1 Inspire Designer Deployment | 4

Inspire Designer Deployment

A typical Inspire Designer deployment model is structured in the following way:

The scenario consists of these individual applications:

Inspire Designer Desktop

Inspire Designer serves for designing and producing documents using variable data.

Inspire Production Server

Inspire Production Console or Inspire Production Server ensure network-based production of variable-data documents,
especially for high-volume printing. The applications can be called by Inspire Automation
(or an online tool) and they
use resources from Inspire Content Manager.

Content Manager Server

GMC License Manager (typically installed separately to ICM) monitors and restricts access to licenses.
Inspire Content Manager
serves as a central storage of resources (WFD files, images, fonts, data, etc). Rights for the
resources are based on user roles.

2 Requirements | 5

Requirements

2.1

HW and SW Requirements

Minimum hardware (processor, memory etc.) and software (operating system, database etc.) requirements, as well as
supported interfaces and upgrades, are described in the Release Notes of the corresponding version of the application.
These are available online from www.gmc.net/documentation .

2.2

Licensing

Inspire Designer can be licensed using any of the following license types:
Net license
Demo license
Other license types
You must have a license provided to you by GMC Support before you can install the application.
The separate document An Introduction to Licensing (available online from the Licensing section of the Documentation
portal in the GMC User Community) introduces the controls and architecture used by licenses, such as license types and
deployment environments. Such information can be useful when requesting a license from GMC.

2.2.1

Net Licensing

Net licensing is the preferred licensing method. It should be used for all network licensing purposes and uses ls.lic license
files placed in directories and GMC License Manager.
Before you install Inspire Designer, you should install GMC License Manager. See the separate document GMC License
Manager Installation Guide
(available online from the Licensing section of www.gmc.net/documentation ).

2.2.2

Demo Licensing

The Inspire Designer on Linux can also run using a demo license which has a strict time limitation. You can obtain a demo
licence from GMC Support.
A demo license is for a trial period and should be later replaced by a Net license if the software is to be used for production
purposes. Install Inspire Designer for Linux and then copy the PNetT.lic demo license file to the installation directory.

2.2.3

Other License Types

Inspire Designer on Linux also supports SW and HW licenses, however these are legacy types of license and are no longer
recommended for new installations. If you are using these license type (e.g. when upgrading existing installations) and
require information on their set-up, please refer to the Inspire Designer Installation Guide for Linux or the Public Licensing
Guide
of version 8.1 or earlier.

2 Requirements | 6

2.3

Installer

To install the Inspire Designer application, run the Inspire-Designer-Linux64-<version>.tar.sh

For GMC employees, the installer can be found in the Inspire Designer | Installer

2.4

directory of FileTrack.

Access Rights

To install Inspire Designer, switch the user to root (administrator) using the command su. To run Inspire Designer it is
sufficient to use a standard user account.

NOTE

It is strongly recommended that the user is a member of "gmc" group.

3 Installation | 7

Installation

This is the sequence in which you should perform an installation:

1. Check if your current operating system is supported. See the Requirements chapter of the Inspire Designer Release
Notes Linux.
2. Find out which licensing method you will use for the installation and check the respective information about the
method in this guide.
3. Check the access rights of the user account that you will be performing the installation under.
4. Now you can install Inspire Designer for Linux.
5. Optionally install Inspire Production Server and Inspire Content Manager to run after the system start-up using
the two init scripts available in the installation directory.

3.1

Installing Inspire Designer for Linux 64

The distribution package consists of one file: Inspire-Designer-Linux64-<version-string>.tar.sh (exact name might
be different as it depends on current build).
1. Run the command chmod a+x Inspire-Designer-Linux64-<version-string>.tar.sh to make it an executable
file.
2. Run the command ./Inspire-Designer-Linux64-<version-string>.tar.sh. The End User License Agreement
is displayed. Hit <Q> when you finish reading.
3. After confirming the license agreement the archive is unzipped. It contains the following files:
aksusbd-redhat-1.14-3.i386.rpm
aksusbd-suse-1.14-3.i386.rpm
install.sh
Inspire-Designer-Linux64-<version-string>.rpm
Inspire-Designer-SW-Lic-1.0-0.noarch.rpm
4. To install Inspire Designer use the following commands:
a) Switch the user to root (administrator) using the command su.
b) Inspire Designer can be installed in the following ways:
Run the ./install.sh which will guide you through the installation. It installs Inspire Designer executables
and Redist.

