Sheriff’s Detectives Make Another Arrest for Child Pornography

GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. – At approximately 8:35 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010,
deputies and detectives from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Bruce Shaw,
22, 55 Coryell Ridge Road, Glenwood Springs, for the possession and distribution of child
pornography. He was arrested at his girlfriend’s residence, 1476 ½ Crawford Avenue, Glenwood
Springs, and booked into the Garfield County Jail within the hour.
The investigation began March 6, 2010, when a Park County Sheriff’s Office detective covering
internet crimes against children observed several files being offered from a specific Internet
Protocol (IP) address in Glenwood Springs. From this IP address, the detective downloaded 25
images containing sexually explicit material involving children under the age of 18 years old.
On Thursday, March 25, 2010, Sheriff’s Office detectives from Garfield, Eagle and Park
counties executed a search warrant on the 55 Coryell Ridge Road address for the electronic
distribution of child pornography involving peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. They located three
computers in the residence and narrowed the forensic investigation to one, which, according to
his grandmother, Shaw would use when he occasionally stayed with her.
The investigators recovered at least 50 images from the computer’s hard drive that depicted
children under the age of 18 engaged in, observing or being used for explicit sexual conduct.
Among the images were those previously uncovered in the March 6 investigation.
Though not linked together, Shaw’s arrest is the second this month concerning online child
pornography. The other occurred March 10th and involved Christopher Earl Carlyle, a habitual
sexual offender. Carlyle is being held in the Garfield County Jail pending a 8:15 a.m. hearing on
May 13, 2010.
Michael Bruce Shaw is being held on a $10,000 bond and is to be advised of the charges against
him Monday at 1:30p.m. He is facing one class three felony count of sexual exploitation of a
child – distribution and two class four felony counts of sexual exploitation of a child –
possession.
