Q. 01 (a)

The 50-kg homogeneous smooth sphere rests on the 30 o incline A and bears against the smooth
vertical wall B. Calculate the contact forces at A and B.

(b)

The shaft S exerts three force components on the tool T. Find the magnitude and coordinate
direction angles of the resultant force, Force F2 acts within the octant shown.

Q. 02 (a) Find the angle between the forces A and B given as

(b)

Determine the force in each cable needed to support the 3500 lb platform. Set d = 4 ft.

Q. 03 If the man at B exerts a force of P = 30N on his rope, determine the magnitude of the force F the man at C
must exert to prevent the pole from rotating, i.e., so the resultant moment about A of both forces is zero.

(b)

Two forces act on the rod shown in Fig. Determine the resultant moment they create about the
flange at O. Express the result as a Cartesian vector.

Q. 04 In the design of the robot to insert the small cylindrical part into a close-fitting circular hole, the robot arm
must exert a 90-N force P on the part parallel to the axis of the hole as shown. Determine the components of the
force which the part exerts on the robot along axes parallel and perpendicular to the arm BC.

Q. 05 (a)

Determine the equivalent concentrated load(s) and external reactions for the simply supported beam
which is subjected to the distributed load shown.

(b)

The 1.4 Mg drainpipe is held in the tines of the fork lift. Determine the normal forces at A and
B as functions of the blade angle and plot the results of force (vertical axis) versus
(horizontal axis) for 0 90.

Q. 06 (a) Sketch different types of supports with reactions for two dimensions.
(b)

Find the force acting in all members of the truss shown in Figure and indicate whether the
members are in tension or compression.

Q. 07 (a)

Determine the range of values which the mass mo may have so that the 100-kg block shown in the
figure will neither start moving up the plane nor slip down the plane. The coefficient of static friction for the

contact surfaces is 0.30.

(c)
A 61.2 kg cabinet is mounted on casters which can be locked to prevent their rotation. The
coefficient of static friction between the floor and each caster is 0.30. If h = 640 mm, determine
the magnitude of the force P required to move the cabinet to the right (a) if all casters are

locked, (b) if the casters at B are locked and the casters at A are free to rotate, (c) if the casters
at A are locked and the casters at B are free to rotate.
