Experience and Achievements


 In my independent business consulting role I have successfully supported organisations through all stages of
the business lifecycle from strategy and planning, through capability development and implementation, to
performance monitoring and evaluation.
 In my business development and consulting role with Thēbics (through APT Consulting) I was responsible for
introducing over $1M of new business per year. I was instrumental in establishing Thēbics’ “health industry”
consulting practice, and also introduced more robust processes and collateral in all areas of the sales
pipeline, from marketing through to account management.
 At Practiv I moved from a position of consultancy and programme management to General Management of
the NZ business. As GM, I oversaw growth in productive output (chargeable hours) of over 35%.
 At Practiv I implemented dependable and scaleable processes for key areas such as recruitment, staff
performance management and status reporting. The success of these processes was proven during the
organisation’s rapid expansion as we took on over 24 new staff in a 2 year period.
 I have accumulated nearly two decades of experience in all stages of the service provider lifecycle, from
marketing and customer acquisition, through development, to service delivery, implementation and support.

Detailed Career History

2006–present: Director and Business Consultant, APT Consulting Ltd.


I established APT Consulting to deliver independent consulting advice and services to clients in a variety of
business areas including: business strategy and planning, marketing and sales management, brand development,
service management and business change management.

May 2006 - present: Manager Consultancy Services, Thēbics Consulting Limited


Thēbics is a small independently-owned consulting business specialising in the provision of project management,
information management and change management services. I have worked extensively with Thēbics, providing
sales, account management and consultancy management capability in order to grow its New Zealand client
base. As well as acquiring new business and developing existing accounts, I was also closely involved in the
formation of business and marketing strategy with Thēbics’ two director-owners.
 Responsible for business acquisition, account management and assignment management. Also involved in
the development of marketing strategy and business growth plans.
 Developed key relationships within the major health organisations in the Auckland region, leading to the
formation of Thēbics’ health industry consulting practice.
 Achieved consulting sales in excess of $1,000,000 p.a.
 Managed the delivery of over 30 consulting assignments with 100% customer satisfaction and feedback.
 Identified – and implemented - improvements in brand development, marketing and sales management,
leading to the formation of a separate branded entity for the delivery of contracting services.

May 2006 - present: Independent Consultant


In addition to my role at Thēbics, I also carried out the following consulting assignments:
 Business strategy development for a business unit within a major health organisation, including business
objectives, high level processes for all business activities, structure and competencies, and relationships to
third parties.
 New business and brand development strategy for software development start-up.
 Facilitated strategy development workshops to clients undergoing business planning and capability
transformation exercises.
 Independent programme QA and IS consulting for a major Auckland law firm.
 Operational management (executive lease) for a team of project managers and business analysts in a major
health organisation.

2002–2006: Practiv (NZ) Ltd.


I joined Practiv (NZ) to provide sales, account management and consultancy capability for its local clients.
Subsequently the organisation withdrew from the local market to focus on growing its UK customer base, and I
was asked to lead the NZ development office.

Jul.2004 – Apr.2006: General Manager


 Responsible for business planning, policy and process development, internal and external marketing and
account management.
 Grew NZ developer headcount by over 50% in less than 2 years.
 Identified areas where the existing business was not sufficiently robust and /or scaleable, including
recruitment, performance management and reporting, and developed appropriate processes.
 Managed contracts and relationships with key service providers, such as recruitment agencies, utilities,
building operators and system suppliers.
 Achieved revenue and margin targets against a background of rapid growth and severe cash flow constraints.

Oct.2003 – Jul.2004: Co-development Manager


 Responsible for re-positioning the NZ development capability as a core part of the Practiv customer
proposition, and for co-development process analysis and improvement.
 Identified key weaknesses in existing co-development engagement and delivery processes. Investigated and
recommended appropriate standards and tools to address these.
 Raised awareness and importance of NZ development capability in UK-based sales team, and established
strong relationships to enable the continued promotion of this key aspect of Practiv’s proposition.

Aug.2002 – Oct.2003: Consultant


 Provided pre-sales support to local new-name sales force.
 Provided consultancy to local clients and the programme management of all NZ fee-earning activities.

1998-2002: Independent IS Consultant, Auckland, New Zealand


My wife and I obtained Permanent Residency and moved to New Zealand in December 1997. After a period of
travel, we settled in Auckland and established a partnership providing IS consultancy services.

Apr.2002 – Aug.2002: Senior Business Analyst, Royal and SunAlliance (now Vero)
 Responsible for gathering all business requirements relating to policy sales and quotation system, and
managing the implementation of the required changes.
 Led team of 4 BAs working on the detailed functional specification of all system enhancements.

Apr.1999 – Jan.2002: Strategic Business Process Analyst, Southern Cross Healthcare


 Responsible for strategic business and process analysis in many areas, working with the operational managers
and senior management team to define problems and identify solutions. Areas covered included the
organisational business model, pricing strategy, and transaction processing.
 Defined the content and structure of the deliverables for high-level business process design for all parts of
the health insurance business. Team-led the analysts and subject matter experts in the production of these
deliverables with particular responsibility for ensuring consistency between all business process areas.
 Led the team responsible for the definition and documentation of detailed business processes for
implementation of the Siebel customer relationship management system within the sales area.

Jul.1998 – Dec.1998: Lead Business Analyst, Air New Zealand Cargo


 Responsible for planning the project to implement a new cargo revenue accounting system.
 Prepared strategy and plan for analysis and documentation of “to be” business processes. Defined business
process specification template and trained other analysis team members.
 Prepared acceptance test strategy and high-level test plan.
 Provided advice and input to risk management, team structuring and recruitment, implementation planning,
business case presentation and progress monitoring.

Apr.1998 – Jul.1998: Business Analyst, Department of Corrections


 Analysed IS requirements arising from business process changes and advised the business team on the IS
implications of particular courses of action.
 Worked closely with the team implementing a new Integrated Offender Management System with a view to
increasing the synergy between IS-led and business-led projects.
 Investigated technical options and costs of IS-based solutions for “kiosk-style” information services.

Joined as Business Analyst, specialising in requirements and data analysis. Work undertaken included pre-sales
analysis and support; programme management; procurement; business and systems analysis; data migration
analysis; implementation of corporate data and development standards; project management and the training
and mentoring of junior staff. Promoted to Project Leader.

Jun.1997 – Oct.1997: Business Analyst / Team Leader, Legal & General Healthcare
 Identified areas of weakness in existing system and specified changes required to data structures to enhance
system performance and provide future flexibility.
 Planned programme of developments to upgrade the data structure and provide required functionality
