Do we have a reason to celebrate?

Undelivered copies, change

should be addressed to:

IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, GOD SPOKE CLEARLY

TO THE ISRAELITES BY INSTRUCTING THEM TO
CELEBRATE. WHY? So they would not simply carry
on with daily life, but would purposely pause, ref lect
on Gods hand in their lives, rejoice, and be merry!
Jesus also used the act of celebrating in His parable
of the prodigal son.

As a mission, we pause to celebrate the completion of this summers camp

season. We have prayed, we have given, we have organized and planned, we
have wondered, doubted, worried, and then prayed again and again. Looking
back on the 2015 summer camp season, we rejoice how God used One Hope
Canadas camps and ministries to present the Gospel to thousands of children.
Hundreds committed their lives to Jesus.
Do we have a reason to celebrate? I say, Yes!
ABOUT THE CHAIRMAN
Ferdi has been serving on the National Board since 1995 and became the Chair in 2000.
As a young adult, he volunteered at a children's camp, and that is where he heard the
message of salvation for the first time. He believes that ministry to children is possibly
the most important Christian ministry: children need to hear about God.

DON'T LET GO. HOLD ON. JOY WILL COME.

SETTLE DOWN, TRUST HIM ALONE AND CARRY ON.

Not only is celebrate the theme of this edition
of our magazine, it is the theme of this chapter
of my life! As the new Ontario Field Director,
my wife, Bev, and I celebrate One Hope Canada,
the Lord, and all that He has done!
Three years ago, the Lord carried Bev and I off
into exile. Jeremiah 29:4-8 was Gods message
to us to settle down, to trust Him alone and
to carry on. Psalm 13:1 became my sorrowful
mantra How long, O Lord? Will you forget
me forever?

After a lengthy exile, today we lift up Psalm

126 , When the Lord brought back the captives
to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our
mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues
with songs of joy...the Lord has done great
things for us, and we are filled with joy.
If you are going through a hardship, dont let
go; hold on; joy will come, and you, you WILL
celebrate again!

MY

hen I was nine, my mother, Gretta, died and everything was different without her. Our house seemed so
empty at times. I was the only kid I knew who wore a key
around her neckeveryone else had a mom to welcome
them home after school. I let myself into the empty house and waited
for more than an hour before Dad came home from work.

Some days, I tried to make supper

and in the middle of stirring the
creamed corn, would get distracted.
Dad sometimes got burned corn and
potatoes, but he never complained.
He just appreciated my trying.
While losing Mom was hard, and
though I didnt have siblings, I was
blessed with an absolutely wonderful
father. He was so kind and I knew he
would always keep me safe. I knew
he needed a wife and I needed a
mother, so I simply asked God to
send us someone.
A year after Mom died, I was
invited by friends to Gimli Bible
Camp. It was my first time at camp;
I was so excited to travel by bus with
friends! As we tumbled out of the

bus, we were greeted by a lady with

a sweet smile. She reminded me of
my mother and I was immediately
attracted to her. I discovered this
pretty woman wasnt married, and
my ten-year-old heart was thrilled!
I followed her around all week, and
didnt leave camp before taking her
picture and getting her address.
At home, I waited for the right
moment. One night after supper I
showed Dad the picture and told
him, Dad, this is the lady I want for
my new mom. Here is her address.
Now you write to her. Being the
shy man he was (it took years to get
up the courage to ask Mom to marry
him), he responded with a decided,

Servanthood
As the newest staff member, I
can attest to the cohesiveness of the
summer staff and their dedication
to serve their Saviour as a team.
They served with happy hearts
even when they were short on
sleep. They interacted with their
campers in a positive manner,
living their faith out loud. It did
my heart good to see staff chatting
with campers as they walked from
place to place. One week of doing

Teaching Teacher
In a Grade 7/8 religion class,
the students asked the teacher
why bad things happen. The
teacher replied that God balances
out the good and bad.
A boy who is often in trouble
was quick to correct the teacher.
He said, No, it's because Adam
and Eve sinned and sin came into
the world."
The teacher continued to try to
answer the students' questions,
but with obviously no knowledge

of what the Bible says. Each time

the same boy was ready with the
correct answer. Why? Because he
was at Galilean Bible Camp this
summer and had apparently been
paying close attention in chapel!
Eventually the teacher grew
tired of being corrected and sent
the student out of the class.
We encouraged him to continue
speaking up with the truth, but
suggested he start raising his hand
first!

