Hello to each one of you. Happy Holidays as the
season is upon us. You know how often I hear people
talking as I am out and about. As I have gotten older
I may catch myself eaves dropping more just to hear
what everyday people are talking about. Try it. Listen to what the kids today are actually
talking about. It may be shocking to some. There are very helpful videos on youtube that
shows you (as a parent) need to know. A lot of the time I hear people saying, if I could
only get a way for a week...that would be nice. A week? Really? So, the more I thought
about why would just taking off from work be enough?.Is it to a destined location? Or
just relax at home, play with your kids and wife. Family time..Better enjoy the youth of
the young ones. Time goes by more and more quickly each year I grow older. What about
you? Tell me a good story. Id like to hear about them growing up days. Maybe for the
40,50s. What did you do for fun? The 60s and 70s kids like myself. I know we did for
fun. It was mostly sports of some sort for me. It was baseball in the spring and summer
and fall on your behind, cause its football time! We obviously had more snow in Cincinnati, Ohio where I grew up, the majority of my Catholic schooling, private school. Priest
and Nuns will do whatever it takes to rid you of unacceptable behavior, trust me. Its not
always saying prayers..lol Well, lets say I felt the power of Prayer.
Anyway, so back to my one question to be able to get away. What about sailing off to
another country? Or does the fear of pirates, (yes Somolia and others floating the seas are
called Pirates). They are not good people to come across in open waters. How Hard Is
It to Sail the Globe Alone These Days? I wondered how long away is other islands?
Of all the threats that face solo circumnavigators, one of the greatest may be the human
mind. . Think about that. What is lurking below you? Every moment, you are thinking
too much. There is a natural madness that fills the hearts of men and women when they
gaze upon the vastness of the sea. I'm not speaking of all, or even most people, of course,
but of a select few who believe, deep in their hearts, that the expanse of salty blue exists
for one reason: "to be sailed over.". I dont feel that type of need, what if I did?
Ever since Magellan's voyage showed that it was possible to sail around the world in one
go, mariners from nearly every continent have braved attempts of their own. Starting in
1894, a special breed cast off to claim the prize: solo navigators. Joshua Slocum, the first
person to sail around the world on his own, embarked on a three-year long voyage.
Slocum's writing reveals the inner workings of a man who takes pride in his abilities as a
sailor, one who respects the sea, and is confident in his knowledge. Qualities of independence, determination and discipline are often attributed to those who make the journey
alone. After all, it's not an easy one. Of all the threats that face solo circumnavigators, one
of the greatest may be the human mind. Journeys can easily last 500 or even 1,000, days,
and the silence of solitude can be a breeding ground for all sorts of insanity. In 1969,
Donald Crowhurst, after spending several months sailing around the Atlantic, slipped into
depression and abandoned ship. And while many have been able to handle their thoughts
during the voyage, they often come up with interesting tactics to stay above the breakers.
Solo circumnavigators often find themselves talking to their boats, singing to spiders and
sea animals, and otherwise populating their world with characters large and small.
One modern day circumnavigator, Donna Lange, named her boat Inspired Insanity.
Luckily, she is well equipped for the task at hand: "Sailing is a philosophical journey that
allows me to become immersed in nature and focus on my work and myself. I want an
opportunity to share my experiences through songwriting and need this extended time to
do so," she explained in an interview with Sail Magazine. Lange uses her journeys as a
way to spread awareness of environmental issues as well as explore her own consciousness.
Today's sailboats can come with all sorts of advanced electronics teams from the UK
are attempting to sail a boat across the Atlantic by remote control. This gives many solo
circumnavigators the option to stay connected to the world as sail email, social media
and other luxuries are often along for the ride. While this may contradict the romanticized
vision of adventure that many of us have, it also makes the journey more achievable for
many individuals. And there are some, like Lange, who avoid such connection for a more
pure experience. While you might think that circumnavigation is reserved for those in the
peak of their lives, several sailors buck that trend. Lange is a grandmother herself, currently on her eighth voyage. Meanwhile, the world's oldest solo circumnavigator recently
reached port after a harrowing journey. Minoru Saito, a 77-year old Japanese man, battled
tsunamis, icebergs and an emergency hernia operation over the course of 1,080 days.
While he missed the cherry blossoms of his homeland, he reported feeling healthy in body
and mind, ready for the next adventure. On the other end, a number of teens have made
the journey. The youngest, Laura Dekker, wanted to embark at age 14, but lengthy court
battles with the Dutch government delayed her trip for two years. Still, she ended up setting the record for youngest solo circumnavigation when she came into the St. Maarten
harbor at age 16. In her journal, Dekker wrote of talking to her boat, more comfortable
alone in the middle of the sea than anywhere else. I bet coming back to a civilized society
would take over sometimes, what about an un-civilized chaotic scene? Vets do. God Bless

