1. B. megaterium: Large, smooth, soft, glistening, round, convex,

entire, non-spreading, dense, creamy white to yellow. Variations:
Rough, concentrically or radially ridged, thin edged.
2. B.cereus: Large, rough, flat, irregular with whip-like outgrowths.
Whitish with characteristic mottled appearance by transmitted light
(resembling galvanized iron or moire silk). Variations: Thin and
spreading, rough and arboresce,nt, smooth and dense. Grayish,
thin, widely spreading by means of long, twisted chains of cells,
turning to the left or right (sinistral or dextral). The sinistral form
occurs more often in soil
3. B. anthracis: Large, dense, irregular, composed of parallel chains of
cells giving a curled or combed appearance; similar to certain
strains of Bacillus cereus.
4. B. thuringiensis: sama kayak Bacillus cereus
5. B. licheniformis: Large, spreading; surface rough or rugose; hairy
outgrowths. Offwhite. Variations: Smooth, entire or lobate
6. B. subtilis: Rough, opaque, dull, spreading, offwhite. Variations:
Smooth to slimy, soft, thin, translucent, dendroid. Yellow, orange or
brown.
7. B. pumilus: Smooth, thin, flat, spreading, dendroid, translucent.
Variations: Small to pinpoint, nonspreading, dense.
8. B. coagulans: Usually small, round, opaque, not distinctive.
9. B. badius: Large, dense, rough, opaque, with hairy outgrowths,
resemble those of Bacillus cereus.
10.B. firmus: Small, round, smooth, dense, whitish, rarely pink.
11.B. lentus: Small, round, smooth, dense, whitish, not distinctive.
12.B. polymyxa: Usually thin, translucent, spreading, lobate or
fimbriate. Rough stage small, round, whitish, sometimes adherent
13.B. macerans: Thin, transparent to whitish, spreading, irregular.
Rough stage small and compact.
14.B. alvei: Thin, smooth, translucent, quickly spreading as a thin layer
over entire plate. Variation: Round and rather gummy. Giant
colonies: Motile, bullet-shaped, micro-colonies moving in large arcs
from point of inoculation, usually covering the plate in 1 day (agar
plates should stand a couple days in order to dry the surface
somewhat before using).
15.B. stearothermophilus: Not distinctive, pinpoint to small, round to
irregular, translucent to opaque, rough to smooth.
16.B. circulans: Thin, spreading, translucent to transparent, sometimes
barely visible or small to medium in size, opaque, entire. Giant
colonies: Sometimes there are motile micro-colonies which move
from the point of inoculation in a rotating pattern, eventually
covering the entire plate (poured agar plates should be allowed to

stand 2 or 3 days at room temperature in order to dry the surface

somewhat before using).
17.B. laterosporus: Thin, translucent, spreading, irregular. Variations:
Small, round, rough, opaque.
18. B. brevis: Thin, smooth, translucent, quickly spreading over entire
plate. Variations: Small, round, opaque, non-spreading
19.B. panthothenticus: Small, round, translucent to dense, granular to
moire, smooth to rough. Embedded colonies lenticular or irregular
and hairy.
20.B. sphaericus: Thin, smooth, translucent, rapidly spreading over
entire plate. Variations: Small, round or irregular. Giant agar
colonies: Usually motile micro-colonies of various shapes move in
large arcs from the point of inoculation and cover the plate in 1 day
(the surface of poured agar plates should be dried by holding at
room temperature for 2 or 3 days before use)
