The issues of animal welfare. (2009). Sustainable Table. Retrieved November 17, 2012, from
http://www.sustainabletable.org/issues/animalwelfare/
This article presents the way that farm animals are treated in order for the industry to
make the most money with the least amount of effort. The article explains that because of the
way that the industry treats these animals their lives are full of suffering and are substantially
shorter. The writer lists the methods used on these animals such as debeaking chickens and
cutting the tails off of cows for easier access to their product. The article is very informative and
does a good job of letting the reader know the facts without having to rely on emotional writing.
The articles main point is to show how animals are treated by the industry as a product
rather than a living being so that they can make the most profit. I plan on using the information
and statistics of the farmhouse numbers in the Economic Issues section of our research paper.
The most important part that I want to highlight is the way that the welfare of the animals is
forsaken in order for them to make money.

agriculture. Retrieved from

This article covers the social issues that go with the farming industry. It is presented by
the United States Department of Agriculture and the summary of the article explains that people
on both sides of the issue are eager to point the blame on the opposite party and it creates
problems and not enough solutions. There is a large section that goes over what organizations
that are pro and against animal welfare have been doing and whether or not they are using too
much emotional writing instead of focusing on the facts.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
I will be using this article in the Social Issues section of our research paper because it
uses many different peoples perspectives in the document and presents the information in an
unbiased way. Especially important is the focus on the social issues of trade and how they
propose to keep the welfare of the animals top priority. The articles aim was also to bring both
sides together instead of fighting over what should or shouldnt be done, so it is perfect for the
social aspect of our paper.

Retrieved from http://www.nationalaglawcenter.org/assets/crs/RS21978.pdf
This research report comes from an analyst in the Natural Resources and Rural
Development in the Department of Agriculture. It is a summary of recent laws that have been
proposed and passed in Congress in relation to the practices of the farm industry. An important
part to note from this research is that there have been no proposals sent to the latest sitting of
Congress. The writer also mentions that there is a focus for the industry to take it upon
themselves to fix their practices rather than forced legislation.
I will be using this report in our Political Issues section because it summarizes some of
the important laws but also points out that there have not been many laws passed in some time.
The report points out that there is a need for the industry to fix itself but Animal Welfare groups
have been making progress in getting initiatives started in their states.

as far back as sources were available. One of his main points was to draw a link between social
awareness and the ease for people to make their ideas known through various media sources. He
credits the Veganism movement as helping organizations form to lobby for the ethical treatment
of animals.
I want to use his address in the History section of our animal rights research paper. While
our papers main focus is the last 10 years it is important to lay a framework of how animals are
treated and the groups that are having the biggest impact in modern times. We need to briefly
discuss how these groups and ideas were shaped and what the availability of media has enabled
everyone to accomplish.
Wise, S. (n.d). The modern animal rights movement. Encyclopdia Britannica. Retrieved from
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/25760/animal-rights/257091/The-modernanimal-rights-movement
This article comes from the Britannica and discusses the history of the animal rights
movement across all boards: farming, domestic and animal research. The article points out that
philosophy had a large amount of sway when it came to animal rights. The philosophists were
the ones to worry about the ethical and moral obligations that man has to the animals. When their
movement got bigger they were joined by many different people ranging from writers to
scientists and lawyers.
This article will also be used in our history section. The first previous article will lay the
framework for what groups are currently working on animal rights but this article will be helpful
in framing the philosophy behind the beginning of the animal rights movement. I also want to

bring in the legal aspect, history and how ethics helped shape what the modern animal rights
movement has become.
