FLING THE TEACHER

WHAT Creates multiple choice quizzes with a minimum of 15

? questions. One wrong answer means the student has
to start again meaning that it is useful for learning
information. Hints are available to students (ask the
expert, take away 2 wrong answers, see votes as to
which might be the correct answer.)

WHER The ‘Fling the Teacher’ generator can be downloaded onto your computer
E? for free from http://www.contentgenerator.net/forum/index.php?
autocom=downloads&showfile=29.
It creates local html and swf files on your computer.

HOW?
Click on the (create a new game)
icon. You will then see a form where
you can enter the questions and
answers. Click the red arrow to
move on to the next question.
Save the questions as a text file on

your computer using . When you

have entered 15 questions the

icon will become active.

Review the set-up and then press . Your game will be created.

WHY? The game motivates students to repeat the questions until they get all the
answers right. This is the only way that they can see the teacher being
flung. This makes it a good tool for learning discrete pieces of information,
or where repeated attempts would benefit the students. It could be used
to:
• answer multiple choice grammar questions (e.g. accuracy exam
practice).
• activate background knowledge (e.g. the Internationalization of
Food) and follow up with questions about which information was the
most interesting / surprising.
• learn / review information (e.g. nations and nationalities, past simple
forms of verbs, gerunds/infinitives, or vocabulary meanings).
HALF A MIN
WHAT Creates a terminology quiz of at least two questions. It
? presents students with jumbled words and also has an
option to include an accompanying definition. The
students have to work out what each word is before the
time runs out. The terms are presented in a random
order each time the game is played.

question.
Save the questions as a text file on your
computer using . When you have

entered 3 questions the icon will

become active. Press this so that you can review the set-up and then press
‘generate quiz’. Your game will be created.

WHY? Students have to unjumble the letters making it a good game for focusing
on spelling. The optional definition setting can be used to give the meaning
or an example sentence. The time limit makes the game more fun and
challenging.
• learn / review information (e.g. past simple forms of verbs, or
vocabulary meanings).
JEOPARDY LABS

Enter a password and click ‘start building’.
Enter a title for the quiz. Then enter five
different categories across the top of the
columns. Click on the boxes in the grid
and create your questions.
Be careful creating questions because,
when you are playing the game, the
“Answer” will be presented and the
students have to supply the “Question”.
So, you need to write the question in the
“Answer” box and the answer in the “Question” box. Hit ‘save’ when
you’ve finished creating each question.
Click ‘save’ on the main grid to save your game and create the unique urls
for your game. You can always go back and edit your game (providing

be used to:
• review information (e.g. passive voice with the following categories –
present simple passive, past simple passive, active or passive in the
present simple, active or passive in the simple past, active or
passive in present simple or simple past).

KUBBU

and analyze their results. The free version is limited
to 30 students and 15 activities at a time. Students’

activities which have already been created and
shared by other teachers.

WHE You can register for Kubbu at http://www.kubbu.com. After you sign up, you
RE? can create activities which can be accessed from the website or printed
out.

HOW? Once you have registered Kubbu, you will have access to great tutorials
that will guide you through every stage of the process. These are available
from the “help” tab.
WHY? Activities can be created which students can access online. The advantage
of this site is that it allows you to track students’ results. It is useful for
teaching and reviewing information. This makes it especially useful for
grammar and vocabulary exercises.

benefit the students. It could be used to:
• learn / review information (e.g. past simple forms of verbs, or
vocabulary meanings).
WORDSMYTH NOW
WIDGET
WHAT This widget can be added to the favorite/bookmark
? toolbar of your browser so that you always have a
dictionary to hand. It can be used with many browsers,
such as Firefox and Chrome but does not function as

children or advanced) and
drag or add the Wordsmyth
NOW link to your Bookmarks
bar. If you cannot see the
bookmarks toolbar, you may
need to enable it. It can
usually be found under the
‘view’ menu of your browser.
For Internet Explorer, you
should right-click on the link
and save it to your ‘favorites’.
A message box will appear,
warning you that you are
adding a link that ‘may not be
safe’. This is a generic
warning, and you can safely
add the link to your ‘links’ folder. If you cannot see your links toolbar on
your browser window, you can select it in the toolbars menu, found under
‘view’. Once complete, use your mouse to select any word on any web
page, and then click the ‘Wordsmyth Now’ button on your toolbar. If you

let you enter any word you with for quick look up.

which meaning you want. You can even edit the dictionary definitions. The
worksheets are stored on the Wordsmyth server so they are easy to share.
There are two types of worksheet that you can prepare:

XTRANORMAL
WHAT Create monologues and dialogues online
? in a range of different scenes and using
different ‘actors’. You can control what
the characters say, some of their
movements and expressions, and even
the camera angles as you create
‘movies’.
The characters read out what you type
and there are a variety of voices to
choose from. The only problem is that, as
with all programs that read out what you type, the speech sounds a bit
stilted.

WHER You can create your movies at http://www.xtranormal.com/. You need to

E? create an account first. The completed movie is published online and a
unique url will be created which you can share with your students or which
they can share with you.

HOW? Choose a showpak and decide if you

want to create a movie with one or two
actors.
Each showpak contains several
different locations and actors. You can
select these at the bottom of the page.
Write the script that you want the
actor(s) to say. Drag action icons into
the script. These will allow you to direct
the action.
Click action to preview your work. You will be able to keep editing after
this. When you are happy with your movie, click ‘it’s a wrap’. A higher
quality version of your movie will then be created and you will have a
unique url to share the movie with others. Even at this stage, if you’re not
happy, you can still go back and edit the movie.

WHY? The voices do not sound natural and this limits possible uses. However, you
could use this to:
• practice listening to numbers, spelling of words, etc.
• have students prepare and film dialogues to practice a particular
language point, or to create an IELTS interview with their possible
answers to set questions.
• have students write a paragraph on a topic and then create a movie
for it
• do a dictogloss/grammar dictation. Students listen to a movie three
times and note down as much as they can, focusing on content
words. Then they recreate the text using http://primarypad.com (or
in the future possibly using google wave, as they have purchased
the original etherpad.com.)
• use the option of having actors look at the camera or away from the
camera to talk about the importance of eye contact during a
presentation