Breakfast cooked according to your order will be offered from 7AM until 11 AM on
Saturday December 5, 2015 in the Parish Hall at St. Agathas Episcopal Church (150
Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs). Pancakes, eggs, grits or home fries, sausage or bacon,
sausage gravy on toast or biscuit, juice, milk or coffee will be on the menu. Also offered are Healthy Choice selections (yogurt or oatmeal, fruit or juice, poached eggs, low
calorie muffin or toast, etc.). You can expect great food, great service and a smile!
Cost for the breakfast is $7.25 for adults and $4.00 for children under 10. Take-outs
are available if you cant stay and talk awhile. Reservations are available but not at all
necessary, unless you have a large group or minimum time. Call 850-830-7663.

COPE Center Disaster Case Management Program Announces

Disaster Repair Complete in Freeport Home
The COPE Center Disaster Case Management Program (DCMP) and the Okaloosa/Walton Long Term Recovery Organization is proud of the work being accomplished in our community. On Wednesday, November 18th, in conjunction
with a Mennonite Disaster Services (MDS) team, a Project Completion Ceremony
was held at a home in Freeport. The home had been damaged during the storms
and flooding in Spring of 2014. The homeowner had been living solely in the top
floor of her home without a kitchen. During the ceremony, the MDS team presented the homeowner with an afghan and plaque and the DCMP team presented a
quilt to commemorate the event. Russ Barley, Mayor of Freeport, and Chairman
of the Okaloosa/Walton Long Term Recovery Organization, Russell Beaty, were
also in attendance.
The COPE DCMP provided case management and brought together resources to
repair the home and make it safe, sanitary, and secure. The Okaloosa/Walton
Long Term Recovery Organization provided funding for the construction materials necessary, supplemented by the homeowner, and a team from Mennonite Disaster Services spent almost 800 volunteer hours on the project. The homeowner says

COPE Center officially became the provider of the Volunteer Florida Disaster
Case Management Program for Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton and
Jackson County in April of 2015. The program, sponsored by Volunteer Florida
and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, assists those affected by the
storms and flooding in Spring of 2014. For more information about the DCMP,

Saved us money: Rubio wins conservative cred

for ObamaCare change
Marco Rubio's Republican presidential bid is getting a surprisingly big boost
from a little-known legislative tweak he helped tuck into last year's spending bill
one that ObamaCare critics are crediting with shielding taxpayers from jittery
health insurance companies that may be eyeing shaky bottom lines.
The provision, similar to one hes pushing this year, prohibits billion-dollar bailouts for private insurers under the Affordable Care Act.
It's now being touted by Rubios
camp and others as a key factor that
is protecting taxpayer dollars -while also disrupting the law itself.
He saved us money on ObamaCare
where others have simply wanted to
repeal it, Issa told Fox News. He
has already saved $2.5 billion by
eliminating an unreasonable backstop by the taxpayers for a
failed program. The program
Rubio targeted is known as risk
corridors pricy provisions that
allow the government to use taxpayer dollars to compensate insurance companies
for losses suffered during the first few years of ObamaCare.
In 2013, the senator pushed legislation to repeal the risk corridor provision.
Though the standalone bill failed, he had a hand in getting a rider into the mustpass omnibus federal spending bill last year that prevents the government from
making up shortfalls in the program by tapping other funds.
Last year, insurers asked for nearly $2.87 billion in government payments from
the program; though the Department of Health and Human Services had only
$362 million available. Issa and others say the rider, then, helped save $2.5 billion.
Concern about a backstop for losses has been renewed amid continuing financial
uncertainty in the market -- which has led to more than a dozen folded co-ops
and prompted UnitedHealth, the countrys largest insurer, to threaten to pull out
of the exchanges next year.