Celebrating

All Along the Way!

WE HAVE MUCH TO CELEBRATE! As the new Ontario Field

Director, I travelled throughout Ontario this summer celebrating

what the Lord is doing at One Hope Canada ministries. I met
summer staff, saw children being blessed at camp, and grew to love
our One Hope Canada missionaries.
1,800 km is a long drive to visit a
camp, but worth every kilometer!
It was there, at Sunny Cove Bible
Camp, that I met One Hope Canada
missionaries Mark and Tina Mast,
Rachel Mast and Sara Kellar. It was
there my heart broke for the hurts of
children, but was also overjoyed at
the hope in Jesus presented through
the lives of our missionaries and

summer staff.
Next I was off to Dorion Bible
Camp on the shores of Lake Superior.
From Dorion to Thunder Bay, people
celebrated the arrival of Martin and
Shannan Lord from South Africa as
our new camp directors. With one
camp property closing and a new
one open, we celebrate the history
of Dorion Bible Camp, and the

future as well!
The gates of Galilean Bible Camp,
a reminder of times gone by, stand
next to the new sign pointing us
to celebrate what the Lord has in
store for todays campers. God is
at work not only at Galilean Bible
camp where Bill Kay leads his team,
but in the public schools along the
North Shore where Bob & Karen
Knight share Bible stories and Kathy
Bronson leads childrens Bible
clubs. Not far from Blind River, we
made our way to Manitoulin Island
where we met missionaries Pete
and April Van Volkingburgh & their
team, who work with youth on the
Wiki Reservation.

YOUNG MOM'S MINISTRY

Celebrating

Partnership
Unhealthy teenage relationships, the strong desire to be
loved, assault, rapejust a few of the youth ministry challenges
in our community. Consequently, we continually have girls
coming through HOPEyouth who are pregnant, have a small
child, or have had an abortion.
In the last few years, I have built
relationships with countless girls
during their pregnancies. My desire
has been to live out Jesus love in
practical ways to these beautiful
girls. Most are from 14-18 but some
have been as young as 12. Often,
these girls do not have a support
system and are left figuring out
parenthood completely on their
own. By building relationships
with these girls, I have been able to
model godly parenting, using my
own family and experiences.
In the middle of the night we
receive many panic phone calls

10

from moms, asking what to do.

Things that seem second nature or
common sense to most of us, have
to be taught to these kids who are
having kids! They must learn to
feed a baby every few hours (not
just three times a day); learn about
the consistency of a schedule; learn
how to bathe a baby; learn that its
okay for babies to cry; learn that not
only alcohol hurts a baby . . . weed
does, too.
I was so excited when Ariane
Martinez joined our HOPEyouth
staff this summer! Until now I
have been connecting with these

moms one on one, but have not

been able to run anything formal
on my own. It has been a great joy
to brainstorm with Ariane so we
can reach this group of girls more
effectively this fall.
We plan to host a weekly
playgroup for the kids as well as a
support group for the moms, and
would like to teach the importance
of nutrition. We are going to start
a monthly Make and Take night
with these girls, where we spend
the night together and make four
freezer meals for each girl to take
home. Its our desire to meet the
practical needs of these moms,
so we have a base for sharing the
gospel with them.

How can you

get involved?
PRAY FOR US. We need hearts of
compassion and the love of Jesus
to reach out and embrace these
young girls. We need wisdom in
managing our time with ministry
and our families, so we will
continue to be godly examples.

