Types of Portland Cement

A hydraulic cement is a substance which sets and

hardens by chemical reaction with water and is
capable of doing so under water. It is used as a
binder to hold other materials together.
Cement is classified into:
Portland - a hydraulic cement produced by
pulverizing portland-cement clinker, and usually
containing calcium sulfate
Blended Cement with Pozzolan - a hydraulic
cement consisting of two or more inorganic
constituents (at least one of which is not
portland cement) which seperately or in
combination contribute to the strength-gaining
properties of the cement

Type I - suitable for all uses where special properties

specified for any other type are not required. It
can be used in structures of considerable mass, such
as large piers and heavy retaining walls.
Type II - used when moderate sulfate resistance or
moderate heat of hydration is desired.
Type III - used when high-early strength is desired.
It is used when forms are to be removed as soon as
possible, or when structure must be put into service
quickly.
Type IV - used when a low heat of hydration is
desired. It is intended for use in massive structures
where the temperature rise resulting from heat
generated during curing is a critical factor.
Type V - used when high sulfate resistance is desired.

Types of Blended Hydraulic Cement with Pozzolan

Cement is regulated by the Department of Trade

and Industry (DTI).
Manufacturers and importers should apply for a
Philippine Standard (PS) license and Import
Commodity Clearance (ICC) certificate,
respectively, before the products are distributed
and sold.
The DTI - Bureau of Product Standards (BPS)
acquires a sample of the cement for inspection
and testing based on the Philippine National
Standard (PNS) 07:2005 and PNS 63:2006.

Type P - Portland-pozzolan cement for use when

higher strengths at early ages are not required
Type I (PM) - Pozzolan-modified Portland cement for
use in general concrete construction
Type IP - Portland-pozzolan cement or use in general
concrete construction

Product with the PS or ICC Mark

Only manufacturers and importers whose
products have passed the PNS requirements will
be issued with the PS license and ICC certificate
by the DTI-BPS.
Only manufacturers and importers with valid
licenses and certificates are allowed to use the
PS and ICC marks on their products.
