Message from the JMC

Chairman

Abdulla Zaid Al-Talib

A lifetime engineering career taught me that success is not a mystery, it is a formula of the right
components. That is why I recognized success when I first came across the idea of the Qatar Mobility
Innovations Center (QMIC) which was, up to June 2012, known as the QU Wireless Innovations
Center (QUWIC).
All the components were there, a clear and focused vision, responding to a present need with
an innovative holistic approach. Soon after our debut, we started adding the final component, a
qualified, passionate and dedicated team.
Three years later, I look at the outcome and I can not but feel proud and excited. Proud to see
the results of this formula materializing in the shape of a strong diversified team leading projects
and initiatives that started to deliver innovations to the market place. I am also excited about the
potential in the years to come, as we help driving Qatar toward realizing its national 2030 vision.
Of course, a formula would work perfectly within the right circumstances, and there could be no
better place than Qatar when you aspire to innovate. Since the beginning, we have enjoyed the
state of the art facilities of QSTP and the full support of Qatar University. This unique positioning
allowed us to attract prestigious international research institutions to be our partners in success.
Within a very short time, we have been recognized and acknowledged by the leaders of industries
in Qatar as well as the major government organizations, who vested their trust in us to be their
innovations partner, and to help them create innovative solutions to their business challenges.
This annual report will guide you through our third year of success as we aspire and work for many
to come. I invite all of you to be part of this success, so that together we can leave a legacy of
knowledge to the coming generations.

Message from the Executive

Director (CEO)

Dr. Adnan Abu-Dayya

If one is to speak of achievements, then the story of QMIC is to be told. A story of vision, passion,
dedication and innovation. The story began with an idea that originated in Qatar University which
led to a meeting at the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), then developed to become a
leading national innovations platform with international reach and regional impact.
QMIC was founded as a response to an existing regional gap between academic research and
commercial solutions and applications. By focusing on innovations and knowledge acquisition
and creation, we aim to leverage the use of emerging mobility technologies to provide smart
customer-oriented solutions and applications to address national and business challenges, with a
focused vision to be a leader in translating home grown innovations into knowledge-ventures and
enterprises.
QMIC is committed to play a major role in contributing to the overall efforts to transfer Qatar into
a knowledge-based economy and building the capable human capital that can lead this transfer
forward.
QMIC is making steady progress towards meeting its objectives and delivering on its commitments
at all levels. A sample of the notable achievements include:
We have launched many projects and announced many branded initiatives to tackle the most
pressing national priorities and challenges of the different sectors (Transport, Environment, Utilities,
Health, etc) in Qatar and the region. Our leading Intelligent Transport Initiative is delivering solutions
and applications which are in early deployments in the Qatari market (Masarak).
We have built and are continuously expanding our international R&D network to benefit from the
experience and resources of similarly-minded applied research institutes of the world as well as our
local partners.

We have assembled a unique team that combines diverse international industry experience, with
deep local knowledge, and includes many fresh local graduates. In addition, we have launched an
internship program that allows students in Qatar to have a hands-on experience and develop the
skills needed to advance in an applied research and solution-minded environment.
We have created a new brand in the market place that is associated with innovations and leadingedge development and local technology customization
We are creating key Intellectual Property and platforms that are critical to our future growth
We are very active in the International scene through standards participation and contributions,
participating in interoperability testing of new global platforms, speaking at global events, and
publishing papers in reputable Journals and conferences
I would like to thank all of our stakeholders and partners for their trust and support, and I hope that
this report will give them a clear understanding of our activities, progress and achievements.
I would also like to thank QMICs team for all their hard work, genuine dedication and effort. Special
thanks are due to members of the QMIC Joint Management Committee for their continuous support
and helpful guidance.
Our deep gratitude and appreciation are due to the two chief champions of QMIC, Dr. Sheikha
Al-Misnad, President of Qatar University, and Dr. Tidu Maini, Executive Chairman of QSTP. Their
support and encouragement was instrumental to get us off the ground.
The QMIC story is still at its beginning with many more successful chapters to be written in order

MASARAK - Intelligent Transport Platform and Applications

Masarak is a suite of Intelligent Transportation, Road Safety and Logistics services fully developed
in Qatar. Masarak is one of QMICs smart living services built on top of QMICs Labeeb platform.
Masarak relies on collecting realtime traffic data from various sources like GPS devices fitted in
vehicles, bluetooth sensors, smart phones and other sources, then passes the traffic raw data
through the Labeeb platform to refine it, infuse it, and produce useful realtime traffic information.
This information is used by the many applications and services QMIC built as part of Masarak to
deliver to its users, such as Traffic Monitoring service (iTrafficMon), which delivers traffic realtime
information about congestion to users and the trip planning application (iTripPlanner), which helps
users plan their trips considering current traffic status on the road. Other applications developed by
QMIC as part of Masarak are iFleetManager, iDispatch, iChildSafety, and others. These services will
be available via mobile app stores like iTunes and Android app store, as well as through the web
portal, SMS messaging and other channels.
Masaraks website explains more about each of its applications at www.masarak.com.
A number of Masarak releases were completed in the year. A key milestone was achieved in June
2012 when QMIC made some of the Masarak services (iTrafficMon and iTripPlanner) available to
public beta users. iTrafficMon allows users to view realtime and historic traffic conditions (congestion

Connected Cars (CopITS)

Connected Cars refers to the concept where cars can communicate seamlessly with road side units
and other cars to deliver a new generation of safety applications and services.
QMIC is implementing a Connected Car (CopITS) platform that allows vehicles and road infrastructure
to wirelessly exchange data packets enabling new cooperative applications for road safety, traffic
efficiency and infotainment. This platform implements the latest draft of the architecture developed
within IEEE and ETSI and incorporates new enhancements in terms of communication protocols and
mechanisms, which outperform existing ones by enhancing data transfer for vehicle-to-vehicle V2V
and vehicle-to-infrastructure scenarios as well as the overall performance of the system. Simulation
studies using an integrated communication/traffic simulator have been conducted to investigate
important metrics like scalability, efficiency, and resilience of these mechanisms
Implemented system and applications have been successfully tested in-lab and demonstrated during
several events in Qatar using a real car (on-board unit) and a traffic light (roadside unit). Moreover,
QMICs Connected Car platform has been successfully tested in 2011 and 2012 Cooperative