Girls as young as 12 often do not have

a support system and are left figuring out

parenthood completely on their own.
Pray for the lives and hearts
of these young moms and their
children. Pray against abortion.
Pray for young, pregnant, teenage
girls with little or no support, who
are still navigating the waters of
high school. To them, abortion often
seems like the only option.
FINANCIAL HELP. We are looking
for more funding for the Young
Moms Ministry. Any donation will
be used to help meet the needs of
the girls and their kids.

We can use gift card donations

for Walmart, Carters, Freshco, or
Independent. These can be used for
the young moms and for our Make
and Take nights.
Practical gifts can also be a huge
help. We have a small storage area
for baby items, so please email us if
you are interested in helping in this
way. We dont always have room,
but do appreciate any offers!

FINDING MY Mot her

Continued from page 5

I hounded him for days.

Sometimes, I would walk
past his bedroom and see
him on his knees by his
bedside. I hoped he was
praying for the courage to
write that letter.

Finally, he agreed to write,

but he cautioned me, Faye, this
doesnt mean she will want to
have anything to do with us. I
understood that, but couldnt wait to
see if shed respond. Every day I ran
home from school and checked the
mailbox, and every dayno letter.
Weeks passed, but I didnt give up
hope. One afternoon I opened the
mailbox and my heart leapt. There
it was, a pink envelope. The longest
hour and a half of my life was spent
waiting for Dad to get home!
The pretty woman from Gimli
Bible Camp, Irene Adams, agreed
to meet Dad. She also agreed to be
his wife, an answer to my prayers.

12

I did get my new mother and I got

to choose her! I distinctly remember
one incident where my new mom
and I were disagreeing about
something and when I complained
to Dad, he put down the newspaper,
looked me right in the eye and said,
Faye, you picked her, you work it
out! What could I say?
My prayers were answered in
such a beautiful way, yet recently I
realized there was more to this story
than even I had thought.
Several years ago I was looking
through some of my second moms
keepsakes and came across a real
treasure, a certificate given to her
many years before. It simply read,
This is to certify that Irene Adams
has attended Summer Bible School
conducted at Thunder Creek School.
It was dated July 26, 1934, when she
was eleven.
On the certificate I recognized
another name, the signature of the
Bible School teacher, Miss Gretta

Summer/Fall 2015 | www.onehopecanada.ca

McIntyre. My second mom had told

me that the first time she heard the
Gospel was from Gretta, a twentynine-year-old CSSM missionary,
who spent her summers traveling
to different communities playing
her harpsichord, singing songs,
and telling children about Jesus. I
recognized Grettas name, because
twelve years after the certificate had
been issued, Gretta McIntyre married
my dad and, two years later, at age
forty-three, gave birth to me.
God, in His faithfulness, had
woven together the answer to my
prayer years before I was born! When
Dad wrote that first letter to Irene,
he didnt know his first wife, Gretta,
had introduced Irene to Jesus and,
although Irene had never met Dad
personally, she knew that Gretta
would have married a good man, so
she felt led to respond to his letter.
And, as Paul Harvey always said,
Now you know the rest of the story.

BY TERESA WARD
CAMP DIRECTOR

We wanted to see God move

in our hearts and in our campers lives.

New Hearts

During Staff Training week we discussed the many goals

we wanted to achieve over the summer. We wanted to see God
move in our hearts and in our campers lives. We talked about
the importance of focusing our energies and attention on the
campers, so they would get the best of us and feel the love of
God through our actions and words, and came up with the
tagline, Its for the children.

