Safe
Boost your Internet defense system

The Internet is a great medium for both informationgathering and entertainment because of the sheer
volume of resources that is available at the tip of your
fingers. You can almost say that anything you could
possibly want to read, watch, and listen to is available
online. However, as with any other activity that gives
people access to vast amounts of information, there are
some risks involved in Internet usage. These risks can
range from slight annoyances to serious threats to your
personal information and security. Some of the dangers
you may encounter while online are the following:

In order to protect yourself

from online risks, here are
some tips you can follow while
surfing the web:
Turn on your PCs firewall to prevent hackers from
gaining access to your computer.
Use anti-virus software to protect your PC from
various malware and keep the software updated.
Only download software, programs, and apps from
trusted and reputable companies or websites.
Set a password for your home WiFi network.
Never give away personal information or passwords
to unknown contacts online, be it through email,
chat, or website forms.
When creating passwords, complexity is your best
friend; create long passwords with combinations
of upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and
symbols.

Malware such as viruses and spyware

Programs which contain codes that may cause
your computer to malfunction and compromise
the integrity of your data;

Change passwords every 3 months.

Fraud and identity theft

The use of personal information found online
to make fraudulent online transactions or even
create false identities;

Never open emails from unknown contacts or

entities. When in doubt, ignore and delete.

Phishing

THE BILL BASKETS

Separate your pending bills
from other mails. Dedicate an
envelope or a basket where
you can place your unsettled
bills. Sorting your mail will help
you determine which ones to
prioritize.

THE BILL ZONE

Find an area where you can
store and compute your bills
and expenses. This can be your
bedroom desk or kitchen table.
Place in your bill basket along
with a few office supplies, like
a calculator, a stapler, tape,
and some pens. This makes it
easy to grab all you need for bill
payments.

BILL PAYDAYS
Dedicate at least two days each
month to pay your bills. Try to
make this a habit. Anticipating a
bill payday every month will help
you manage your finances more
efficiently.

PRIORITY PAPERWORK
Reduce the number of bills
you receive by cancelling the
subscriptions that you no longer
use. Inactive subscriptions are
just a waste of time and add to
paper clutter.

BEATING
THE BULLy
Protect children from
cyberbullying

From hate pages to extreme humiliation on the digital space,

cyberbullying has caused severe stress, depression, and
anxiety among todays youth.
While it is more prevalent in the US, cyberbullying has started
creeping into the online habits of Filipino children and teens at
an alarming rate.
As the number of Filipino kids on the Internet increases, so
does the risk of cyberbullying. Eight out of 10 Filipino children
(82%) access the Internet weekly, while more than a third
(37%) are daily Internet users. Seventy three percent (73%) of
Filipino teens have online social profiles as of 2010.
The thought of their children being bashed and bullied in
cyberspace is a nightmare for most parents, but it is worse
for the children being cyberbullied; they could suffer from
extreme depression, which could lead to fatal consequences,
as reported in recent newspaper accounts.

Here are some ways to protect your child

from being cyberbullied:
Pay Attention to the red flags.
Kids who are cyberbullied send
behavioral signals that they need
help, and parents should watch out
for these signals. If your child gets
mood swings, is constantly angry,
or distances himself from his family
and friends, it may not just be part
of growing up; such behavior could
actually be a cry for help. If parents
notice these red flags, they could
resolve the problem before it gets any
bigger.
JOIN THE CLUB.
If your child is active in the social
network scene, you should be too.
Create your own Facebook account
if you still dont have one, and make
sure to add your child as family. That

way, youll be able to see what your

child is posting in cyberspace, and the
responses that he or she is getting.
Without being intrusive, make sure
to observe your childs social network
activities.
Have a one-on-one talk with your
child.
If your child mentions having trouble
with people online, like being
threatened, insulted, or otherwise
subjected to inappropriate behavior,
sit him down for a serious one-on-one
discussion. Listen carefully to what
he has to say, and try to find out how
he feels and what exactly disturbs
him. Assure him that you are always
there to support him in whatever he is
going through. Make him understand

that nothing is wrong with him, that

it is the cyberbully who is wrong by
trying to be socially dominant and
abusive online. Let him know what
cyberbullying is and how seriously it
affects the victim.
On the other hand, if your child
happens to be the cyberbully, step in
immediately. Make it clear that it is
never right to abuse, offend, or bash
others, online or otherwise. Stress
out the consequences of his actions.
Show support.
Take cyberbullying seriously, and help
your child cope with the stress. This is
a very difficult situation for your child;
he will need your guidance to help him
get through this. You may also tap
professional help to work with you and
your child on this problem.
FIND BETTER THINGS TO DO ONLINE.
Your child doesnt have to stay offline.
Make your childs Internet experience
positive by finding better online
communities or visiting websites with
affirmative content. Protecting your
child against Internet threats does not
mean never exploring cyberspace ever
again. Remind him that with proper
guidance, the Internet can still be his
tool for learning and discovery.
Take action.
Parents who seriously want to protect
their children from cyberbullying and
other Internet threats but do not
want to deprive them of the joy of
learning and exploration will find an
ally in Tattoo. Tattoo Home Broadband