Can Being Lonely Shorten Your Life?

Being lonely can trigger cellular changes in your body that increase your
chances of getting ill and not living as long as you could have, according
to a new study.
The risk applies to older people, past research suggests.
A leading charity for people over 60 in the United Kingdom says the
findings underline the importance of treating loneliness as a major health
problem.
In the new study, researchers from the University of Chicago and the
University of California found that loneliness can trigger the body's fight
-or-flight response, which can affect the production of white blood cells
and eventually undermine the immune system.
They based their research on 141 older people enrolled in a U.S. study
on aging and social relations, and on an examination of lonely rhesus
macaque monkeys, a highly social species of primates. The researchers
say that, in essence, lonely people have a weaker immune system and
higher levels of inflammation than people who aren't lonely. Their health
is also more vulnerable because they feel threatened.
The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences. "Contrary to what many people think, loneliness is not a normal part of aging, and it not only makes life miserable, it can have a serious impact on your physical and mental health too,. Research shows
that more than a million older people say they haven't spoken to a friend,
neighbor or family member for over a month, and unless we act, our
rapidly aging population means well see ever greater numbers of lonely
older people.
...There is something that everyone can do to help, even if its checking
in on older neighbors, relatives, and friends over the festive season and
year round,. Are You Stressed? When youre facing something you
dont want to do, it can make you feel tense. Putting off that dreaded
chore is a way to get some short-term relief. The downside is that youll
still have to tackle your task in the future, which may make you feel
guilty or angry -- and cause your stress to rise more. If the tension's bad
enough to keep you from getting things done, you might notice it affects
you in other ways, too, like:
Trouble sleeping
Racing thoughts
Lack of energy or trouble focusing
Headaches or muscle tension
Keep your mood in check with regular exercise, limit alcohol and
caffeine (which can make stress worse), and get enough sleep. Talk to a
friend or counselor about whats on your mind, too.

Hello. I wanted to tell you that the story you posted

about what drugs these kids are trying, it made me
search my house. I never thought much about it. No
one wants to think it could be yours, right?
I discovered a few things by snooping about in my
kids room. That is in MY HOUSE.
I was shocked to discover 3 pills of different colors
and a small amount of weed and a pipe. I waited till
he got home from school and I wore his ASS out.
From yelling to showing him to watch video on Facts
about Drugs. No one knows what drugs are used to
make Meth, Crack, Ice, etc. The people who make it
are junkies! Not scientist or FDA controlled, of
course not.
Parents, you know think you trust your kids today. I
wont name names. But its in Middle School and
High School on both ends of Walton county. The
Elders need to safe guard their pills from these kids
they eat anything to see what it will Feel like?
I appreciate you and your format. I get a New Edition each time it comes out. You never know what
you may have found or info. To come up with. You
print it, the sometimes ugly, hard, cold Truth.