3 Installation | 8

NOTE The command ./install.sh --non-root-installation can also be used to install Inspire
Designer on a normal user (non-root) account, i.e. without step 4a. But this is not recommended
as you will not be able to uninstall the application.

Alternatively, you can use the rpm package to install the files manually with the command rpm ivh
Inspire-Designer-Linux64-<version-string>.rpm to install the package. The installation will install
the Inspire Designer executables, Redist (PDF Library and Normalizer) and two init scripts (for Inspire
Production Server and Inspire Content Manager) to the directory /opt/GMC/Inspire-Designer-64bit-<version-string>.
The runtime environment setting is ensured by wrapper scripts.

3.2

Installing Inspire Production Server and ICM to Run after Start-up

If you want to have Inspire Production Server or Inspire Content Manager running directly after the system start-up,
without starting them manually, you can make use of the two init scripts available in the installation directory after Inspire Designer for Linux has been installed.
To install Inspire Production Server and/or Inspire Content Manager to run always after start-up, do the following:
1. Go to the installation directory, i.e. /opt/GMC/Inspire-Designer-64bit-<version-string> or the one you
specified during installation.
2. Customize the init script:
To specify the user under whom Inspire Production Server and/or Inspire Content Manager will run, modify
the line user='default'. Change it to your account or create a special user for running these applications.
For security reasons it is recommended not to use the 'root' account.
If you want to use Net licensing for these applications, delete the '#' mark at the beginning of the licensing
options and enter the name of the server in the CX_LIC_SERVER=hostname line.
3. Change directory using the command cd /etc/init.d.
4. Create link using the command
ln -s /opt/GMC/Inspire-Designer-64bit-<version-string>/PNetTNetServer-init.sh

or
ln -s /opt/GMC/Inspire-Designer-64bit-<version-string>/PNetTVCS-init.sh

5. Perform registration in the system using the command

chkconfig --add PNetTNetServer-init.sh or
chkconfig --add PNetTVCS-init.sh.

When the computer starts / shuts down, each init script will be executed under the root (administrator) account. Inspire
Designer init script will switch from root to the user specified in step 2 and start / stop the application under this user. If
you are logged in as that user you can stop, start or restart the service using commands, e.g.:

3 Installation | 9

/etc/init.d/PNetTNetServer-init.sh start
/etc/init.d/PNetTNetServer-init.sh stop
/etc/init.d/PNetTVCS-init.sh restart

4 Post Installation Steps | 10

Post Installation Steps

4.1

LDAP SSL Certificates

Certificates are used to verify an authenticity of a server.

To verify a certificate:
1. Configure the SSL certificate's verification for LDAP in /etc/openldap/ldap.conf.
The verification is done against a server, e.g. server.xyz.net:

EXAMPLE

TLS_CACERT

/etc/openldap/certs/xyz.pem

TLS_CACERTDIR

/etc/openldap/certs

TLS_REQCERT

demand

Where TLS_CACERT specifies a file that contains all the certificates provided by the Certificate Authority
and recognized by the client, TLS_CACERTDIR specifies a path to a directory that contains Certificate Authority certificates stored in separate files, TLS_REQCERT specifies the validation level performed on the
certificate itself.
For a full description of the individual elements, see the Linux documentation

2. Save the server's certificate and trusted authority certificate to /etc/openldap/certs.

You can get the server certificate using the following command:
openssl s_client -connect xyz:636 -showcerts

NOTE

When saving the certificate as a xyz.pem file, make sure to include both -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- and -----END CERTIFICATE----- elements. These are considered as integral parts of the certificate itself.

3. Run the following command:

c_rehash /etc/openldap/certs

4. Open Inspire Designer and set up a synchronization point in Inspire Content Manager.

4 Post Installation Steps | 11

You can read more about Synchronization Points

in the Inspire Designer User Manual.

NOTE For Server, enter the server's name in the exactly same form as in the certificate, e.g. server.xyz.net
If you would like to use the certificate not only for LDAP, save it to /etc/ssl/certs (if the path exists).

5 Uninstallation | 12

Uninstallation

To uninstall Inspire Designer use the following commands:

Switch the user to root (administrator) using the command su
Use the command rpm e Inspire-Designer-64bit-<version-string>

NOTE The uninstall procedure will remove the default content of the /opt/GMC (or the alternative installation
directory). Files added by the user will be preserved.