It became an inside joke and a

healthy reminder between us.
We had 275 children at camp this
summer in our VBS, Day Camps,
and Resident Camp programs. Some
were repeat campers, some came for
more than one week of camp, and
many were new. As we travelled
from one small community to
another, we focussed on the needs

of our campers. We wanted them to

have FUN, to feel loved, and to feel
Gods presence. Campers told how
they loved Monarch Bible Camp
because the staff were so caring and
fun. They also said they learned lots
about God.
As we progressed through each
week, we saw campers move
from singing songs about God to

worshipping Him. We saw them

take an active interest in chapel,
and in what staff shared in Why
I Believe and during team
devotionals. The staff had both
casual and intense conversations
about God and His love, about
how to stay true to Him, about the
importance of reading His Word
and about staying strong for the
Lord.
Growing with God means
serving God and serving God means
growing with Him. And thats
what we saw with our staff this
summer. Each and every one has
a servants heart. Time and time
again, staff would put in that extra
effort, offer to help with whatever
was needed, take the time to listen
to a camper or a fellow staff, push
themselves to give their best, love
their campers, encourage each
other and their campers. They
grew so much in their relationship
with God and in their dependence
on Him. As we studied Gods Word
together, staff felt they could ask
questions, admit they didnt get
it all, seek for answers and pray
together. I marvelled when I saw
staff reading Gods Word together
on free time, or hear about their
discussions at night while they
billeted together or how they texted
each other to question some of the
points they didnt quite get.
One staff person said that
after last year, they didnt think
it could get any better, but this
year was way better. That was our
summer at Monarch beyond our
expectation and so full of God and
His love!!

Celebrating Christ's

As the summer of 2015 draws

to a close, we have many, many
things to celebrate! God has been
faithful throughout five weeks of
Vacation Bible Schools, two weeks
of Bible Camp, and the eight-day
Wilderness Canoe Trip we direct.
There were many campers who
surrendered their lives to Jesus

Christ and we give Him all the

praise for the awesome gift of His
grace and love.
A definite highlight occurred
at teen camp. There were 45 in
attendance. A significant number
of them were First Nations youth,
and among them, a sweet, little 13
year old girl.

Two campers who heard the saving

message of the Gospel this year.

She wore a long-sleeve

sweatshirt the first few days of
camp. Eventually she took it off
and her exposed arms revealed
why she had been keeping them
covered. Her arms were riddled
with dozens of huge scars. As we
got to know her, we learned that
she was only 11 years old when
she began to be sexually abused.
To cope with the shame and hurt of
what she experienced, she began
"cutting". Some of the scars on her
arms were 2 inches long!
As the week progressed, she
trusted in Jesus as her Saviour
and experienced genuine peace
with God.
One evening, I was moved to
tears as we sang the song entitled
Never Once. The lines, "Scars and
struggles on the way, but with joy
our hearts can say, never once did

This sweet young lady can face the

future with the assurance that Jesus will

walk with her every step of the way!
we ever walk alone, never once
did You leave us on our own; You
are faithful, God, You are faithful."
Shivers began coursing up and
down my back!
I was moved to tears to think
that this precious little girl will
never walk alone because Jesus is
by her side. She will never need to
cut herself again in order to cope
with the pain of her circumstances.
I was overwhelmed with emotion
to think that she now has Jesus
bearing all her burdens... giving

her salvation... peace... and joy.

Isaiah 53:5 kept ringing in my ears,
"By Jesus' wounds, we are healed."
How awesome to celebrate
that Jesus died and rose again,
shedding His blood to save us to
the uttermost. This sweet young
lady can face the future with the
assurance that Jesus will walk
with her every step of the way!

This summer One Hope Canada

distribute to thousands of campers
at 23 camp locations, stretching
from Pender Island, BC, to Hampton,
NB. What a gift!
Over half the children and youth
who attend our camps come from
homes with no Christian inf luence.
These Manga books are an effective
way of telling them who Gods Son
is, and what Jesus did for them.
We are deeply grateful for the
ministry of the Bible League of
Canada, as we could not have
covered the cost.
Response from the frontlines
has been encouraging:
The Manga books are awesome!
We used them during cabin
devotions. It was exciting to see the
campers, and especially the boys
who have a hard time sitting still,
make the connection between the
story we read in their Manga book
and the same story in the Bible.
Thanks so much, Bible League of
Canada! (Mark Wilson, Program