Keep your detective around another month. I bet he

There are way too many of us regular folks that
really Love that FREEPORT has a NEWSpaper at all.
Its a shame when the people who are violators get
caught, then think it makes them better by spreading
rumors and lies. Consider the source people.
This Man (Frank) has run this successfully enough
to still be with us representing events, meetings,
articles of interest and facts, for over 7 years now. We
all should chip in to protect one of the few things we
have to brag about. The Emerald Star News has made

Hold Workshop Regarding
Portland Large Scale Amendment
Walton County BCC District 1 Commissioner Bill Chapman will be hosting a
public workshop called Portland Large
Scale Amendment Workshop on
December 3, 2015 at 6:00 pm at the
Portland Community Center, 88 Site C-6
Road regarding the Portland Large Scale
Amendment.
The workshop is being held to review
those properties in the Portland area that
were designated as General Commercial when the Future Land Use Map
(FLUM) was adopted in 1996.
A number of the properties are residential in nature and have been for many
years. A residential use is inconsistent
with the goals and objectives of the
Countys Comprehensive Plan Land Use
Element designation of General Commercial.
Commissioner Chapman has requested
to hold this workshop so all property
owners have a chance to discuss the
Portland LSA and have the ability to ask
questions.
If you live in these areas you would be
wise to hear of desired changes for zoning. It will affect your home values.
Land change may mean even more.

the highest bidder during this festive
holiday fundraiser for Alaqua.

Turkey snubs President Obama, calling out his blatant HYPOCRISY
President Obama does have a few ideas to stop ISIS that go beyond climate change. But apparently his influence in the
world to direct strategy isnt quite a grand as hed imagined, after all despite all that hes done to lift the U.S. image
across the globe (just in case you werent sure, that IS sarcasm). Check out how Turkey responded to Obamas demands
that they close its border with Syria to end the influx of new Islamic State fighters heading into Syria and Iraq.
President Barack Obama wants Turkey to close its 60-mile-long border with Syria to end the influx of new Islamic State
fighters pouring into Syria and Iraq. If Turkey acquiesces to Obamas demands, no entry points will remain between the
two countries. The entire border is 550 miles long, The Wall Street Journal reports.
But a Turkish official quickly pointed out to The Wall Street Journal the irony in Washingtons call to close off the border, given the U.S. is completely unable to stop flows in
and out of Mexico. n response, a U.S. official said, If we were at war with Mexico, wed close that border.
Of course, the Obama administration conveniently ignores the fact that refugees possibly and maybe even likely including terrorists in their midst along with illegal
aliens (whom, to be clear, Im NOT equating with terrorists) continue to cross our border with Mexico. And liberals and others poke fun at the likes of Donald Trump for
suggesting hardcore means to close it off. The bottom line is the Obama administration
CHOOSES to keep our own border porous, even while demanding another sovereign
country close its own. Talk about arrogance but what else do you expect from our dear president?
Tens of thousands of fighters use Turkey as a gateway to ISIS-controlled territory. If the border closes down completely,
ISIS will suffer a serious blow in terms of recruitment.
While the U.S. has allowed Turkey to beg off closing the last section of the border because of feasibility concerns, with
the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, a whole new wave of pressure is coming from Washington to get the job done.
The game has changed. Enough is enough. The border needs to be sealed, an Obama administration official told The
Wall Street Journal. This is an international threat, and its all coming out of Syria and its coming through Turkish
territory. Apparently, the Obama administration is convinced that strong borders work, at least in some cases, estimating that about 30,000 troops are needed to block ISIS movements.
Yep, strong borders work but only when you WANT them to. Turkish officials confirmed that removing ISIS from the
border is a chief concern, but added Turkey doesnt need patronizing reminders.
Turkey is determined to clean Daesh from the 98 kilometers of border between Kilis and Jarabulus, a senior Turkish
government official told The Wall Street Journal. There is no need to receive any kind of warning or advice from anyone, including our U.S. partners.

