U R BAN DESIGN
Iglu provide an urban design service for clients seeking to promote
land through the planning system, from large scale strategic
masterplans to detailed housing layouts. Below is a selection of
projects demonstrating our breadth of experience.

Woonbook, South Korea

A multi-billion pound development by Lippo
Developments, just south of Seoul, capital city of South
Korea on a site enclosed by hills to the south and sea
frontage to the north. Paul from Iglu led the preparation of
a design brief and the subsequent design development of
the site.
The design brief sought to realise a development form
unique to South Korea, based on the principles of urban
design, sustainability and a landscape of local and national
culture. The masterplan proposals were structured on
framework elements including sustainable drainage,
landscape open space, waterfront, streets and existing
natural features of the site. The design development
focused on issues including urban scale and hierarchy,
landscape and movement strategies, building-to-open
space relationships, environmental opportunities and
sustainability.

Rosewell, Midlothian
Iglu produced a Development Framework for a site
on the south eastern edge of Rosewell in Midlothian,
helping to coordinate input relating to planning,
transport, drainage, ecology and ground condition.
The framework looked beyond the boundaries of the
site and set out a vision for the generational growth
of Rosewell.

South East Wedge Master Plan, Edinburgh

Paul was commissioned as urban design
consultant for one of the largest urban
regeneration projects in Scotland covering over
1000 hectares and comprising of the creation of a
new settlement and expansions to existing urban
areas.
The development included 4,800 homes,
community facilities and over 200,000m2
of business space including the Bio-medical
Research Park. As design consultant for the
masterplanning team for the project Paul was
responsible for the preparation of the Master Plan
and layout of urban and landscape elements.

Newcraighall, Edinburgh
Iglu are currently engaged on a new 200
acre multi-use masterplan at the south
east edge of Edinburgh, incorporating
residential, commercial, and educational
developments. The proposed masterplan
sets out a development framework
focused on landscape and SUDs, within
which existing and new development and
infrastructure is to be integrated through
new and existing connections. Iglu
recently produced a design and access
statement and detailed block layout for a
detailed application relating to the south
eastern corner site within the strategic
masterplan area.

Newtongrange, Midlothian
Iglu produced a strategic town growth plan and conceptual
masterplan to highlight the merits of a site located on the
northern edge of Newtongrange. The plans helped to highlight
the sites sustainable location, well connected to key services
and public transport in the town, and how, with neighbouring
recreational facilities and areas of woodland the sites
development could help establish a new Sport, Amenity and
Woodland Corridor along the towns northern boundary.

North Lanarkshire Reps

Iglu were commissioned to provide representations to North
Lanarkshire Council for a number of sites near the town of
Kilsyth. The rep documents addressed key issues including
landscape, flooding and access to promote the allocation of the
sites for residential development. Concept masterplans were
produced to clearly demonstrate how identified constraints /
opportunities could be mitigated / utilised to create a sensitive
and connected development.

Clachan of Campsie, West

Dunbartonshire
Iglu prepared a series of housing
layouts to assist negotiations with the
planning department for planning
permission of a small-scale residential
proposal for a sensitive site in the
conservation village of Clachan of
Campsie in East Dunbartonshire. The
final layout was accompanied by a series
of graphics that communicated the
impact of the proposal, particularly in
terms of landscape and urban design
principles. The proposals were recently
granted planning permission by West
Dunbartonshire Council.

Strathmiglo, Fife
Iglu produced a constraints and opportunities plan and
indicative block masterplan to promote development of a
site on the northern edge of Strathmiglo. The work sought
to promote how the site could form a natural and connected
extension to the village, linking to the many existing wynds
leading off the villages main street.

Bunkershill, North Berwick

Iglu produced a development feasibility study, which looked at
a series of density and layout options for a small site at the back
of a listed estate building called Bunkershill in North Berwick.
The study helped inform and progress discussions with the
local authority addressing issues such as landscaping, access,
building form, SUDs and visual impact from the A198, the
main gateway into North Berwick from the west. Our services
included the production of a plan plotting the trees running
along the western edge of the estate, ascertaining whether
a new access route could be introduced, and the creation
of a visualisation, illustrating the potential visual impact
development would have from along the A198.
