Canon Showcase

The 5D is no sloth when it comes to tracking fast moving subjects. I deliberately used a slow shutter speed to depict the intensity of the bulls as
they raced towards the finishing line. As with all Canon DLSRs, the best way to track a subject is to start autofocus tracking for at least one second
prior to shooting, as it will allow the AI servo to determine the speed and direction of your subject.

Beginning with this issue, AI will feature a show-
case for Canon aficionados. Subject matter may
range from beautiful images shot through Canon
gear, to technical details about the latest and
greatest technologies by Canon to empower the
digital photographer. On hand to spearhead this
new showcase will be none other than the Head
of Professional Imaging division Teoh Peng Kee,
or more affectionately known by Canon kaki as
Teoh. He has been taking photos for more than
20 years and has seen almost every SLR Canon
has ever produced.

Teoh is unique because apart from being a very


successful corporate person in Canon Malaysia,
he is also a very keen photography enthusiast
and a passionate gear head. Having served in
Canon for more than 16 years, his passion for
photography was allowed to grow with his pas-
sion for the job. Not many people are able to
combine hobby and career together, but Teoh
has managed to cope very well indeed. In the
coming issues Teoh will share his knowledge
with us on Canon’s design philosophies, new
breakthrough products etc, but right now we will
feature his other passion, travel photography.

On a recent trip to Bali, Teoh managed to cap-


ture the breathtaking beauty and charm of Bali
and its friendly inhabitants. Armed with a Canon
EOS 5D, EOS 30D, EF 24-105 f/4L IS, EF 70-200
f/2.8L IS and EF 16-35 f/2.8L, Teoh was ready
for any photo opportunity that may present itself.
“I used the full-frame 5D with both the 16-35L
and 24-105L IS lenses for most of my shoot-
ing, while the 70-200L was attached to the 1.6x
crop 30D for maximum focal length advantage”,

With the 5D being full frame, it means getting the full effect of a 15mm fisheye lens as it was intended to be by design. I found a tree with a hole in
the middle, and used the fisheye effect to create a sort of tunnel vision to describe the scene before me.

The 24-105L IS lens focus tracked beautifully on the 5D, allowing me to capture the bull race from a low angle perspective.

I wanted to test the 30D’s ability to follow the action in dusty conditions where lesser systems may not be able to deliver. Using a 70-200L
IS, I was able to stand a comfortable distance away while still being able to get up close and head on with the charging bulls. Under certain
conditions like in the fish eye shot on top, the full frame 5D was the obvious choice, but for maximum reach the 30D’s 1.6 crop allows for higher
magnification without loss of detail.

The traditional dancer was dancing around the fire. I sensed that he was about to do something and got ready with my camera to my eye. True
enough he kicked the sand in front of the flames and I instinctively fired off a few shots with the 5D. Anticipation is one of the key elements of situ-
ational shots like these, the other key element is to have a camera that you can handle like an extension of your vision.

It was a beautiful morning down by the lake. I wanted to create a surreal image so I set the white
balance to Tungsten to render a bluish cast. The 5D was able to focus perfectly even though the
light levels were still low
