Executive Summary
2011/2012
By 2030, Qatar aims to be an advanced society capable of sustaining its development and providing
a high standard of living for its people. To realize this vision, the country is taking large steps towards
building a knowledge-based economy. In this regard, QMIC is playing a significant role in realizing
the Qatars 2030 vision.
In the following we review the progress made in a number of key areas.
QMICs Team
QMIC built a strong and ambitious team and processes that support innovations development and
delivery.
QMIC attracted a dedicated team of more than 50 members with diverse and rich industry experience
to lead the different initiatives and projects, and the team keeps growing to achieve the aggressive
objectives of the center. The QMIC dedicated team is supplemented by a network of local experts,
students, and faculty members from Qatar University and other educational institutions in Qatar.
In December 2011, the Center was awarded a certificate of High Commendation at the annual Gulf
Traffic Exhibition in Dubai for its Masarak initiative. Receiving the certificate from a global judging
panel was a great testament to the value of Masarak and its unique positioning in the market.
In April 2012, QMIC and Qatar Foundation launched the pilot for the Air Quality Monitoring Solution
(Hawaak) in Education City. The pilot execution includes the deployment of a few Hawaak Air
Quality Monitoring stations in designated outdoor locations in the Education City.
During June 2012 QMIC released its 4th major version of Masarak, and launched Masaraks Beta
version for testing. Two of its services, iTrafficMon and iTripPlanner were offered for Beta testers.
QMIC also delivered its detailed business plan for Masarak supported by a top industry firm who
audited and proofed the revenue projections for Masarak. The commercialization plan of Masarak is
underway and QMIC is on its way to commercialize Masarak services in Qatar .

Mobile Applications
Development
QMIC has a mobile application development program, which focuses on developing mobile
applications that address the needs of local and regional markets.
The mobile applications development strategy of QMIC has three components:
1- Stand alone applications targeting consumers and distributed through different app stores.
These applications are created to address the needs and requirements of the users in the region.
2- Applications which support and complement the different innovative solution initiatives and
projects of QMIC. In this case, mobile applications serve the purpose of being a delivery channel
for allowing users to access personalized information
3- Customized enterprise applications created for different entities to respond to their specific
requirements.
Mobile applications developments of 2011/2012:
Applied Research
QMIC is currently working on many applied research projects that are funded and supported by
Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) through its flagship NPRP program. In the following we
briefly review all current and newly awarded projects.
Technical papers have been published or in preparation and a patent application has been filed.
4. Bandwidth Management in Wireless Broadband Networks with Economic Considerations (20102013)
This research project is being carried out by QMIC in collaboration with Queens University in
Canada.
The project objective is to develop scientifically rigorous and practically deployable solutions to
support future service requirements. The research will tackle theory and design challenges in resource
allocation and bandwidth management, specifically for the large-scale integrated heterogeneous
networks that are expected to be prevalent in 4G mobile communication systems.
A number of technical papers have been published or in preparation.
7. A Context Aware Framework for Optimized Resource Management in Fourth Generation Wireless
Systems (2012 2015)
This research project is being carried out by QMIC in collaboration with the University of Houston
(USA) and the American University of Beirut.
This project exploits a new degree of freedom for boosting the performance of 4G wireless
systems by developing context-aware resource management techniques that optimize the users
performance jointly at the uplink and the downlink directions.
The project has been kicked off in April 2012 and a number of technical papers are under
preparation.
8. Remote Monitoring over Sustainable Wireless Networks (2012 2015)
This research project is being carried out by QMIC in collaboration with the UAE University and
Queens University in Canada.
This projects main objective is to demonstrate through a tangible proof-of-concept the viability of
a low-cost, solar-powered wireless network that is capable of handling a mission-critical application
such as remote monitoring. In this case, the network will facilitate monitoring mobile human subjects
fitted with a body area network tool.
The project has been kicked off in April 2012 and a number of technical papers are under
preparation.
10. CellCar: Advanced Cellular Technologies for Connected Cars (2013 2016)
This research project will be carried out by QMIC in collaboration with Technische Universitt
Braunschweig in Germany.
In this project, QMIC will study which of the car-related services will be suitable to be carried by
LTE and which services still require the use of IEEE802.11p. Latency, bandwidth, coverage, cost,
reliability, and security are examples of criteria to be considered in the study. QMIC will later develop
optimized protocols and mechanisms for data collection and dissemination using LTE combined with
802.11p. The basic tools to carry out this investigation are system simulations in realistic scenarios
using realistic LTE and 802.11p simulators.
The project will start later in 2012.
11. CoSMob: Cooperative Systems for Smart Mobility Services and Solutions (2013 2015)
This research project will be carried out by QMIC in collaboration with the Virginia Tech University
(USA).
New smart services and solutions are urgently needed that can inform drivers about traffic conditions
in (near) real-time. This project focuses on developing new concepts based on cooperative vehicular
systems. The addressed research topics will be related to three main phases. First phase involves
data collection using cooperative transport systems optimized solutions. Second phase involves
data real-time analysis to provide smart mobility services. The final phase is the redistribution and
dissemination of traffic/travel information through multiple delivery channels.
The project will start later in 2012.
The Centers
Rebrand
In June 2012, a new brand name and identity for the center was launched as the Qatar Mobility
Innovations Center (QMIC). This was revealed in a press conference for the rebrands soft launch.
The press conference was lead by Mr. Abdulla Al-Talib, Chairman of QMIC (formerly QUWIC) and
Dr. Adnan Abu-Dayya, Executive Director (CEO).
In the event, the Chairman, Mr. Abdulla Al-Talib said, We have been working on the rebranding
exercise for sometime now and we are very pleased to have concluded with choosing Qatar Mobility
Innovations Center (QMIC). Our goal is to have a brand name that reflects our unique positioning
and supports our objective in creating differentiated platforms and services that will translate into
knowledge-based ventures in Qatar.
Dr. Adnan Abu-Dayya said, The new brand name clearly demonstrates our national positioning,
re-emphasizes our focus on delivering innovations to the market, and demonstrates our focus on
the important and emerging mobility trends. For QMIC, mobility plays a role in two fronts. First,
QMIC will focus on the use of mobile and wireless technologies to create innovations. Secondly,
mobility represents a lifestyle that requires a new breed of solutions, business models, and services
that cater for this lifestyle.
Press Conference Launching QMICs new Brand Name & Identity June 2012
This marks an important and pivotal milestone for QMIC since it focuses on positioning itself as the
regional leader in mobility innovations.
