Iwillteachaminilessononvocabularyrelatedtoplacesinandaroundtheschoolbuilding.
StudentswillparticipateinaguidedreadinglessononConMiHermano/WithMyBrother.
Studentswillthentakeatouraroundtheschoolbuildingandtakepicturesofthingstheysee
ineachlocation.Later,studentswillchoosewhichareatheywouldliketofocusonand
createaPrezipresentationtopresenttotheclassandteachthemaboutthatareaandthe
rules,procedures,andexpectationsofstudentswhentheyareinthatarea.Studentswill
findastaffmemberwhoworkscloselywiththatarea,andtheywillconductabrieffive
questioninterviewwiththatstaffmember.Studentswillthencreatetheirpresentationsand
teachtheclassabouttheirareaofchoice.

Five45minuteclasssessions
Commentary:
Aftertheminilessonandguidedreadinglessononthefirstday,Iwillhookthestudentsby
discussingtheirfavoriteareasintheschoolandwhattheyenjoymostaboutthoseareas.
(Ex.playingbasketballinthegymnasium,creatingsculpturesintheartroom,workingon
MobyMaxduringmathclass,etc.)Iwillaskthemtocompareandcontrastourschooland
schoolroutineswithschoolstheyhaveattendedinthepast.Someofthechallengesinthis
assignmentmaybethatourschooldaylookssomuchdifferentthanwhatstudentshave
experiencedinschoolsintheirhomecountry.(InChina,studentsremainedinthesame
classallday,whiletheteachersswitchedclassesInArgentina,therewerenoschool
cafeteriasbecausestudentsweredismissedforlunchandreturnedtoschoollater,In
Somalia,therewasnoformalschoolingattherefugeecamps,etc.)Iwouldgetthem
thinkingaboutsomeoftheroutinesorplacestheyenjoyaboutourschoolorthoseactivities
orplacestheydislikesotheystarttothinkaboutanareatheywouldliketoexploreand
discussalittlemore.
InstructionalProcedures:
Day1:
First10minutes:WeekendNewsStudentspracticeconversationalgrammarbysharing
aboutwhattheydidoverthepastweekend.
10minutes:IwillteachaMiniLessonfocusingonvocabularythatrelatestoplacesinthe
schoolandschoolroutines.Iwillgooverabriefexplanationoftheschooldayandthe
proceduresfollowedineachareaorclassroom.(Ex.Aftergoingtothebathroom,students
washtheirhandsandthenlineupalongthewall.)
15minutes:GuidedreadingsmallgrouplessononConMiHermano/WithMyBrother.
Studentswillreadthepassage,identifyandhighlightvocabularywordsandusereading
strategiestodecodeorfigureoutunfamiliarwords.
10minutes:Studentswilldiscussthestoryandmakeconnectionstotheirownexperiences.
Iwillalsotaketimetoexplainanyconfusingvocabularyorconcepts.
Day2:
15minutes:Iwillaskstudentstoremembersomeoftheschoolvocabularyfromthestory,
ConMiHermano.Studentswillengageinadiscussionabouttheirfavoriteareasinour
schoolandwhattheyenjoymostaboutthoseareas.Iwillaskthemtocompareandcontrast
ourschoolandschoolroutineswithschoolstheyhaveattendedinthepast.
10minutes:Iwillthenexplainhowwearegoingtofurtherexploreourschoolbytakinga
tour.Iwillletthemknowtheymustchooseoneareaintheschooltheywouldliketofocus
onfortheirpresentation.IwillpassoutarubricforthePreziassignmentandanswerany
questons.
20minutes:Studentswilltakeatouroftheschoolandtakephotographsofeacharea.
Day3:
15minutes:Studentswillconducttheirinterviewwiththestaffmemberintheirchosenarea
tolearnmoreabouttherules,proceduresandexpectationsofstudentswhileinthatarea.
30minutes:StudentswillbegiventimetogetstartedontheirPrezipresentationsfollowing
theguidelinesintherubric.
Day4:
45minutes:StudentswillbegiventimetoworkontheirPrezipresentationsfollowingthe
guidelinesintherubric.Iwillbegoingaroundtoeachstudentandprovidingassistance,
suggestionsandacademicsupport.WhentheyarefinishedwiththeirPrezi,studentswill
practicewhattheyaregoingtosayfortheiroralpresentation.
