1. MATHEMATICS: An airplane flying with the wind can cover a certain

distance in 2 hours. The return trip against the wind takes 2.5 hours.
How fast is the plane and what is the speed of the air, if the one-way
distance is 600 miles? (Let x-speed of the plane, y-speed of the wind)

a. x = 40, y = 260
b. x = 30, y = 270
c. x = 270, y = 30
d. x = 230, y = 70

2. FLUID MECHANICS: Gate AB is 5ft wide into the paper, hinged at A

and is restrained by a stop at B. Compute the reaction on Stop B if the
water h is 9.5ft deep.

3. MATHEMATICS: The two vertices of a

triangle are A(2,4) and B(-2,3). Find the locus of the third vertex of the
triangle if its area is 2 square units.
a. 4x - y = 12
b. 4x + 4y = 10
c. x + 4y = 12
d. x 4y = -10

4. SURVEYING: The long chord from the P.C. to the P.T. of a compound
curve is 300m long and the angles it makes with the longer and shorter
tangents are 12 and 15 respectively. If the common tangent is
parallel to the long chord, find the radius of the curves.

5. MATHEMATICS: The angle of elevation of the top of an incomplete

vertical pillar at a horizontal distance of 100 meters from its base is 45
degrees. If the angle of elevation of the top of the complete pillar at
the same point is to be 60 degrees, then the height of the incomplete
pillar is to be increased by how much?

6. HYDRAULICS: A vertical storage tank has a hemispherical bottom and

a cylindrical shell of 4m inside diameter and 4m height. It is filled with
water. Compute the time it will take to empty the tank through a sharpedged orifice 15cm in diameter. Located at the lowest point. Assume

d. 462 KN

8. SURVEYING: A steel tape is 100 m long at a temp. of 20C and a pull

of 10 kg. It was used to measure a distance of 624.95 m at a temp. of
32C with an applied pull of 15 kg during measurement with the tape
supported at both ends. Coefficient of thermal expansion is 0.0000116
2
mC and a modulus of elasticity if 2,000,000 kg/ cm . Weight of tape