How to stay healthy for the holidays
The Christmas season brings people together through family gatherings, office parties and gettogethers with friends. Most of us will find it difficult to avoid holiday crowds as we go to movies, attend Christmas concerts or go shopping. The chilly weather will also drive more people inside together.
With so much human contact, the risk of contracting colds and influenza are greatly increased.
The best way to fight these germs is by washing your hands often and avoiding touching your
mouth, nose and eyes, especially in public places. Germs hide in plain sight on door knobs, handrails, public food counters and chairs, public phones and shopping carts. It is a good idea to take
along some anti-bacterial wipes and use them whenever possible. Think of it as a kind of germ
warfare and take precautions to guard yourself and your family.
Wherever people gather or congregate during the Christmas season, food will likely be served.
When at parties, avoid common bowls of nuts, trail mix, potato chips or any food that allows people to reach in and grab with their fingers. Be careful when using common serving spoons or ladles, too.
When cooking at home, the main thing to remember is how to keep leftovers safe. Leftovers can
be kept for three to four days in the refrigerator. After that, the risk of food poisoning increases.
Food poisoning, also called food-borne illness, is caused by harmful bacteria in contaminated
food. Because bacteria typically do not change the taste, smell or look of food, it is sometimes
difficult to know whether a food is dangerous to eat. The best rule is: when in doubt, throw it out.
To practice food safety, quickly refrigerate perishable foods, such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy
and eggs do not let them sit more than two hours at typical room temperature or more than one
hour at temperatures above 90 F (32 C). Uncooked foods, such as cold salads or sandwiches, also
should be eaten or refrigerated promptly. The goal is to minimize the time a food is in the "danger
zone" between 40 and 140 F when bacteria can quickly multiply.
When eating leftovers, reheat them on the stove, in the oven or in the microwave until the internal temperature reaches 165 F. Slow cookers and chafing dishes aren't recommended for reheating
leftovers because they do not get hot enough to
kill bacteria.

Andrew Hallinan put a sign outside his gun store that
said, Muslim Free Zone. When CAIR (Council on
American-Islamic Relations) heard of this, they sued
him.
U.S. Judge Beth Bloom ruled Hallinan completely
within his first amendment right to make the statements
he made and sell guns to who he wanted to. Hallinan
announced, We are in battle, patriots, but not only with
Islamic extremism. Were also in battle against extreme
political correctness that threatens our lives, because if
we cant call evil, evil for fear of offending people, then
we cant really defeat our enemies.
We couldnt agree more. The American Freedom Law
Center later released a statement completely in favor of
Hallinan. As our motion and now the courts ruling
make clear, CAIRs lawsuit was patently frivolous if not
outright dangerous. No firearms dealer or gun range
owner for that matter should be required to sell weapons
to or train anyone that the dealer or owner has reason to
believe is a terrorist threat. We all have a civic responsibility to prevent the next terrorist attack.
CAIR was clearly in the wrong to bring this case to
court. Do you think Hallinan is a patriot for trying to
protect our country from terrorists?

Obama's motorcade for climate

change talks costing $784,825
Car service, hotels, and accommodations for the president
and other administration officials to attend climate change
talks in Paris are costing taxpayers nearly $2 million, according to government contracts.
The COP21 meeting of global leaders, which President
Obama said is a powerful rebuke to terrorists, began on
Monday. Representatives from 195 countries traveled to
Paris, burning 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide for the
United Nations conference that is seeking to reduce global
emissions.
The tab for Obamas motorcade alone totals $784,825. The
State Department issued a $407,868 contract to Biribin
Limousines, an international chauffeur service, for vehicles for the presidents security detail.
No Sustainability Included, the document states under a
section for contract clauses.
Numerous other contracts for passenger vehicle rentals,
including $9,042 for accompanying press, totaled
$376,957.
Taxpayers were also billed $100,216 to book hotel accommodations for the presidents stay. Hotel rooms and cell
phones for the U.S. Secret Service traveling with the president cost $16,642 and $4,034, respectively.

wed advise. After all, this is the state where Chuck Norris

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has made sure that Syrian refugees
dont mess with Texas, announcing that the Lone Star State
will not be taking any more in and going so far as to prohibit
agencies within the state from lending assistance to the
refugees. However, some liberals didnt get the message,
which is why the state is threatening to sue and revoke funding
from independent agencies that continue to bring in Syrian
refugees, I must ask that you fulfill your statutory duty to
conduct your activities in close cooperation and advance
consultation with the State of Texas pursuant to section 1522
of Title 8 of the United States Code, wrote in a letter to the
