Preparing a holiday meal is a big task, but you dont have to do all the work yourself.
Make it a family affair and get your kids involved. Depending how old your kids are, they
can help out in a variety of ways.
Sit down with everyone before the holiday and plan your menu. Find out what foods your
kids want to eat and what new foods they would be willing to try. Use this time to explain
the importance of having a balanced meal that includes meat, vegetables and a variety of
other dishes.
To get ready for your holiday feast, ask your youngsters to help set the dinner table. They
can fold napkins, set out the plates, put ice cubes in the water glasses. They can also
carry plated dishes to the serving area.
If youre kids are old enough to be in the kitchen they can help with the side dishes. Have
them arrange pickles and olives on a platter. They can transfer food from pots into the
serving dishes. If you bake homemade pies, let your kids mix the ingredients and pour
the filling into the pie plate.
For kids that want to be more hands on, get them involved with the prep work. Have them
mash potatoes or chop vegetables for a salad. Just make sure they are being supervised
when they are using sharp knives.
If cooking isnt your childs thing, recruit them to help with clean up. Let them scrape and
rinse dishes before loading the dishwasher or get them to sweep the floor before theyre
allowed to have dessert.
Dont stress about doing all the work yourself this year. Use these tips from Kids.gov to
make cooking your holiday meal more fun by getting the whole family involved.
Help Prepare Your Family's Holiday Dinner
Eating a holiday dinner is fun, but helping get everything ready for the big meal can be a
lot of fun too. Here are a few things you can do to help out.
Plan the menu. Talk with your family about what you want to have for your holiday dinner. Pick a couple side dishes to go with the main course, like vegetables, potatoes and
salad. Then pick something for dessert.
Set the table. While your parents are busy carving the turkey, ham, or roast, offer to set
the table. Fold the napkins and then place the forks on the left side of the plate and the
knives on the right side.
Lend a hand in the kitchen. There are lots of dishes to get ready for a holiday feast, so
ask your parents what you can help with. Maybe you can mash the potatoes or put the
rolls in a serving dish. Make sure to ask your parents if you're not sure about certain
kitchen tools, like knives.
Clean up. Give your parents a break when dinner is over and help with clean up. Sweep
the floor or load the dishwasher so your parents dont have to.
Your parents will be so happy to have your help. After a full day of cooking, eating and
cleaning up, you can all enjoy a slice of pie for dessert.
