words by Ray Butch Gamboa

Excerpts from original article at http://www.philstar.com/motoring/

With an impeccable combination of warm morning

sunshine and chilly breeze, the flag off of the 1st leg of the
2015 Sunshine TV Auto Rally Corporate Challenge (STV
ARCC) last March 14 in scenic Tagaytay City was picture
perfect, having the Highlands Golf Clubhouse or Highlander
Steakhouse as rustic background from various vantage
points. Tagaytay Highlands provided the venues for the
yearly events flag off and finish that was capped with snack
and light cocktails cum raffle at the lounge of the Tagaytay
Steakhouse, indeed a very elegant way of winding down after
a hard day of auto rallying.
This years Tagaytay leg of the STVARCC saw an array of 40
brand new cars of various makes and models (Chevy, Ford,
Honda, Hyundai, Isuzu, Lexus, Mazda, MINI, Nissan, Audi,
Porsche, Subaru and Toyota) on the starting grid fielded
by 12 Corporate Rally Teams from the local automotive
industry. The Tagaytay leg starts its Alpha Stage (morning
run) from Tagaytay Midlands and end at the Tagaytay City
Convention Center for a lunch break and flag off from there
for the Beta Stage (afternoon run) back to Tagaytay Midlands
for the rally finish. In between, STVARCC participants made
their way through the different rustic and historical places
surrounding scenic Tagaytay City, which include Laurel,
Talisay, Batino and Tanauan City.

round of congratulations is in order as the Tagaytay Highlands team took home the Overall Champion crown

Joey Solis and Jenz Tecson

Lyndon Tan and Yancy Siladan

What can you say about the

tournament and your team?
Jenz Tecson: My partner and I played well.
Considering that the condition of the course
is a bit hard, I think that day we played really
well, especially my partner. All of his putts are
going in, especially when you play scramble,
thats the key. Its really about the putting.
Joey Solis: It was fun. For our team, my
partner was really good who made me feel
very confident [about our team].
Lyndon Tan: Yancy and I have only been
playing golf for a year and a half, and weve
already been partners in a lot of tournaments.
Yancy Siladan: I met Lyndon in Tagaytay
Highlands. We started playing golf right
about the same time and since we also have
been playing golf for the same amount of
time, I feel comfortable about our team, our
partnership. We always play together, as a
team, in almost every tournament here in the
Highlands and Midlands.
Misha Lee: I find scramble easy. As for our
team, I am playing with my husband and
weve been playing together for a long time
already. I started playing four years ago and it
was my husband who taught me.
Bruce Lee: My good partner is my wife. It is
very difficult to find other partners here. It
would be easier for me to choose my wife as
partner. Also, she is a very good player.

What do you like about your

team?
JT: My partner and I have been partners for I
dont know how many years already. We are
already very used to playing as partners so I
dont think we have problems at all.
20 | HIGHLANDS VIEW

Bruce and Misha Lee

JS: On the holes with par 5we always go for the

greens on our second shot, which would normally
take 3 shots to do, just to set the bar high. If we will
get a birdy on the par 5s, thats 4 under already,
giving us better chances in winning in our division.
LT: We communicate well as a team. We always
strategize with one always being the aggressive
[player] and takes risks, the gambler, while the
other is the strategist. Because the game is a
scramble, somebody has to take the risk.
YS: We are open to each other. We freely discuss
ideas and being cooperative as a team.
ML: I think being husband and wife, we are able to
communicate better as a team, is an advantage.

COVER STORY

JS: The layout of the Highlands golf course has a similarity with
Splendidos so playing [at Highlands] helped us a lot. If you can
play Highlands, you can play any course.
LT: Tagaytay Highlands has a very difficult green. I think its an
advantage for us that when you play on the Highlands and
Midlands courses, combine the two and it will feel like youre
playing on the Splendido course. Splendido has a lot of ditches,
which feels like the Highlands, and the greens are very fast, like
in the Midlands. So playing both the Highlands and Midlands can
really prepare you for Splendido.
YS: We are very fortunate here because we have Highlands,
Midlands, and the Lucky Nine. Every course is different. Playing
and being familiar with those courses gave us the confidence to
play Splendido.

ML: Tagaytay Highlands golf courses are very difficult, with small
fairways and difficult greens, but if you can play here, you can play
good in other courses.

If youre not busy playing on the greens, what

other things are you busy doing?
JT: I help run a coffee shop, a family business, in Manila.
JS: Golf is just a hobby and a way for me to relax. I am a contractor. I do
mechanical and electrical works, and mainly general construction.

