HAMM ROLLER SUMMARY

Nebraska DOT
Hamm Oscillation Review
February 2012

Benefits of Oscillation

Introduced by HAMM in 1983

28 years of continuous development

Benefits of Oscillation
Europe Had a Serious Need for Non-Aggressive Compaction

Benefits of Oscillation
By 2001 ~ 80% of Hamm tandem roller sales in Europe were oscillatory rollers

Benefits of Oscillation
So why bring it to the U.S.?
European style mixes are prevalent
The industry has changed and grain crushing,
achieving bonus and avoiding penalties are a
huge issue
Joint construction is poor and usually the first
area to fail
TAC (time available for compaction) is critical
temperature sensitive
Contractors want solutions!

Benefits of Oscillation
Introduced into the U.S. (South Carolina) in 2002

Tested as a breakdown roller No

significant benefit was realized

Benefits of Oscillation

Vibration

Oszillation

No damage Cold Joints

CO DOT introduced a cold joint density requirement of

88% on state work
18 months after implementation, not a single contractor
had been able to achieve the joint density spec and were
factoring in penalty costs to the job
Brannon S&G using the Hamm HD O90V was able to
consistently achieve joint density between 89% - 91%
CO DOT continues to enforce the specification and
promote the ozzi as the contractors solution

Vibration

Better Consistency
across full width of mat

Why is this so?

With constant Vibration the material
will eventually give.
With constant Oscillation the drum
will eventually give.
If the mat can be squeezed the
Oscillation drum will continue to work.
If the mat is fully compacted the
Oscillation drum will scuff but not
cause damage to the mat.
The end result is consistent density
numbers across the width of the mat.

Changes to PA Turnpike Manual

Specifications revised in Section 401 and 409

Use vibratory rollers only when permitted by the
representative and only to compact authorized lifts of
bituminous concrete base course material or authorized
lifts of binder course material 3 inches or greater in
depth.

Oscillatory rollers that do not impact will be
permitted as intermediate or finish rollers for all
courses

Oscillation
Oscillation Effects in the Mat

When horizontal compaction is complete, vertical compaction continues

The Common Solution

Make it or Break it The Ozzi Zone

Paver screed
75 to 82%

Oscillation summary

You cannot over compact better quality

No chatter marks better quality
No vibration to environment and machine better quality
No damage to cold joints - better quality
Ability to work effectively on cooler mixes - better quality

LARGE HD SERIES

HD+
Hydraulic offset to either side
Improved from 3.9 to 6.7 either side.
Big enough to pinch a joint.

A reminder - if you dont

use Oscillation!