From age 10 to the present, One Hope Canada has

significantly impacted my life. The first prayer I saw
answered was prayed by my school bus driver, a
One Hope Canada (formerly CSSM) pastor. The first
church I attended as a new believer in my teens
was a One Hope Canada church. After Bible college,
the first church I pastored was with the Mission.
My wife, Gloria, grew up in a One Hope Canada
church, attended Camp Silversides many summers,
and taught VBS with the Mission two summers.
Fourteen years ago, the Lord called us to rejoin
the Mission as Alberta Field Director.
Tell us about the Missions history of sending
community missionaries and how that led to many
churches being planted across the country.

Over 140 churches grew out of the faithful ministry

of community missionaries who had a passion to take
the Gospel into Canadas remotest corners. Some rode
horses, others bicycled, and some had vehicles. They
taught the Bible in schools and promised children a
free week at camp for memorizing 500 Bible verses.
Many met the challenge, camps were started, and
out of these ministries grew Sunday schools, which
frequently developed into churches.
What has happened to those churches?

Many churches joined denominations, went

independent, or closed their doors when community
demographics changed.

The National Board wanted

to determine rural church
ministry needs and discern
what and how to effectively
and sustainably meet them.

There have been some encouraging developments

in One Hope Canada regarding our church and
community ministries. Bring us up to speed.

God used Canada Revenue Agency to trigger an initial

review. The National Board wanted to determine rural
church ministry needs and discern what and how to

AGC would appreciate our assistance in helping small

town pastors raise support, so they wouldnt need a
second job. The more we researched, the more evident
it became that we could help each other be more
effective at building Gods kingdom.
What does the partnership mean for One Hope
Canadas existing church ministries?

Then we discovered that

CRA does not allow us to have
bi-vocational missionaries.
That creates a significant
problem for many pastors,
who need to supplement
their income.

effectively and sustainably meet them.

We even asked: are we doing something another
group is doing? Is church ministry needed?
Then we discovered that CRA does not allow us to have
bi-vocational missionaries, because we are what they
call a religious order. That creates a significant problem
for many pastors who need to supplement their income
or work in their communities to develop relationships
for sharing the Gospel.
At the heart of the new vision is a partnership
with the Associated Gospel Churches.Explain the
partnership and why it is so important.

Over the past year, much research was done to

determine if there was another non-denominational,
Gospel-centered ministry seeking to plant and sustain
churches in small towns or rural settings.
AGC is thoroughly evangelical, has more than 150
churches, congregations, and ministries across
Canada, is non-denominational, and has no missions
programs or camps. Because CRA does not see them
as a religious order, their pastors are free to be bivocational. AGC works in out-of-the-way communities
and has developed resources to assist churches and
small town pastors to be effective. We learned that

Over the next year or two, One Hope Canada churches

can determine which umbrella they best fit under.
Our more established churches will slide under the
AGC banner if they can fully support their pastor.
When a pastor needs or chooses to be bi-vocational,
he can be accredited with AGC. This will see our
churches and missionaries evaluating what works
best in their community. We, of course, will continue
to fellowship together at annual conferences and will
add AGC pastors to our conference registrations when
they need to come under our banner to raise support.
What is your hope and prayer for the future?

Once we work through the next year or two of

transition, I sincerely long to see the Gospel going
into rural/small town settings all across Canada
through community missionaries. I sincerely long to
see churches birthed. We have the tools through the
AGC and the means through One Hope Canada. Christ
stated He would build His Church and it shouldnt
matter how He chooses to do it, as long as souls are
saved, lives are changed, and Christ is glorified.

it became evident that

we could help each other
be more effective at
building Gods kingdom.

