annotatedscore(photocopytheworkandmakeallannotationsneatlyindarkink)aswell
asaprosesection(610pagesoftypedcommentarywithexamplesfromthecomposition
ifthathelpsilluminatetheanalysis).YoushouldconsidertheLaRuianSHMRGpoints
intheprosesectionandbesurethatallarecoveredsufficiently.Youmightwantto

Project2:CompositioninRomantic,Post Romantic or
Early 20th century style
Thiswillbeanoriginalcompositionoranarrangementofapreexistingcompositionthat
demonstratesthetechniquesoftheerachosen.Theworkwillbefortwoormore
classroominstruments.Itwillbeaccompaniedbyananalysisofitsworkings.Ideally,all
workswillbeperformedinclass(itisrequiredtohaveabackupcdoftheworkthatcan

beplayedthroughthesoundsystem).Thecompositionwillbeatleast3minutesinlength
andwillbecomputernotated(NortonManualisinstricteffect).Besuretosupplythe
correctpartsforthemusiciansbeforetheperformancedate.
CourseDescription
Thecoursewillprovideanindepththeoreticalstudyofthemusicofthelateclassical
periodtothedawnofthe20thcentury(ca.18801913).Thiswillbeachievedthroughthe
aural,analyticandcompositionalstudyoftheliterature.
Studentswillacquirefluencyintheharmonic,rhythmic,sonic,melodicandstructural
aspectsoftheliterature.Thisfluencywillbedemonstratedbyexemplarsofstudent
compositions(forclassperformance)inthestylesbeingstudiedaswellaswritten
analysisofappropriatecompositions(alsopresentedtotheclassasawhole).