Day5:
5minutes:Iwillprovideabriefreminderofmyexpectationsfortheoralpresentations(time
duration,showingrespectwhileothersarepresenting,questionsandcommentswillwait
untilaftereachpresentation,etc.)
40minutes:StudentswilltaketurnspresentingtheirPrezipresentations.Aftereach
presentation,studentswillanswerquestionsfrompeersandbegivenfeedback.
PreAssessment:
Iwillinformallyconductmypreassessmentduringourdiscussiononthefirstday.Aswe
discuss,Iwillwritedownbitsofstudentconversationwhichshowsoral,conversational
Englishlanguageskills.Iwillalsogetanideaofwhattheyknowaboutthedifferentareasof
theschoolandfunctionsofeachareabyhavingthisconversation.Iwillseehowwellthey
areabletodrawontheirdownpriorexperiencesandcomparethemtothosetheyarehaving
atourschool.

Basedontherubric,Iwillbeabletoseewhichareasthestudentswasstrugglinginand
wherefurtherteachingneedstohappen.IwillbeabletodetermineexactlywhatIneedto
focusonformyminilessonsandoneononestudentconferencesinthefuture.
DifferentiatedInstructionalSupport
Studentswhoarestrugglingwiththeassignmentwillreceiveextensiveoneononeteacher
supportduringworktimetohelpunderstandtheelementsoftheassignmentaswellaslearn
academiclanguageandschoolvocabulary.Forstudentswithdisabilities,assignmentswill
bemodifiedaccordingtothetermsontheirIEP.
Advancedstudentscanfurthertheirknowledgebyprovidingmorecomplexanddetailed
informationintheirpresentation.Theymayexpandtheirtechnologyskillsbyexploringall
thedifferentoptionsPrezihastooffer.Theymayprovideadditionalvisualsorhandoutsfor
theirpresentation.
Extension
EachstudentwouldhavetheirownaccountatImaginelearning.com.Theywouldbeableto
accessthisaccountfromschoolorhome.Iftheydonothaveahomecomputerorinternet
service,ourschoolswilllendthemacomputerthathasinternetcapacity.Studentswould
usetheirImagineLearningaccountswhichfocusesonorallanguagethroughmodeling,
academicvocabulary,readingcomponents,listeningcomprehension,andgrammar.Each
accountalsoprovidesextensivesupportinthestudentsfirstlanguage,maximizingtheir
success.
HomeworkOptionsandHomeConnections
SpendingtimeontheirImagineLearningaccountswillalwaysserveasawaytoearnextra
pointsandprizesformeetinggoals.Besidestheseaccounts,studentswillnotdirectly
receivehomeworkfromme.However,Iwillsupportthestudentswithhomeworkgivenby
theirGenEdteachersduringassisttimeattheendoftheday.Ourdistrictrecentlystarteda
grantprogramcalled,WordsTakeWing.Thisprogramprovidesliteracysupportfor
SpanishspeakingfamiliesandgivesSpanishspeakingparentsstrategiesonthingstheycan
doathometosupporttheirchildslearning.Consideringmostofmyclassroompopulation
willbeSpanishspeaking,Iwouldstronglyencouragethestudentsandparentsparticipatein
thisfreeprogram.Iwouldalsotakeadvantageofthetimewehavewithourbilingual
academicsupportassistantsandusethemduringassisttimewheneverpossibletohelp
studentswiththeirwork.
InterdisciplinaryConnections
ThoughthefocuscontentareaofthisprojectisESL(Englishasasecondlanguage),this
assignmentwouldalsobecloselyintertwinedwithELA(EnglishLanguageArts)standards.
AsthestudentswriteuptheirPrezis,theyareworkingonpropergrammar,spellingand
writingconventions.TheyarealsousingtheirELAskillswhenconductingtheiroral
presentations.InadditiontoELA,thestudentswillalsobeconnectingthisprojectwith
conceptstaughtinsocialstudies,suchasthefunctionofgovernmentbuildings,aswellas
culturalexpectationsofthestudentsandstaffinschool.