Future Giants

Our summer has been very busy, but rewarding. It's

always exciting at the camps when young people are seeing
God at work. It has been that way from Northern Ontario to
Rochester, New York.
I believe that the greatest mission
field we're facing in North America
is our own young people, especially
because of the humanistic values
being taught in our schools.
Billy Graham once said, "You

give me one man totally sold out

for God and I'll show you a person
that would turn this world upside
down." And we have the privilege
of working with the future giants!
Just think of all the great men and

women through history who came

to know the Lord in their youth.
This summer, we had the
privilege to be there as God
touched the lives of many young
people as they invited Jesus into
their lives. At one camp, a boy ran
up to me with tears in his eyes,
excited that he was going to talk to
his counselor that evening to help
him to accept Christ into his heart.
Let me finish with this. A young
man, about fifteen, working on
maintenance at camp, was able to
sit in on one of the chapels and he
made the point of not missing any
after that. He had never heard the
Gospel before. When I was leaving
camp, I stopped him and gave him
the Gospel of John and asked him
to read it, and told him I would be
praying for him daily. His question
to me was, "Why would you pray
for me?" He just might be the next,
great giant!

look at the next 12 weeks of club

long time and there are days when
we just feel were not able, our
bodies are tired and we only had a

worth it? But God has promised
that He is able, He will give us rest

The message of salvation is shared

songs that speak of Gods love for

EVERY SUMMER, ONE HOPE CANADAS 46 MINISTRY POINTS

WELCOME MORE THAN 3,600 VOLUNTEERS. With camp ministry
being so people intensive, appealing for volunteers is vital.
That is where One Hope Canadas radio ministry comes in.
Since 2001, One Hope Canada has
partnered with Heart of the South,
enabling us to secure paid advertising
for all camp ministries. Its a great
way to spread the Word.
Heart of the South is a two-hour
weekly Southern Gospel radio
program airing on 36 stations from
British Columbia to Ontarioand

around the world on the Internet.

Long-time host Harold Giesbrecht
explains how it works.
In 1999, I joined CSSM after
working for Golden West Radio. My
program director said theyd like to
use me now and then as a production
voice for commercials. Because CSSM
was a religious order, my receiving

outside income was not an option

with CRA, so we arranged for Golden
West to give CSSM commercials in
exchange for my recording time.
From small beginnings fifteen years
ago, the concept grew beyond Golden
West to Heart of the South, airing on
three dozen stations in five provinces.
In exchange, One Hope Canada
receives 4,000 commercials and
thousands of Minute of Hope audio
stories annually, a retail value in the
hundreds of thousands of dollars.
If interested in having Heart
of the South on your local radio
station (it could help a One Hope
Canada camp), please contact

Summer
Road Trip
Although we didnt actually travel anywhere, Road Trip
was our theme for this past summer. Our tagline, Wherever
You Go, came from our theme verse, Joshua 1:9: Have I
not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be
frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is
with you wherever you go.
God reminded Joshua that He
was with him, everywhere. We
shared that promise with the
campers, so they could remember it
as they went home.
In staff training, we stressed
journeying, not only each other, but
also with the campers . . . finding

out where they were on their

journey towards Christ or already
with Christ and helping them take
another step on their journey. Some
campers didnt decide to follow
Christ, but they did have some
questions answered or received a
Bible and were encouraged to keep

seeking the Lord. However, there

were many first time decisions and
we rejoiced along with the angels.
We saw thirty campers make a first
time decision for Christ this year.
Here are quotes regarding
campers who made decisions or
received Bibles from their cabin
leaders:
One of my campers who got a
Bible this week also prayed and
accepted Jesus! She was super
excited about reading her Bible!
Three girls from the same cabin
received Bibles! Two prayed for
Jesus to come into their lives this
week, and one is excited to go home
and ask her parents to take her to
church again!

Summer/Fall 2015 | www.onehopecanada.ca

SHIRLEY: We attended Toronto Bible College [now

Tyndale University], where we met and later sensed
Gods call to full-time work with Canadian Sunday
School Mission.
What was your first assignment with the mission?

