Before working on electrical system obtain radio security code and disconnect battery
ground strap.
Note
Adjust headlights after performing any work to the headlight system.

Headlight system components, removing/installing

- Remove screws -arrow- and remove front panel

Remove screws -arrows- and pull out headlight housing from front
Disconnect wire connectors from housing
Install in reverse sequence
Check headlight aim and adjust if necessary

Halogen bulb, removing

- Remove wire connector from halogen bulb


- Detach spring clip 3 from lugs 2 and swing down
- Pull bulb from reflector housing
Halogen bulb, installing
CAUTION!
DO NOT touch the glass on the Halogen bulb. Fingerprints will evaporate when the bulb
gets hot and cause the headlight reflector surface to dim.
- Insert bulb into reflector housing so that tabs on bulb align with notches in housing
- Reattach spring clip 3 onto lugs 2
- Reinstall wire connector
- Check headlight aim and adjust if necessary

Headlights, adjusting

- Adjust headlights by turning adjusters (pinions) through openings 1 and 2 with a


Phillips head screwdriver (left headlight shown in illustration)

Note
Adjust the right headlight in the same manner.

Turn signal/parking light bulb

Twist socket in direction indicated -arrow- and remove from housing


Remove bulb from socket
Install in reverse sequence
Twist socket in opposite direction of arrow to secure

Turn signal/parking light housing

- Remove headlight housing,

- Push locking tab -arrow- in direction indicated and slide turn signal/parking light
housing forward from headlight housing
- Install in reverse sequence

Cover frame, removing

- Carefully lift expansion pin -4- from clip -3-.


- Pull clip -3- out and pull cover frame -2- off bumper cover -1-.
Foglight, removing/adjusting

1 - Screws
2 - Height adjustment screw (lateral adj. not possible)

Foglight bulb, removing/installing

Pull cover -1- off housing.


Disconnect ground connector -2- and connector -3-.
Release spring wire clip -4- and swing out.
Remove (pull) bulb with holder out of housing.
Do not touch glass when installing a new H3 Halogen bulb (12 V, 55W)
Insert a new bulb so that the recess in the bulb holder aligns with housing guide tab -5-.

- Lift cover with horn plate from below and pull off steering wheel in direction of arrow.

- Pull off wiring connectors.
- Press retaining lugs in direction of arrows and remove contact plate A.
Note
The horn plate consists of two uninsulated contact plates -A and B- which will be connected by
pressing on the cover.

The positive voltage for operating the horn is supplied via a spring contact on the turn signal
switch and a slip ring
-arrow- under the steering wheel.
Grease with G 000400.

- Remove steering wheel.
- Remove screws -arrows-.
- Disconnect connector to turn signal and windshield wiper switch.
- Remove turn signal and windshield wiper switch from the steering column.

- Remove steering column switch.
- Remove lock washer, spring and contact ring from steering column.
- Remove steering lock housing bolts.
- Pull steering lock housing off column tube and steering column.

Installing
- Slide steering lock housing onto steering column.
- Drive contact ring, spring and lock washer onto steering column with tool VW 420 -1.
Note
If the steering column is not projecting fully out of the column tube, pull steering column out
further by turning on hex nut.

- Removing steering lock housing

- Mark steering lock housing for drilling


a- 12 mm (0.5 in.)
b -10 mm (0.4 in.)
- Drill steering lock housing (approx. 3 mm) (0.12 in), until the lock cylinder spring is
evident (hole depth, approx. 3 mm) (0.12 in).
- Using opposite end of drill compress lock spring and pull out lock cylinder.
Installing
- Push lock cylinder into steering lock housing.
- By slightly turning key in lock cylinder it can be pushed onto the stop.

Steering column switches, wire routing

If any of the steering column switches (windshield Wiper, turn signal, cruise control, ignition, etc.)
are removed/installed, the switch wires must be properly re-routed against the steering column.
CAUTION!
Routing wires incorrectly on steering column may cause wire damage and lead to
inoperative components, shorts/grounds and blown fuses.
- Route wires against side of steering column
- DO NOT route wires between steering column and knee bar -arrow- If necessary, fasten wires with tie-wrap

Steering column switch trim

Trim component has a locating lug

The turn signal cover plate has locating notches


Note
Only these parts which prevent turning will be supplied as spare parts. On turn signal switches
without notches, the lugs must be removed.
