FLEXIBLE DISTANCE LEARNING

International Students

This degree programme is delivered via

distance learning, enabling students to study
to their own timescale. Online induction
courses will be held to explain the syllabus,
encourage interaction between participants,
introduce course/module co-ordinators, and
the systems used. An introductory group
assignment will additionally be held during
the induction course. During this programme
individual projects and supervisors will be
allocated. (is this still correct?)

Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with

not less than 5.5 in any component, or an
equivalent qualification acceptable to the
University is required. *Taken within the last 2
years.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The minimum entry requirement is normally a
2.2 Honours degree or equivalent qualification
in a relevant engineering/scientific discipline
with appropriate knowledge of chemistry and
mathematics equivalent to A-level standard.
Where appropriate levels of chemistry
and mathematics knowledge are not
demonstrated, a 2.1 Honours degree
or equivalent recognised qualification is
required. Applicants with non-standard
academic qualifications will be considered on
an individual basis.
Relevant background, experience and
career will be considered as a substitute for
a first degree, determined by the quality
and content of an applicants portfolio for
admission. Applicants may also be accepted
if they have extensive (over four years)
experience in a relevant responsible position
or have obtained credit grades at Stage 2
and Stage 3 of the Concrete Technology
and Construction examinations in General
Principles and Practical Applications set by
the Institute of Concrete Technology.

AIM
Attaining cost-effective, sustainable and
durable civil engineering structures requires
highly skilled construction professionals
at all stages of a given project. Specialist
concrete knowledge is required at design,
procurement, materials selection and
proportioning, testing, and construction
stages. The aim of this Masters is to provide
in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge,
at an advanced level, of a wide variety of
topics within the field of concrete technology.

PROGRAMME CONTENT
Modules include:
Concrete Construction Practice and
Applications
Concrete Materials
Concrete Production, Processes and Supply
Early Age Concrete Performance
Long-Term Concrete Performance
Statistical Tools and Research Methods
All problem-based assignments will be
designed to ensure a robust knowledge of the
programme syllabus, which incorporates the
following core topics:

Aggregates
Assessment of Concrete Construction
Cements, Additions and Admixtures
Concrete Applications
Concrete Plant and Equipment
Concrete Specification and Mix Design

Durability of Concrete and Concrete

Construction
Formwork and Exposed Concrete Finishes
Health and Safety
Principles of Concrete Design
Properties of Fresh and Hardened Concrete
Quality Concepts and Control
Ready-Mix and Precast Concrete
Repairing Concrete
Special Concretes, Processes and
Technologies
Standards, Specifications and Codes of
Practice
Test Methods and Equipment

ASSESSMENT
All web-based modules will be assessed on
the submission of a final report and a written
examination dealing with both the theoretical
and practical aspects of the subject. Each will
account for 50 per cent of the non-research
final score. For MSc only - Research project
work will be carried out under the guidance of
a supervisor. Assessment will be based on a
final dissertation.

SPECIAL FEATURES
This Masters degree is professionally
accredited by the Institute of Concrete
Technology. The Institute is internationally
recognised, sets high educational standards
and requires its members to abide by a Code
of Professional Conduct thus enhancing
the profession of concrete technologist.
Successful students will additionally be
awarded its professional qualification in
Advanced Concrete Technology.
As part of the course, we are offering 2 years
free corporate membership to the Institute,
entitling members to use the designatory
