scientific Laboratory and other work in science, especially in chemistry and biology

how hard gravity is pulling on that object. Your Mass is the same wherever you are - on

Earth, on the moon, floating in space. But your Weight depends on how much gravity is
acting on you at the moment. You would Weight less on the moon than on Earth,

70. Alchemy
1. What is alchemy? What is the difference between alchemy and modern science?
71. Answer :
72. -Alchemy is an ancient practice shrouded in mystery and secrecy. Its practitioners mainly
sought to turn lead into gold, a quest that has captured the imaginations of people for
thousands of years. However, the goals of alchemy went far beyond simply creating some
golden nuggets.

74. -A difference between alchemy and modern science:
75. Alchemy is the predecessor to chemistry. Many discoveries by alchemist (especially their
instruments) were later used in chemistry. The key difference between the two is that
alchemy was more experimentation and had little bases on science (for instance they

would just randomly combine materials in the hopes of making a philosophers stone or
elixir of life), relying instead on random practice and mythology. While chemistry utilizes
both experimentation and scientific practices. In short chemistry is derived from its
primitive ancestor alchemy.

77.
2. Have you ever read a book or seen a film that dealt with alchemy?
78. Answer :
79. Not, i never read the book or watch the film
80.
3. Are there any famous alchemists you know?
81. Answer :
82. -Yes, he is Sir Isaac Newton
83.
Sir Isaac Newton is well known for his ground breaking work in the fields
of science and mathematics, but what is less well known is that he spent around 30 years
meticulously studying the mysterious art of alchemy. Sir Isaac Newton is most famous
for the quantification of gravitational attraction, discovering that white light is actually a
mixture of immutable spectral colors and the formulation of calculus. However it is less
well documented that Newton spent 30 years engaged in the study of the mysterious art
of alchemy, or as it was more commonly known then, chemistry.

85. 4. Read the following article. What do the words in bold mean?
86. -Medieval : of or relating to the Middle Ages
87. -Elements : a Part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or
characteristic.
88. -Precious metals : a solid material that valuable or has a high cost
89. -to cure : to relieve (a person or animal ) of the symptoms of a disease or condition.
90. -Prolong : to extend the time
91. -Subtance : a particular kind of matter with uniform properties
92. -Cliche : is an expression, ideas, opinion.
93. -Seeking to : attempt to find out
94. 5. What is the meaning of the expressions in italics?
95. -Turn lead into goal : Turn something unimportant into something precious
96. - elixir of immortality: is an herb legendary / mythical, that when drinking from a
certain cup, at certain times, giving the drinker eternal life and / or youthful
97.
98. Alchemy in the Middle Ages was a mixture of science, philosophy and mysticism. At the
heart ofmedieval alchemy was the idea that all matter was composed of four elements:
earth, air, fire andwater. With the right combination of elements, any substance on earth
might be formed. This

that the "transmutation" of one substance into another was possible; thus we have
the clich of
101.
medieval alchemists seeking to "turn lead into gold."
102.

103.
104.
105.
Goals:
106.
To find the "philosopher's stone," an elusive substance that was believed to make
possible thecreation of an elixir of immortality and the transmutation of common
substances into gold.
107.
108.
In the later Middle Ages, to use alchemy as a tool in the advancement of
medicine.
109.
110.
Achievements:
111.
Medieval alchemists produced hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, potash and
sodium carbonate.
112.
They were able to identify the elements arsenic, antimony, and bismuth.
113.
Through their experiments, medieval alchemists invented and developed
laboratory devices and procedures that are, in modified form, still used today.
114.
The practice of alchemy laid the foundation for the development of chemistry
as a scientific discipline.
115.
116.
6. What are the goals of modern chemistry?
117.
Answer :
118.
Chemists have two major goals. One is to find out the composition of
matter: to learn what elements are present in a given sample and in what percentage and
arrangement. This type of research is known as analysis. A second goal is to invent new
substances that replicate or that are
119.
120.
121.
122.
123.
There were often many symbols for an element. For a time, the astronomical
symbols of the planetswere used to denote the elements. However, as alchemists came to
be persecuted, particularly inmedieval times, secret symbols were invented. This led to a
great deal of confusion, so you willfind some overlap of symbols. The symbols were in
common use through the 17th century; someare still in use today.
124.
125.
7. Look at the following symbols that alchemists used. Can you guess which
elements they
126.
symbolize? One element can have several symbols.copper tin mercury gold silver

129.
130.
131.
8. What was the meaning of the word element in the Middle Ages? Is it different
now?
132.
- In the middle ages, element is like air, water, fire, and earth. But now, element is
chemical unsure the create a substance. Example : S, O, H ,N ,atc
133.
134.
9. What symbols do we use for elements today?
135.
-We use alphabet to describe elements as we see in periodic table of elements.