ROSIE: We were sent to Amaranth, a wide spot on the

road in southern Manitoba, in October 1953. Our first
ministry was to teach religious education in schools.
That grew to twenty-five schools, three Sunday
schools, and Bible clubs. It was a joy to work there,
even though our early mode of transportation was by
foot or bicycle. During the prairie winters, traveling
from school to school could be very cold. God later
supplied us with Willy, our little Willys car.
We also had the joy of helping to start Ochre River
Bible Camp, which later moved to near Dauphin and
is now Dauphin Bible Camp, one of the chain of camps
with One Hope Canada.
After a few years in Amaranth, Shirleys mom had
a stroke, and Shirley went home to Sault Ste Marie to
help. She took a teaching job in an elementary school
so she could care for her mom. I stayed in Amaranth
for a couple of years but, by then, it was felt the work

and stronger, and the Lord seemed to be leading us into childrens
crusades with the mission reaching into other provinces.

was developing into a church planting ministry.

Don and Donna Lee moved to Amaranth and, in
God's wonderful way, helped start and build a church.
I moved to the Sault where I served with CSSM as
an assistant to Mary Neal, teaching Bible in public
schools and working at Galilean Bible Camp.
What was your next ministry?

SHIRLEY: Our interest in working with childrens

ministry grew stronger and stronger, and the Lord
seemed to be leading us into childrens crusades
with the Mission. After consultation with CSSMs
national office, it was decided we should begin a
ministry with Childrens Crusades out of Winnipeg,
but reaching into other provinces. In 1966, we visited
the Maritimes to observe a similar CSSM work under
the Whites. That was an eventful trip with our
little travel trailer, but such a valuable one. When
we returned to Manitoba, we were asked to go to
Amaranth for a childrens crusade.
One encouragement was the provision of a unique,
self-supporting chalkboard, with its overhead lighting
and black light for Rosies backgrounds to support my
Bible lesson. A man from my church in Sault Ste Marie
created this teaching unit for us. Besides travelling
to summer camps, our time was filled with Bible
presentations to AWANA clubs, Sunday schools, church
childrens clubs, and retirement homes.
ROSIE: One of the greatest challenges in ministry
was the stress of unloading our packed car, filled
with equipment and visuals, to set up for a meeting.
An even greater stress came after the meeting as we
attempted to fit everything back into the car.

the black light revealed the hidden climax to the

Bible presentation Rosie so cleverly created. At the
camp, we were always thrilled when your letter of
acceptance to our invitation arrived. We wanted you
to join us more often, but realized others wanted a
share of your God-centred ministry. Your valuable
chapel ministry was a huge encouragement to me as
a beginner in camp administration. Even yet, as I talk
with former campers, some still say it was through
your ministry that they began a personal relationship
with the Lord.
What about retirement?

SHIRLEY: Shortly after we retired in 1992, we had the

privilege of going to Venezuela for a short visit. Frieda
Johnson, who served there with TEAM, invited us to
teach missionary children during their missionary
conference. It was a joy when some of them grew in
the Lord.
Now, after over twenty years, we praise the Lord for
His protective care. People gave so much of themselves
so we could serve this way. We are thankful for the
many children who responded to the call of the Gospel
during those exciting and full years.
These two dedicated ladies still reach out to the
needs of people, praying that the Lord will enable
others to present the Gospel to the spiritually needy
across Canada. There will be many in heaven who
found the way and the truth and the life through
Rosie and Shirleys ministry.

When you drove into Galilean Bible Camp for

July chapel sessions every third year for a couple
of decades, your station wagon just bulged with
interesting teaching aids. Your puppets took on real
life for campers as they saw ventriloquism done so
effectively. The remarkable hush from the children as
Shirley presented the Gospel through Bible stories
was a gift from God. There was often an audible,
but gentle, expression of awe from campers as

Behold, I will do a new thing.

New Things

Do not remember the former things, nor consider the

things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall
spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road
in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The beast of the field
will honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give
waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink
to My people, My chosen (Isaiah 43: 18-20).
We live in an exciting time! What
a privilege we have to work with
youth and children. As we relocated
from South Africa to Canada, we
pondered the differences we would
encounter in youth and children.

