C&I Protection Checking of Boiler & Main Turbine

1.0

INTRODUCTION
Corporate Operation Services has made action plan with individual sites to
achieve zero forced outage. The action plan includes various checks and activities
to be carried out during overhaul. One important activity when the unit comes
back after overhaul or after a major shutdown is checking of protections. Though
this activity is being carried out as a routine, it is felt that protection checking
should be carried out with the involvement of Operation, Maintenance and Field
quality departments and each protection check is done with a well documented
procedure which includes checking healthiness of protection related field devices,
calibration, protection of field devices from dust and water ingress, healthiness of
cable, tightness of termination, working of indicators and recorders in UCB,
power supply, availability of alarm system and printers.
In order to cover all these aspects in protection checking of equipment, Corporate
OS-C&I has prepared a procedure for documenting protection checking of boiler
and main turbine. The following pages contain the suggested format in which
protection checking is to be documented. It is expected that the sites would
prepare such procedures in the given format for protection checking of all
equipments taking into account site specific conditions but encompassing all areas
mentioned above like field conditions, alarm etc. A word of caution: The
enclosed protection checking procedure has been prepared for protection common
to most of the boilers and turbines and in no way replaces station specific
protections nor is a suggestion to include new protections. If the present station
practice is an improvement over the suggested practice in the document, the same
may be continued and Corporate OS be informed. It is once again emphasized
that a holistic approach to protection checking is the idea built into the procedure.
