Mental Illness in Popular Media
: Essays on the
Representations of Disorders.

Summary
This article is about the portrayal
of mental illness by the media.
This is including both fiction and
non-fiction formats. Most of the
characters are depicted to be very
violent. They are also supposed to
be viewed as funny and not to
be taken seriously. The news view
of the mentally ill isnt good
either. The article says, news
representations of mental illness
echo those found in the
entertainment media and are
largely inaccurate and negative.
This causes people to get the
wrong idea about mental illness.
They can be functional in
society. Most of them arent
dangerous at all.
This article discusses how the
media in the UK has been trying
to get better at covering mental
illness. They used to use pretty
insensitive headlines like The
Suns Bonkers Bruno Locked
Up. The use of the words such
as Bonkers, nuts, and
psycho are examples of the bad
language the media uses. The
media have acknowledged this
problem and are trying get better.
The Sun did change their headline
to Sad Bruno in Mental Home.
Although, there is evidence that
the terminology has gotten worse
since 1997 according to the
article.
This book is a collection of essays
on mental illness public view. The
illnesses range from facial ticks to
schizophrenia. From the media,
movies, cartoons. How are
peoples views of mental illness
affected by these formats? I have
not gotten this book yet and no

Thoughts
This, honestly, doesnt
surprise me. As a kid
growing up in the US,
I have watched a ton
of tv. I cant count the
amount of times I have
seen a character named
Crazy Steve or
something like that. At
the time, I thought that
was funny. Of course I
did along with all of
my sisters. This
stereotyping is
disgusting and it
obviously cant be
good for the treatment
of mentally ill people.
This article is
refreshing to hear. At
least the media is
trying to get better at
it. I am sad to see that
the problem has gotten
worse since 1997 but I
do appreciate the fact
that the news want to
be more sensitive.
Hopefully, this trend
will continue.

This book is great. It is

just what I need. As
soon as I get it I will
be able to react to it.
You know, I havent
read it yet. I have
claimed it but, I dont
have it. This review is

this is not a fabrication. I will give

a better summary of this book
better.
This article is about the conditions
of mental illness in the media in
1997. The problem is still
evidently a problem. Most people
get their information about mental
illness from television. Even
though, the image of mental
illness is pretty bad. People say
that mentally ill characters on tv
are seen as a bad character most
of the time according to the
article. That is not a good image
for anybody on tv. It also says
that, according to the media, the
mentally ill have a negative
impact on society around them.
Along with the movie, the pbs
website provided a timeline about
the history of mental illness
treatment. It started as late as 400
BC. I didnt choose to use that
information because its not really
important. It is surprising that it
has that far back, though! It talks
about people like Phillipe Pinel
and Dorothea Dix. These people I
will use in my paper. The movie
the timeline is based on is about
a man named John Nash living
with a mental illness. He later won
a Nobel Prize in Economics. This
helps prove that mentally ill
people can help out society.

This article really emphasizes that

mental illness is treatable. Unlike
what the media portrays. This
causes the public to view the
mentally ill negatively. Illnesses
such as depression, anxiety, and
drug addiction are unattractive to
potential employers, housing, and
medical care. This can also cause
social isolation, according to the

to be continued.

I read the article above

and thought that was
bad. Apparently it was
a lot worse back in
1997. At least there
was some
improvement but those
statistics are
disgusting! It still isnt
good enough but still!
71.2% of mentally ill
people are portrayed as
violent or have killed
someone. WHAT!?
Come on, with that.
This is extremely
useful and interesting.
Who doesnt want to
know what the Greeks
thought of mental
illness. There is a
major point this movie
makes, though. Its
that anybody can make
it no matter your
disabilities. Mental
illness isnt a major
problem that can hold
you back. This goes
against what a lot of
people think about the
mentally ill, which is
great! These people
can be great people.
This didnt tell me
anything new. Just
gave me more usable
facts and statistics for
my paper. I have
become saddened by
all of this but there is a
glimmer of hope
apparently. I just wish
that it would get better

article. This article also analyzed

certain media outlets views on the
mentally ill. Of course the results
came out bad.

sooner.

The National Institute of Medicine

conducted an investigation on how
the mentally ills health care is.
They say that there are many
problems. The millions of
substance abusers are being
mistreated. The media is
influencing the public on some
false information. The usual I have
been telling you. This is different
because it is from an official US
Institute. These are facts, not lies!
They state that quality care for
these people is essential. There
needs to be an improvement.
This is another article on how the
media damages the publics image
of the mentally ill. It discusses
several myths that people believe
thanks to the media. For instance,
the mentally ill cannot be treated.
Another is that they are all
unpredictable and violent. This is
untrue. Many of the mentally ill
have lives and a job. There is no
such thing as a chemical
imbalance for depression and
mental health doctors are not all
the same. These ideas were/are
driven by the media and is very
detrimental to the image of the
mentally ill.

This is pretty selfexplanatory. Just look

at the title. They do
explain on some ways
to improve upon it. Its
not really that
surprising to me
anymore. This is
terrible stuff to read
over and over.

Jarune Uwujaren in this article

talks about how the media
influences how people think of the
mentally ill. In other words they
produce a stigma. They make
them seem like dangerous people.
Use words like psycho and

This again isnt

anything new. I just
got some more usable
quotes from this

not a bad word to use.

This is a great article I

can use. It has a lot of
good facts and gives a
lot of information that
I will be using for my
paper. How can I react
to articles like this
anymore when they all
say pretty much the
same thing? The media
is misrepresenting the
mentally ill. They
present different facts
but the same result.

Schizo. Things like that. There

are a ton of clichs that
Hollywood uses too. Stalking
girlfriends, crazy killers, etc. We
have all seen these things. Most
people get a wrong Idea about
certain mental illnesses. For
instance most Americans think
schizophrenics are violent. Not
true.
The NAMI wrote this article to
say that Abraham Lincoln had a
mental illness. Yes, THE Abraham
Lincoln. He allegedly suffered
from depression. This was based
on what people have said about
him and based on some written
documents describing Lincoln.
This is great because this supports
the fact that people w/ mental
illness can contribute to society.
An American President had a
mental illness. Not a pretty one at
that!

I have never heard/said

anything like that!

This is really
surprising. Whenever I
thought of Abraham
Lincoln I thought of
this jolly, wise man
who had big dreams.
This is probably
wrong, now. It does
not surprise me that a
mentally ill person
helped society in some
way but I didnt
imagine one to be a
President! Not even
arguably one of the
most influential
president this nation
has ever seen! That is
amazing! This puts the
discrimination into
even more perspective
of how horrible it is!