28

Summer/Fall 2015 | www.onehopecanada.ca

Not only did we enter a different

continent, time zone, and mission
organisation, but simple things
like grocery shopping became
milestones to achieve. As we
entered our new home in Dorion,

Ontario, we realised just how many

challenges lay before us to prepare
Dorion Bible Camp for the summer.
Just as our lives were changing, so
was the camps. The main summer
camp property was put up for sale
and we steadily started moving
resources, equipment, furnishings,
and years of history across to the
newer summer camp property.
The task was great and completely
impossible for the two of us. God
brought volunteers to complete our
growing task list and, before long,
we realised we had achieved so
much more than we could have
dreamed at the start of spring.
Our summer story is one of Gods
faithful provision: new friendships,
volunteers, donations, gifts and
miracles, and a great camping
season with young children and
youth from our region and beyond.

As they opened their hearts to the

Holy Spirit we began to share about a

life-changing relationship with Jesus.
Before we knew it, our campers
arrived and six weeks of back to
back camping was underway. We
discovered that youth and children
are not so different. They have
similar insecurities, fears, and
challenges. As they opened their
hearts to the Holy Spirit and we
listened to their stories, we began
to share about a life-changing
relationship with Jesus. God started
a new thing at Dorion, so we enter
the year ahead with much hope.

Being a part of One Hope Canada is

a blessing as we see God springing
forth rivers in the desert and
roadways in the wilderness. We
pray for His continued vision and
direction as we seek to continue
conversations of HOPE in our
surrounding community and across
Canada.

COOKING WITH KATHY

BY KATHY WEIR

JUST AS IT TAKES THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS FOR A TASTY MEAL , SO TOO DO

WE NEED GOD AND ONE ANOTHER TO GET THE CORRECT SPIRITUAL RESULTS.

Cooking with Fire

CONFESSION HONESTY WAITING. IM LEARNING THAT BEING
DIRECTIONALLY CHALLENGED AND COOKING IMPAIRED ARE NOT
THE ONLY THINGS I STRUGGLE WITH.
I am grateful that God led us to the
theme, Powered by Prayer, at Turtle
Mountain Bible Camp (in Manitoba)
this summer. Little did I realize the
importance of endeavouring to
implement more prayer into my life
and the lives of staff and campers.
It is easy to apply when miracles
happen (we evidenced many) and
when God works and answers in
ways beyond anything we can ask
or imagine.
We rejoice in His faithful
provision through donations to the
camp, volunteers who come with
servant hearts, and the blessing
of a God-focused and praying
staff team. It is easy to forget we
are in a spiritual battle and need
Gods armour. Ive discovered, like
Elijah who experienced incredible
victory, how quickly one can

30

Summer/Fall 2015 | www.onehopecanada.ca

begin listening to Satan's subtle

lies, drowning out Gods still
small voice of truth. This results
in our focusing on circumstances
and becoming frustrated,
overwhelmed, and defeated.
How does this relate to cooking?
Just as it takes the right ingredients
for a tasty meal, so too do we need
God and one another to get the
correct spiritual results. I am a
do-it-myself person. Instead, God
calls us to community. For example,
this summer God used His people to
bless our camp through donations
of meat. Working alone, I could
have made four hundred pounds
of ground beef into 7,000 meatballs
in May. Yes, what could have been
long and tiring days took only two
hours while visiting and laughing
with volunteers. As we learned in

the culinary class at Skills camp,

there is much to learn from one
another as we taste and see that the
Lord is good and share the results
with others.
It is important to follow
instructions when cooking, so too
is a successful life recipe all about
choices! Will we listen to Gods Holy
Spirit, His Word and truth, or the
deceitful lies of the enemy? Will we
accept the prayers, hugs, and support
of His people, or will we wallow in
self-pity and struggle, trying to do
things on our own?
