PART I: READING COMPREHENSION [10 marks]

Questions 1 to 5 are hased on the Iollowing passage. Circle the BEST option.

TRANSFER Road in Penang is famous for roti canai and nasi kandar stalls, writes
C.K. LAM.

PENANG is the ultimate gastronomic paradise for most of us. It is well-known

for its abundance of superb hawkers' delights which locals claim cannot be
duplicated elsewhere. Since Penang is synonymous with good food, there are
many places with a good concentration of hawker stalls and restaurants on the
island and one particular place is Transfer Road.
5
II

Mention roti canal and the locals will point you to the most famous landmark in
Transfer Road. This famous roti canai stall has been in operation for 20 years
next to an old abandoned warehouse. Breakfast here is an indulgence - soak in
the atmosphere and enjoy the slow pace of life in Penang.

1II

There are several delicious curries - mutton, beef and, chicken and dhal to
complement the roti canai. However, the best combination is kuah hanjir!

IV

Customers can also order the curries without the rotl canai. Chicken curry comes
with tender pieces of meat in flavourful gravy. However, most customers prefer
the tender mutton curry which is relatively spicy. The aromatic mutton is a crowd
favourite. The stall is open from 6.30am till 7.00pm, with a break from 1.00pm
till 3.30pm.

10

15

Just a stone's throwaway from the roti canal stall is the famous Nasi Padang
Minang Restaurant. Located on the left hand side of Transfer Road, this
restaurant has been serving a delectable spread of Sumatra delights for decades.
Though Padang cooking is characterised by lots of chilli, lemongrass and 20
turmeric, surprisingly, most of the dishes here are not very hot. The restaurant
emphasises taste and flavours rather than hotness.

VI

The array of dishes is inviting, with a selection of fish, meat and fresh vegetables
which are spiced for a range of flavours. Dendeng daglng is prepared dry and
eaten with chilli and onion to enhance the flavours of the meat. It is well-spiced, 25
with a chewy bite. On the other hand, deep-fried cencaru sambal is stuffed with
ground red chilli and deep fried onion which is simply scrumptious!

VII

There are also dishes unique to this restaurant, such as stir fried tempeh with
French bean. Others are chicken curry and vegetable lodeh. The curry is savoury
with a mild spicy taste while lodeh stands out with flavourful coconut milk gravy.

30

VIII In addition to roti canai and nasi padang, Transfer Road also has a famous nasi
kandar stall. Deen Nasi Kandar, which has been in business for nearly 50 years, is
among the oldest stall of its kind in Penang. It is located in Kedai Kopi Toon
Leong, an old-style coffee shop located in a heritage shop house at the comer of
Transfer Road and Argyll Road.

It has a variety of spicy dishes with a riot of l1avours and choices such as beeL
squid, fish and chicken. Its curries have a distinctive and outstanding taste, and
many customers t10ck here for kuah hanjir as well. In addition to the excellent
squid curry, its signature catfish head curry is a must-have. Unlike Nasi Padang
Minang Restaurant Deen Nasi Kandar opens early for breakfast. Business is brisk 40
and quite often the dishes are sold out by mid-morning! It closes on alternate
Sundays.

PART II: SUMMARY [30 marks]

}()U

are advised to spend ahout 40 mill utes on this question.

Read the following passage carefully. Write a summary on how to start a business in not
more than 100 words.
Running your own business is not only a rewarding but engaging career as it demands your
time and focus. It is crucial for you to live your work until it is established so that it can get
otf the ground successfully. In doing so, there are many different opinions about how to start
a business, ranging from researching and writing a detailed business plan to organise it all, or,
you can just jump into a passion and try to make money out of it.
Your business begins with your idea. Your idea here can be coming up with a brand new
invention or product. or delivering existing service or product more efficiently and
economically, or even having customised existing product or service to tit an opportunity.
Whatever your choice is, identifying what your business is based on gives the underlying
principle of the whole picture.
The next step to be taken is to include research into things like how much you can charge for
your product or service, how much it will cost to produce or deliver, including variable and
fixed costs, and the size of your potential market, for example, number of customers. This
putting together a business plan should also evaluate your competitors by looking at their
number, location and time taken to be able to compete with them. This business plan should
also put forward strategies in identifying the requirements to enter your specified market as
well as barriers to the entry, such as high fixed costs and government regulations that must be
met. With these items in place, your business will be having a comprehensive business plan.
At the startup of your business, you also need to determine if you need any financing. How
will you pay the costs to start and run your business? Do you need a bank loan? Or, can you
use your credit card? What about financing your business all by yourself? How much salary
do you need to support yourself while starting the business? This financing section is another
crucial aspect to be looked upon when you are about to start a business.
Putting together your marketing plan is also necessary in order to turn a business dream of
yours into a reality. Marketing, however, need not cost a fortune. Some businesses require
very little, as they build their reputation based on mouth-to-mouth referrals. Joining free or
low-cost associations can also build awareness of your newly-founded business. Your
marketing plan therefore can be achieved through a weIl-planned marketing etforts
undertaken.
Then, you need to build your infrastructure early. This does not mean building a big factory
or designing a fancy ottice. It simply means keeping accurate customer records and an
accurate set of your bookkeeping. It is a sign of downfall for your business when you do not
know whether you are making or losing money. Customers' history and infornlation are your
best asset, therefore, you should be able to safeguard it.

Once you have set your mind into having a business, you should always think about and
focus on making money first, wherever possible. instead of spending money. Besides getting
business supplies or advertising ready, plan by establishing some new business clients ahead
of time. Do not wait until you are out of clients to look for some new clients. The more new
clients you arc able to bring into the business, the more money you can bring in and therefore
the more profitable you are going to be.
Another pivotal strategy is to make use of every technology available as this will give your
newly start-up business a competitive advantage. The worldwide web is a customer's research
tool. For instance, the internet helps your future customers to learn more about your business
by getting the first-hand information on what you are selling and why your product or service
is different and better than your competitors'. In other words, technology enables you to reach
your customers in a very effective way.
Last but not the least, when starting your business, remember to make paying for your item or
service convenient for the customers as in today's modem world, you should also understand
how people pay. Carrying cash can be risky and therefore, as an alternative, most people
choose to carry Visa or MasterCard as well as debit cards. So, along with having a sales
counter cash register, be prepared to accept credit cards by having credit card machine ready.
With your website sets up, you should also make PayPal payments available because most
consumers feel that this is more secure.
OveralL the strategies will not be effective if done individually. When combined and nurtured
to work as one and with the right assembly, it will surely bring endless prosperity to your
newly-founded business.
