to the outside world (WWW), different types of databases, man machine interface, programming, software systems for computer aided design and other areas of
computer science. While in undergraduate studies of Computer Engineering, students are trained to
work in different areas of computer science and information technologies. Upon completion of their
studies, students are trained to design, implement and maintain medium complex computer systems
which include the integration of software and hardware solutions. Especially important role in this
study program is relation to the labor market as the first stage in the framework of a two-stage
education in order to form a complete knowledgeable expert capable of solving the most complicated
engineering tasks. The need for professionals with these competencies is significantly higher than the
number of educated professionals, both in the wider area, and in all Bosnia and Herzegovina, and
abroad. After graduation, with the acquired knowledge students can be employed in industry, computer
and communication companies, education, and service activities, etc.
Graduate study of Computer Engineering
Graduate studies of Computer Engineering give students the necessary knowledge in the next fields:
design and development of software and hardware and systems based on a computer, interactions
between hardware and software, designing systems that support human interaction with computer
system, and computer system and external world, methods and procedures for the design of systems
that contain a computer. The learning process has the scientific, mathematical and practical
dimensions, and integrates them in a separate study program. Understanding this integration
transcends implementation details of the components and seeks recognition of predictable effects on
complex systems. This study program includes a combination of key skills and techniques of computer
science aimed at understanding the problem needed to solve complex software and softwarehardware problems in the industry and all branches of human activity. In graduate study of Computer
Engineering students are trained to work in all branches of industrial activity that require excellent
knowledge of programming with understanding of computing, telecommunications, built-in and other
systems that contain computer. Student is qualified to independently solve complex programming
problems and to plan and design systems based on computer. Student is also capable of operating in
the development and implementation of software products (industry, government FSR Mostar Undergraduate and graduate study of Computer Engineering, institutions, banks), innovations in
computer technology, and new and effective solutions for computer problems (research and
development departments in the industry, science, Higher Education). There is almost no sector of
industry where expert who finished a graduate study in computer engineering would not be able to
successfully work, so the needs of the labor market for this profile of professionals is very high. This is
particularly important at the present time, when social and economic changes require the development
of new, small or medium-sized, high-technology enterprises, which will be the new backbone of
economic development.

2. The goal of the study of Computer Engineering

The goal of the study of Computer Engineering (undergraduate and graduate) is to educate
professionals capable to adapt to the constant changes in the field of computing and all engineering
fields. Education includes providing the necessary basis in computing and engineering in general. The
goal of the study is to develop the ability of designing the application and utilization of computer
science and information technologies, with particular emphasis on applications in the engineering.
3. Description of the Profession
The goals of the opening study of Computer Engineering are best demonstrated through activities
peculiarity of experts in the field of Computer Engineering. Experts in the field of Computer
Engineering must be active in the most advanced and most widespread fields of today's technologydependent world. The fact is, on the one hand that the needs of mankind for energy and material
goods is growing, on the other hand it is increasingly difficult to meet the need for more rational use of
natural resources and environmental protection. In such conditions, the activity of experts in the field of
Computer Engineering is complicated and requires as qualitative education. Also the fact that the
technological systems of today, all sectors of the economy and social activity without exception,
cannot be imagined without the aid of Computer Engineering. Technological solutions in these areas
act immediately to improve the overall quality of life and the life of every individual. From future
professionals in the field of Computer Engineering, regardless of work field (research, development,
planning, production, use, sale, etc.) is expected:
Permanent adoption of new knowledge and understanding, maintaining technological competence;
Connection with the areas of application, ability to adapt;
working enthusiasm and taking initiatives;
Sense of professional responsibility (decision-making at all levels of responsibility and appreciation
of humanistic, economic and legal rules);
Communication skills, work in multidisciplinary groups.
Educational plan and program of undergraduate and graduate study programs is designed to enable
students to acquire the basic knowledge necessary to meet the above expectations.

4. Professional titles and academic degrees

FSR Mostar Undergraduate and graduate study of Computer Engineering

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering, of University in Mostar organizes and
conducts educational, scientific and highly professional work in the educational and scientific field of
raunarstva (Computer Engineering). After finishing undergraduate studies, students acquire
diploma and title: baccalaurus /baccalaurea raunarstva (Computer Engineering). ). After
finishing graduate studies of Computer Engineering students acquire diploma and title:
magistar/magistra raunarstva (Computer Engineering) .
5. Structure and duration of studies
Classes at the universitys undergraduate study of Computer Engineering is done in six semesters,
and in the last semester, students need to do their final thesis. At the graduate level of Computer
Engineering classes are held for two years (four semesters), and in the final year student need to do
Bologna master thesis.
Classes in both studies are carried out through:
Obligatory courses;
Elective courses;
Seminars;
Final thesis (undergraduate study of Computer Engineering),
Bologna master thesis (graduate study of Computer Engineering).
By education plan and program are determined mandatory and elective courses, and the order of their
performance. Undergraduate study is completed by submission and thesis defense, and graduate
study is completed by submission and defending a master's thesis in front of an expert committee.
6. Entry requirements to next year of study
The conditions for enrollment to higher years of study are made by the Faculty Council with the
consent of the Senate, University of Mostar, in accordance with the valid normative acts. Entry
requirements to the higher years of study are timely advertised on the notice board and website of the
Faculty. In order to further awareness of students, teachers, and bearing in mind the criteria of entry
into the higher years at the University of Mostar, there were determined following conditions of entry:
Undergraduate study of Computer Engineering
For application to the entry to second academic year, students must achieve at least 45 ECTS
credits from the first year;
at enrollment of the third academic year, students must achieve at least 95 ECTS credits and they
need to have 60 ECTS credits from the first year of study and 35 ECTS credits from the second year
of study.
Graduate study of Computer Engineering
the graduate study of Computer Engineering can be enrolled by students who have successfully
completed the undergraduate program and achieved 180 ECTS credits.
when enrolling second year of graduate study of Computer Engineering students must achieve at
least 45 ECTS credits from the first year.
7. Education plan and program for undergraduate study of Computer Engineering
Education plan and program of undergraduate study of Computer Engineering is described in detail in
tables containing the names of the course, L + E (number of hours of lectures, auditory and laboratory
exercises), information about exams and ECTS credits. All courses are carried out for an entire
semester, fifteen weeks, so that the total number of classes is determined by previous data. ECTS
system (European Credit Transfer System), which is incorporated in educational plan and program of
studies of Computer Engineering, will enable the mobility of students and teachers, and also
translatability of academic degrees and qualifications achieved during education.
