To the National University for Music in Bucarest:

I am honored to recommend Serban Nichifor to be promoted to Professor at your
institution.
Prof. Nichifor is an award-winning composer and I have been performing his music throughout the
United States for several years. A colleague of mine video recorded my performance of Prof.
Nichifors piece Executive for clarinet and piano. During this performance, several audience
members were caught on camera expressing genuine delight and musical appreciation at every
note of his piece. I enjoy watching this video because one woman in particular seems to
understand every meaning in each musical phrase and the joy on her face is a tribute to the
poignant and captivating quality of Serban Nichifors music.
I also performed his piece, Carnyx for solo clarinet at many clarinet events and conferences.
There, I received glowing reviews of his piece and many clarinetists requested Prof. Nichifors
contact information in order to acquire his piece. Many composers write for clarinet, however it
is quite rare that they write music that most players want to acquire right after hearing it in
concert. Serban Nichifor understands how to write for specific instruments in a way that makes
the performer shine with virtuosity.
Also, Serban Nichifor is a very gifted arranger and what is most appreciated by performers is
that he delivers commissions and arrangements quickly and efficiently, and always before the
deadline. I have worked with many composers and in most cases, I had to request changes to
make the work more idiomatic for my instrument. With Prof. Nichifor, the works are delivered
error-free, and ready to perform. In addition, Prof. Nichifor is very generous in offering some of
his best works free of charge online.
Last but not least, Serban Nichifor is a most generous and effective mentor. He graciously
accepted to mentor my graduate student from Miami University (Ohio), Anastasia Cetverikova. I
asked Anastasia to visit Mr. Nichifor in order to interview him so that we can publish an article
about him in the premier clarinet magazine, The Clarinet. The publisher agreed that Serban
Nichifor was an artist very worthy of being featured in our international magazine, therefore his
interview will appear sometime in the next year.
Serban Nichifor is a dedicated, generous, and hard-working artist, composer, mentor, and teacher.
He has already contributed immensely to the art of chamber music making, and my concerts are
always most appreciated when I include his music on my programs. The best demonstration of his
talent is that I always put his music first and last in my programs, which are the very best spots a

composer could with for. I urge your committee to promote Serban Nichifor to Professor of
Chamber Music and thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Michele Gingras
Distinguished Professor of Music (Clarinet)

Distinguished Scholar of the Graduate School

Michele Gingras is Distinguished Professor of Clarinet at Miami University (OH) where she was
named Curry Distinguished Educator and Distinguished Scholar of the Graduate Faculty. She

articles and reviews in numerous publications, translated a 650-page textbook, performed for over a
dozen ICA conferences, and authored two books: Clarinet Secrets52 Performance Strategies for
the Advanced Clarinetist, and More Clarinet Secrets100 Quick Tips for the Advanced Clarinetist
(scarecrowpress.com). She is a member of the Cincinnati Klezmer Project, Duo2go, and Miami3.

To Whom It May Concern:

As Artistic Director for the Composers Voice concert series based in New
York City, I have had many opportunities to work with Maestro Serban
Nichifor in a variety of capacities. Our program to promote and provide
opportunities for living composers from around the world has been greatly
enhanced by our relationship with Serban Nichifor.
As a promoter of new music Maestro Nichifor has organized concerts in
Romania in collaboration with Composers Voice. He has also helped us
establish relationships with organizations in Belgium, Italy and in the
United States. He has organized a call-for-scores honoring poet Eugene
Van Itterbeek (Belgium), performed by Violetta Stefanescu (Romania) and
Georgeta Stoleriu (Romania) received works by composers from Canada
France, Italy, Romania, Australia, Russia, Ireland, Hong Kong, Spain,
Sweden, Portugal, and throughout the United States.
Mr. Nichifor has also introduced established as well as up and coming
Romanian composers and performers to the rest of the world including
composer Veronica Anghelescu, violinist Daniel Mihai, and the string
quartet PASSIONE.
As a participating composer in our frequent calls-for-scores, Professor
Nichifors works have been regularly selected from amongst thousands of
submissions that we have received. His compositional style clearly
demonstrates a daring and creative mind, with no fear of melody nor of the
cutting edge. Each of his works, from his miniature Capriccio on a Theme
of Tom Jobim (Aguas de Marco) for solo violin to his masterpiece Old
Mormon Songs, are instantly identifiable as works composed with great
passion and by a master of his art.
I have had the greatest honor to have Serban Nichifor perform my works
on the cello. In addition to his enthusiastic professionalism, Maestro
Nichifors virtuosic cello playing is filled with the same passion that he puts
into his composing and everything else that he does!
I unreservedly recommend Maestro Serban Nichifor for this position at the
National University of Music Bucharest.

Sincerely,
Douglas DaSilva
