Nanotechnology
Imagine you could go to the restaurant and drop a bowl of pasta, soup or hot chocolate on
your white suit. You can just feel comfortable and continue eating the way you want because it
will leave no stains. This won't be imaginary anymore, because scientist all over the world are
developing nanotechnology to make this real. Good morning everyone, in my presentation today,
I am going to inform you about the positive effects using nanotechnology. First, I will talk about
the definition of nanotechnology. Then, how do small things make difference? Finally, how
nanotechnology is related to textiles, medicine and cars.
Now, does anyone know what Nanotechnology is? Nanotechnology comprises of two
words Nano and technology. Nano is a Greek word meaning small or dwarf. In mathematics,
nanometer means one billion of a meter. To put these measurement in a way you can imagine it,
according to national Nanotechnology initiative, a human hair is approximately 100,000
nanometers wide. The second word technology means the technique to convert scientific
principle to design or new materials. According to the book "Nanotechnology for Dummies" by
Earl Boysen and Nancy C. Muir, the whole word nanotechnology is the way of making things on
a very small scale.
Why does small make a difference? At this nanoscale things are used in different ways
than in their larger form due to quantum mechanical effects by manipulating materials and
changing them. How? For example, a sheet of aluminum foil is a handy way to keep your

sandwiches fresh until lunchtime. But if you grind this aluminum into smaller and smaller pieces,
(Nano sized in fact) something odd happens they start to explode! This makes aluminum
nanoparticles great for putting in rocket fuel. But did you ask yourself why does that happen?
Actually, chemical reactions usually happens with the surface atoms and if we compare normal
materials to nanoparticles we will find that normal materials atoms are accumulating on each
other that's mean they have internal and external atoms and the possibility of the interact of the
internal atoms is low. However, in nanoparticles the possibility of the chemical reaction is higher
because all the atoms are on surface.
Nanotechnology has many positive effects. Firstly, Nanotechnologies will be used in
textiles mainly to make things stain-resistance. Nano coatings will be created and bond with the
textile like the leaves of a lotus plant. They repel water and other liquids. When it rains, little
beads of water roll off instead of spreading out in the plant leaves. The plant does this using its
own nanotechnology. Basically, Nano-sized hairs combine with the wax coating of the leaf to
make the water droplets sit up on the surface without dispersing onto the leafs surface below. So
that little Nano-sized molecular hooks attach to the fabric of the clothes to repel the water.
Secondly, Nanotechnology will help in car manufacturing. Everyone who has ever
owned a new car knows the heartbreak of that first big scratch in the paint so several companies
are producing scratch-resistant products that could be built into your cars paint. These products
use nanoparticles that form chemical bonds to the car surface, creating a longer-lasting coating.
Thirdly, Nanotechnology will help in creating what is called smart drugs, which will help
cure people faster and without the side effects present in traditional drugs. Also, using the bottom
up approach which is building up atom to atom to have a Nano robot which is smaller than

individual organic cell so we can use them infuse into a person's bloodstream to sure diseases.at
the end we will have better patient care and understanding of biological processes
In conclusion I have already explained nanotechnology, the positive effects of using it and
how it's related to textile, car manufacturing and medicine and how these development will help
u in future. Now does anyone have questions? Hope you have enjoyed the lecture.
