Bucilla White 10-inch Crochet Hook, Size 2.

Bucilla Tapestry Needle, Size 17, for Embroidery.
Embroidery Chart 1
Embroidery Chart 2
This Afghan is made of wide and narrow strips, worked in afghan stitch. The pattern is obtained by simple cross-stitch embroidery
worked over the wide crocheted strips.
Gauge: 5 sts=1 inch; 5 rows=1 inch
WIDE STRIP-With tan A, ch 46, draw up a loop through the horizontal bar in the back of 2nd and all succeeding chains, retaining

loops on hook (46 loops on hook). This is half of afghan stitch row. Work off as follows: yarn over and through end loop, * over and
through 2 loops; repeat from * to end. 2nd row: the loop that remains on hook is the first st of this row. Pick up a loop through the
2nd and all succeeding vertical bars to within 1 st of end, insert book through both vertical bars of end st, thus giving a firm edge to
this side of work, retaining all loops on hook; work off as for first row. Repeat 2nd row until there are 330 rows completed from
beginning, when strip should measure 66 inches from beginning; finish with a row of slip stitches, taking up the vertical bars of all
stitches; fasten off. This completes one strip; make 2 more strips in same way.
NARROW STRIPWith green D, ch 9, following the directions for afghan stitch as given for wide strip, work even for 3 rows. 4th
row: pick up a loop on the vertical bar of each of the first 3 sts (4 loops on hook), yarn 3 times over hook, counting down 3 rows,
draw up a loop through vertical bar of 2nd st in this row (1st row of strip), yarn over and through 2 loops, 3 times in succession,
yarn 3 times over hook, skip the next 5 sts in 1st row and draw up a loop through vertical bar of the next st, yarn over and through 2
loops, 4 times in succession, skip the st directly in back of the inverted V just completed, draw up a loop in each of the vertical bars
on the next 4 sts (9 loops on hook). Work off in same way as for regular afghan stitch. 5th row: work even in afghan stitch. 6th
row: pick up a loop through vertical bars of the first 3 sts, yarn 3 times over hook, counting 3 rows down, draw up a loop through
vertical bar of 2nd st in this row (3rd row of strip), yarn over and through 2 loops, 3 times in succession, then yarn 3 times over
hook, skip the next 5 sts of this row (3rd row) draw up a loop through vertical bar of next st (8th st of row), yarn over and through 2
loops, 4 times in succession, skip the st directly in back of the inverted V just made and draw up a loop in each of the remaining 4
sts; work off as usual. This completes the herringbone pattern; continue in this way to work even until there are 330 rows
completed from beginning, ending with an in-verted V stitch row; finish with a slip st row as on wide strip and fasten off. This
completes one narrow strip; make a 2nd strip in same way. With green C, work 4 narrow strips in same way, then with green B,
work 4 strips in same way also.
Arrange strips in order as shown in diagram and sew from wrong- side with an overhand stitch, taking up top thread of each st on
each edge only.
BORDERWith green D, working from right side of afghan, beginning in a corner, make a loop on hook and work 1 s c in comer
st, work * 1 s c in each st (or row) to next corner, 3 s c in corner st; repeat from * around, working all corners alike, end with 2 s c in
same place as the first st of round, join with a slip st in first s c and fasten off. 2nd round: with green C, working from same side as
last round, make a loop on hook and work 1 s c in center st of a corner group of 3 s c in round below, 1 s c in each st to next
corner, 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each st to next corner, work this corner same as last, then continue working in same way around,
working all corners alike; join and fasten off as in last round. 3rd round: with green B, work same as last round. 4th round: with
tan A, working from same side as last round, make a loop on hook and work 1 s c in a corner st, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, * ch
4, slip st in 5th st from hook (picot), 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts; repeat from * around, join with a slip st in first s c of round and
fasten off. Darn in ends, Embroider in cross stitch pattern as shown on embroidery charts.