The Nutcracker
Almost every girl who once dreamt of being a ballerina is
familiar with the story of The Nutcracker, a magical story
about a girl who received a toy nutcraker which came to life
as a handsome prince and they had a wonderful adventure
together. That magic was brought to Tagaytay Hihglands
all thanks to the Philippine Ballet Theatre who performed
excerpts from the famous ballet. Members and guests
watched in silent awe of the graceful and strong performance
of the cast. The event was made possible with the help of

Belenismo Around The World

On the Christmas Eve of 1223, St. Francis of Assisi made the first living crche or nativity scene
after being inspired by his recent visit in the Holy Land. Since then, it has become as iconic and
important as the Christmas Tree. Displayed at the Belenismo exhibit were 20 different figurine sets
of the nativity scene according to different cultures to mark the anniversary year. The exhibit was
held at the Highlands Golf Clubhouse from December 26, 2014 to January 4, 2015. Mrs. Gloria
Ocampo-Reyes, the owner of the collection, said that it all started from a Hummel German
nativity set her mother bought in Bacharach, Germany in 1969. The exhibit showcases what her
family collected through years of travelling, and gifts from friends and family. For her, these
figurines on display are more than just ornaments but a tradition. What they are and what they
represent has become their treasurea blessed, happy family.

oming from a lineage that goes

a long way in Philippine art
history, Mrs. Elaine O. Herbosa
passionately devoted much of her life to
two of her greatest treasuresart and her
family.
Mrs. Herbosa was born from the Ongpin
family who are descendants of Damian
Domingo, a painter back in the 18th
century and was the first recognized
Filipino artist. Other notable artists down
the line are Roman Ongpin, philanthropist
and a national hero of the Philippine
revolution whose bronze statue stands
in the Binondo plaza and had the main
street in Chinatown named after him.
Another is Alfonso Ongpin, patron of the

arts, renowned for being a Rizalist and

having the widest collection of Philippine
art in his time. Also equally proud, on her
husband Pochs side of the family, Jose
Rizal was his great grand uncle.
Mrs. Herbosa and her daughter, Mia, are
thankful for the genes from their ancestors,
which is why it was logical for them to take
painting as a career, continuing the legacy
of their ancestors. Mia paints in New
York City and has a large following, and is
known as an international artist with 24
years of training. Mrs. Herbosa runs an art
studio in Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa City
and owns and is the president of Larc en
Ciel Atelier, Inc.

With the help of Mrs. Herbosa, LArc

en Ciel Atelier Inc. was able to hold
an exhibit at The Gallery, Highlands
Golf Clubhouse last March. The exhibit
showcased artworks of their members,
which consists of different still-life and
landscape paintings, most of oil on canvas.
The company defines their works as art
without angst, bias and discrimination.
Art borne from pure passion transformed
into skill. Beauty represented in all
its incarnation. Club member art
aficionados had the opportunity to
purchase and take home some of these
spectacular artworks.
Mrs. Herbosa just recently had her
3-month vacation in New York City,
enjoying the company of her daughter,
Mia; her son-in-law Paul, a chef at the Ritz
Carlton on Battery Park; and her versatile
and beautiful 12-year-old granddaughter,
Lana, who is now a 6th grader in a
Waldorf School. Leaving behind in
Alabang is her son; Al, a banker at BDO;
and her two grandchildren; Luigi, 17 years
old, tall, handsome, a basketball star in
our village, and will be getting into college
at De La Salle this August; and Nina, 14
years old, beautiful and talented, and one
of the youngest addition in their family of
artists.

Belle Gives Life To Learning

Giving back to its community counterparts, Belle Corporation helped
give life to the four walls of learning of hundreds of students by tapping
its five beneficiary schools for Brigada Eskwela, an annual initiative of
Department of Education (DepEd).

ith this years theme, Tayo Para sa Kalinisan, Kaligtasan at

Kahandaan ng ating mga Paaralan, Belle employees worked
hand-in-hand with the whole community in painting
classrooms and other facilities in Sulpoc, Aya, Montaa, Tranca, and
Quilling Elementary Schools. Color, after all, has proven to have a
paramount effect in the information absorption and recall as studies
have shown that colors stimulate particular brain functions. From the
five schools, a total of 71 rooms were refurbished, including principals
offices, computer and home economics rooms, to provide the students a
better and conducive learning arena. The project was implemented from
May 20-29, just in time before the pupils went back to school.

Belle Corp President Frederick Dybuncio with employees

Through this activity, community building and volunteerism were

promoted as over 90 employees stepped out from the comforts of their
offices and into the scorching heat, working hand-in-hand with parents
and teachers for the improvement of their local public schools.
Brigada Eskwela is an annual nationwide program of DepEd which
is usually held every two weeks before the official start of classes. It
encourages nationwide voluntary efforts in terms of maintenance and
contributions to improve the educational environment in the country,
especially in public schools.
Last year, Belle Corporation, in coordination with Lipa Archdiocesan
Social Action Commission, Inc. initially implemented Belle Kaagapay
sa Kalusugan a school feeding program which aims to monitor and
improve the pupils nutritional status. This project benefited a total of
358 public elementary school students classified as malnourished who
eventually had noticeable gain in height and weight. Another remarkable
progress was in terms of their school attendance, with some of them even
being awarded as honor students.
Belle through its corporate social responsibility brand KAAGAPAY, aims
to strengthen its involvement with its partner communities through its
projects. Other than the support and assistance it provides, it aspires to
transform them into sustainable communities.
